One-Minute of Fame

What are you famous for doing? After your one minute of fame speech, reflect on it below. Write one well-written and thought-out paragraph. Use complete sentences and correct grammar. Upper classmen should be writing paragraphs with compound and complex sentences that are a minimum of six sentences long. Things to consider (you do not need to include all of them)

  1. eye contact
  2. nervousness
  3. audience feedback
  4. preparation
  5. speaking rate (too fast? too slow? too many pauses?)
  6. gestures (Did you do any?)
  7. poise and presence
  8. introduction and conclusion
  9. organization
  10. facial expressions
  11. The actual trick, talent, or gift you shared--would you do that again or pick something else?

What went well? What do you need to work on for the next speech? Be as specific as possible!

In addition, leave feedback for at least two students. Feedback should be specific and original

  2. I felt that I overcame my nerves quite well. I just tried to keep chugging along, and play to the best of my ability. Practicing more is probably one of the things that would help me not be so nervous. i felt that i got every ones attention with the use of candy. Sorry that you guys did not get some of the songs on my set list. Picking songs that other people might know only hearing the guitar part is a challenge. Over all, I feel the speech went quite well.

    1. Sean I liked how you did your speech instead of just telling on how you can play, you demonstrated it as well and it was cool. you did good obviously you didn't need gestures because you were playing and eye contact was not needed as much so overall for this type of speech you did good

    2. Sean, I liked how you picked an idea that you are still in the process of learning. I liked how you gave some background on how you got into guitar and encouraged the audience too as well. To be honest I didn't know hardly any of those songs but then again we all have different tastes in music so you can't please everyone! The candy was a funny way to connect with the audience and get people excited and on the edge of their seat, even if they didn't realize it. Keep up the good work!

    3. Sean Murray!!!! You killed it out there bro even though you told me your were nervous i could not tell it is really hard to speak in front of a crowd but to perform in front of someone is a whole different ball game you did great.

    4. Sean! I think you did a really good job with this speech! I wouldn't be able to sit in front of the class and play an instrument like that! you were awesome! Throwing out the candy definitely made it a fun, and interactive speech. That was a good idea! I felt like you had the whole audience listening, and that is what you want! All I can say is you did a great job, not even just playing, but all around! Your eye contact, your tone and your confidence were through the roof. Nice job Sean!

  3. DON: I really liked your speech. I learned I shouldn't make any bets against you, that you have a pool, and that you are good at zombies. The way you added the comical story about you and your friends bet was really funny. Maybe next time talk about how thee bet arose and provide a bit more detail. I liked how you related to the class and that you seamed very comfortable up there.

    1. Drew I really liked your speech! I liked how you told us about a character that you created. It was so fun to hear you use one of your own personal made up words as a closer, and I think you should create more!

    2. Drew, I like how your speech was on something that was really unique to you. You were very honest and confident even though it was probably something completely new to most people. Your hand gestures were great and you had a very intriguing intro. Good job!

  5. Don's speech was awesome he didn't seem nervous at all he connected with the audience via Call of Duty and connected a story in to it which was funny how bad his friend was. eye contact was good and he used his disc as his gestures to show them that it's black ops overall he did a good job on this speech

  6. I felt that this speech wasn't as good as my last one. I wasn't really sure how to get across what I was trying to say, and in the end it sounded more like a motivational speech then a 1 minute of fame speech. I'll definitely need to put more effort into my next speech so that it doesn't stray from topic.

    1. MELONIE: I really enjoyed your speech! I liked how you should us something that you had never showed anyone else before. It was so fun to listen to you do your voice, and I thought it was really cool!

    2. I think Sara did an amazing job on her speech! She looked like she practiced and she did not look nervous at all. I liked how she shared her personal story with us, that really made me feel connected to what she was saying. She seemed also very confident and in the end that really shows through. I am very proud of her and can see her becoming a great speaker!

  7. I felt like this speech went quite well because it allowed us to really pick a topic we were experts on. This made it a lot easier to sound natural and in control of both your topic and audience. I think I did a better job of not focusing too much on the screen like I did last time, even though I was just answering questions during the video. I also think I did a good job of projecting my voice and keeping a steady rate without too many pauses or stutters. I feel like my eye contact is getting better with every speech as I learn to calm down and look at the entire audience. I brought up three objects with me but I honestly just forget to talk about them, which could have added to my speech. I think my gestures are pretty natural and just come with whatever I'm talking about. To prepare for this speech I wrote out a short intro and conclusion and then some main points/topics in between that I wanted to touch on. This worked very well for organizing my ideas. If I had to do this speech again I would still choose wrestling, but I might just make a few small improvements.

    1. I really enjoy listening to Nick's speeches. As I previously said, when he gives speeches his voice almost instantaneously gets louder and draws everyone in. It's a great way to sound confident and grab everyone's attention.

    2. I think Nick's speech was good. He appealed to the audience with the topic of sports and held my attention and I assume everyone else's as well. It seems that everyone noticed how loudly Nick talks, but it shows that he is passionate about whatever he may be talking about. This was a solid speech

    3. I think Nick did a really good job on this speech. He spoke clearly and at a good pace, but maybe a little loudly. He brought in a visual aid, his video, which drew the audiences attention more, instead of just talking about his topic.

      Delete
    4. I really liked your speech Nick. You had good volume (as usual) and you seemed like you had practiced your speech. I also liked to fact that you provided a video and your trophies for us to see.

  8. I think I did a good job on my speech. I actually practiced more than 6 times just to make sure I had it down. I tried hard to steady my rate of my speech, and I think I improved since the last few speeches I gave. Due to slowing my rate, I feel as though that helped me just take a deep breath and not feel as nervous as I have in the past. However, when watching my video I noticed that since I didn't have any notecards in my hands, I over used hand gestures. I'll try to not use my hands so much next time I give a speech.

Connor did another good job on his speech. I can tell that he's feeling more open now when talking in front of us, he didn't sound monotone at all. The only think I think he could use work on is better eye contact, it sometimes seems like he's staring past the audience

    1. Lauren, I always look forward to your speeches. I love the manner and poise in which you give them. I learn a lot from you every time you go. For this speech I learned a lot about you passion for swim. good job!

    2. Your speech was very good. Mentioning the relationships that swim helped you developed connected with the audience. Additionally, showing the video demonstrated exactly what you were talking about.

  9. I thought was speech was decent. I was able to talk with confidence during my speech. Even though my speech was not very serious, I had most of the classes' attention with them laughing during the speech. I did practice enough so that helped alot as well. I could have had a better conclusion and transitions could have been smoother.

I thought Drew did a great job on his speech. He was able to get the classes's attention and just be himself quite well when giving the speech. His tone was very good, and his conclusion was quite strong as well.

Michael's speech was very nice. Michael showing all the medals he has won during track, really show just how great of an athlete he has become. However Michael could have made his speech somewhat longer and finished with a more solid conclusion.

    1. Dakota had a decent speech. It was funny and made me laugh. He did a good job engaging the crowd. One of the few mistakes I noticed was that it seemed as if he was not sure what to say next. Other than this, Dakota's speech was good.

    2. Although the speech seemed to be a little underpracticed, it went well. I, as well as everybody else, laughed at various points in the speech because it was very entertaining. The speech also was very interesting since we all have witnessed his ability to down pudding. Dakota talked about a subject that was very important to him and that made the speech even better.

    3. Dakota I learned a thing or two about you bro like i didn't know you were hungry after you finished that speech i should have asked you to get me a pop tart too because i was also hungry but you did a great job and keep eating man.

    4. I thought your speech went very well. Referencing the pudding eating connected with the audience. Also, leaving the room directly after to get food was a nice conclusion.

    5. Dakota by far had the best speech. His topic was very funny and the way that he presented it was even better.

    6. Dakota you are the Sauce Boss!!! You had a good speech. Good job picking a unusual topic but you made it work. Like usual you are as cool as a cucumber and you make us listen and laugh. This is way people love listening to your speeches. Laughter is the best kind of medicine.

  10. I felt that even though this was the only memorized speech, I did really well. It felt very natural and I did not stumble over my words any more than I would if I had an outline or manuscript. My eye contact was not the best, which may have been due to the juggling. I noticed that I still sniffed, so I need to work on that. I was confident and comfortable up there and I think this was one of my better speeches.

    1. I really enjoyed Connor's speech. He looked very natural in both the juggling and the speaking portions. He spoke very clearly and showed no nervousness. Eye contact was lacking because of the juggling as already stated by Connor, but that's no excuse, just kidding. Great job!

  11. I thought my speech went okay. I got more and more nervous the further I went but I am not quite sure why. I really struggled to remember what to say even though I practiced a lot and spent a lot of time memorizing it. As a positive I think I had pretty good eye contact and I think I spoke at a pretty good rate. As another positive I think I had a more solid conclusion to this speech than I have had in my previous ones. Overall I think that this speech went better for me than the last one. Even though the last two speeches had very little written out in notes, knowing the subject ahead of time was something that helped a lot for this speech.

I really thought i showed great eye contact in my speech i had great volume and i had more confidence but i need to wok on my nervous phase when i get up to talk to a group people but overall i think this is my best speech yet i practice 3 to 1000 times but i got through it.

    1. I think Don did a great job on this speech. I really liked how he opened up to the class. I also really liked that he was true about what he knew he was best at, he did something different. I really like how prepared he was. He did not look nervous at all. Overall I believe that Don did an amazing job. Well done Don!

  13. I felt really nervous and weird doing this speech. I did not think my topic was very good. I felt very self centered doing this speech. I did not think I picked the right topic for this. I thought this speech was my worst one so far. I felt like I also could have practiced more and prepared more for this speech. Overall I thought I did not so great, I wish I could have done better.

  14. My one minute of fame speech so far has been my best speech. It was something at first I was really embarrassed in doing so, but once I got up there I was ready to go. Before I even went up to do my speech I had a really bad panic attack. Because it was my first time doing my voice impression outside of my house in front of you guys, So that was really nerve-wrecking. So while I was talking in my impression I received the expected faces of people being creeped out, to people opening their eyes in disbelief. That did make me feel a little uncomfortable. But, I had to realize that not everyone would feel this way and finish the rest of my speech as well as I possibly can.

Jannik's speech was really cool! I enjoyed him playing the guitar and signing for us. He didn't even looked nervous playing and even though I didn't know any of the songs he played, they were fun to listen to.

I thought that Jacob's speech was pretty neat. About him liking to play basketball and when he was younger wanting to work hard to play in the NBA. I also like the props he brought like his plaque. I like that fact that he really loves the sport and that with the love of the sport drives his ambitions later on in his life.

    1. Melonie, I have to admit, I was not expecting that! But, you really showed your true personality, and you were being yourself, so you have nothing to be ashamed of, and I respect you for doing that. You don't find many people who are "themselves" around others, but you are definitely not one of them. I also get panic attacks alot, and they are not a fun thing to deal with. I give you alot of props for pulling it through Melonie! Good work! (:

  15. I thought my 1-minute of fame speech went really well! I liked the fact it only had to be 1 minute, and we got to talk about what we were good at! I thought everything went really smooth during this speech, I wasn't nervous at all! I think the more speeches I do, the nervousness goes away a little bit. I didn't know if we could use an outline for this speech, so I wrote a short little outline the night before and kind of looked it over, just to know what I would be talking about. I really liked this speech because it let me show everyone something I like to do, that not many people knew I liked doing. Starting off strong and ending strong also helped me I feel like. Oh, and I didn't even know I was being recorded!

  16. I thought my speech was pretty good. I should have made it longer but I couldn't come up with anymore material. I really enjoyed Connor's speech I thought it was well put together. I liked how he brought in props and was able to teach everyone a little something about juggling.

  17. Overall, my speech was pretty okay. I probably could have practiced more. I'm not sure how much that would have helped since we couldn't use notes. I did write out beforehand the basic outline. I think that this really helped. I felt like I could have said more, but a minute isn't that long. I did get a Beatles quote in.

  18. Overall my speech went pretty OK. I was not nervous at all, i am becoming immune to stage fright. I am not sure if that is a good or bad thing...My speech was pretty short and i did not have that solid of a conclusion. I thought that bringing in my medals helped show that i really do let my light shine in track!

  19. I honestly hated my speech. Tennis was not my first choose to do my speech on but I did it because I felt I could talk freely about it, but I ended up just rambling one about meaningless tennis things. I felt as though I was just not passionate enough about tennis to talk that much about it, even though it was only a minute it just didn't flow the way that i wanted it to.

  20. I thought my speech went pretty good, I should've brought in some bacon, egg, and cheese bagels for everyone, but that would've been pretty hard, but I thought maybe my speeches still need to be more organized.

I thought that Luke's speech was very good, his drawing was pretty crazy and cool.

I thought Drew's speech was great as well. He really seemed confident up there and also I liked his topic as well.

    1. Bryce, I thought you did a good job on your speech. Even though you didn't bring in food, you painted a picture of what you do at home. And I agree bringing in food wouldve been cool, but also very difficult and not worth it for a 2 minute speech. Overall it was a good speech so good job!

  21. I think my speech went okay. I should have practiced more because I ended up skipping over one part of my speech. My eye contact could have been better too. The night before and morning of I was really confident about this speech but then right before the speech I got really nervous and the fact that I was being recorded did not help. I am glad I was able to bring in some medals, the plaque and showing the video because it gave a little bit more to the speech.

I really liked Billy's speech because he did a good job with telling us what he does as a racer. He had pretty good sound but seemed a little nervous. I did not know a lot about the racing he did with all the maintaining speed and everything so it was nice to learn something new.

  22. I think that my speech went pretty well considering I didn't practice. Once again, I found myself pausing and looking at the ground. I'm glad I was able to speak at a good pace and finish strong. I thing bringing the plaque was a good way to try to get the audience involved. But for the next speech, its clear that I have to practice!

  23. I think my speech went well. I felt like I talked well about myself and I felt like the class responded well to it. I would have looked around the class more but I was too busy trying to remember how that season went. I didn't practice alot, but I felt like I went up there and did my best!

  24. I think my speech went very well, I felt like i had very good eye contact with the audience. I made sure to talk slowly and clearly which I think made it much easier and less nerve racking. I thought i did a good job of transitioning into my video clips, and it worked out in my favor in the long run.
