Informative Speech

Write one well-written and thought-out paragraph. Use complete sentences and correct grammar. Upper class students should be writing paragraphs with compound and complex sentences that are a minimum of six sentences long. Please specifically comment on your introduction, conclusion, and visual aid. For your introduction--did you cover the four points of a good introduction? Conclusion--solid? Are all three parts included? Visual aid-seamless? Did you read off of it or was it an incorporated part of your speech?

In addition, you may comment on the following aspects as well:
  1. Eye Contact
  2. Nervousness
  3. Audience Feedback
  4. Preparation--did you practice enough? Too much?
  5. Speaking rate (too fast? too slow? too many pauses?)
  6. Gestures (Did you do any?)
  7. Poise and Presence
  8. Organization
  9. Facial Expressions
  10. Dressed and groomed?
  11. Outline

What went well? What do you need to work on for the next speech? Be as specific as possible!

In addition, leave feedback for at least two students. Feedback should be specific and original

  2. Lauren did a awesome job today she always gives great speeches every time she is one of the greatest speakers in the class. She speaks so smoothly and calm up there like she is having a conversation or talking to herself in the mirror. She really has a gift. I really wish I had her speaking skills.

  3. I Think this one of my greatest speech so far I should have been more prepared and I should have went longer but I think I did a good job not great but good. I wish I did a topic on something else but I couldn't think of anything else at the time. I could've showed more eye contact and I just wasn't myself up there I need to get more comfortable up there I feel like I'm a zombie and get nervous but I'm getting more and more every speech getting in my comfort zone.

    1. Don, this speech was definitely one of your best so far. I think you did a great job of organizing your information and making it interesting even when it may have seemed monatonous. You had much better eye contact and fewer pauses which was good. Keep up the good work,

  4. Sean did a great job I think this was his best speech yet I really liked it because it had Legos blocks in it I love Lego star wars It was like the greatest game in the universe. Sean also has great speaking skills I like how he showed the trailer because I didn't know there was a Lego movie coming out but Sean great job.

  5. My speech was good overall, I had good eye contact good gestures and an interesting topic. One of my better speeches overall but not my best and I could have been a bit more descriptive on some parts.

  6. Lauren's speech was great it connected to most of the audience and was really cool. I am one with the comics and superheroes (especially hulk). Great eye contact and pretty good gestures, seemed a bit nervous though.

  8. Dakota's speech was pretty good not the most informative and lacked a bit of information on some stuff, but was overall pretty good he lacked in eye contact and gestures because he was glued on his manuscript. So overall not his best speech and was lacking in some aspects.

  9. I thought my speech was alright. I know I wasn't suppose to be too broad but I ended up being too narrow on my speech. My introduction was probably the best part of my speech. My conclusion did wrap up everything I talked about in my speech but was quite short and I could have made it more interesting. My visual aid for the most part helped my speech a lot and tied in quite well to what I was saying. Overall not my best speech but I did have some good parts within it.

I really liked Jon's speech. He was able to inform quite well on the Rap Genre and make it really interesting. I learned a lot of new information, and might even listen to more of the rap he likes over the general mainstream stuff.
I enjoyed Drew's speech a great deal as well. Who knew that arcade games made billions of dollars back in the 1980s and 1990s. I realize they made a lot of money but not that much. Drew's conclusion with the urban legend arcade game was very interesting and helped him conclude well. Overall a great speech and Drew knew what he was talking about.

    1. In my opinion Dakota did a great job. By teaching me everything I need to know for if a Zombie apocalypse would occur.

    2. Dakota piked a very connectable topic because every one has seen a movie played a video game of read a book that had zombies in it. Like always he was cool and relaxed. He informed us on ho to properly defend ourselves from an zombie attack. This is good because I would not have known what to do if one were to happen. he also had good eye contact and had a constant rate. over all a great speech.

      Delete
    3. I think Dakota's speech was very interesting. The topic he chose was a rather hard one, as the situation was only hypothetical. As with most of the speeches, the eye contact was not the best. He did a very good job of painting a picture of how to survive a zombie apocalypse, and he seemed very well-informed on this topic.

  10. I believe that my speech went well. I didn't even know I was being filmed I believe I improved on my eye contact. I tried to keep my topic narrow and not so broad I think I did pretty good job with that. I thought the entire time that I was under time but had more than enough

  11. I feel very strongly about my topic and I think it showed. Concussion shouldn't be taken lightly and everyone should know that. I always feel nervous at first whenever I give a speech, but I got over it pretty quickly this time. I don't really use hand gestures because I feel awkward doing them. I tried my best to make eye contact, but I felt myself looking down at my papers a lot. The video I showed kept people's attention. I felt pretty confident considering I wad the first one to go. I always talk fast, that's just how . I talk all the time, but none the less I thought everyone could understand what o was saying. My speech went longer than expected, when I practice it only took about 10 minutes. Over all this speech wad a little draining for so.e people and I know that, but it was very informative.

  12. I thought that my speech went alright. I think the biggest problems were the lack of eye contact with the audience and I did stumble over some words. I also failed with the visual aid by forgetting half way through the speech that I needed to change the slides. I think I projected enough. I do not know how interesting the audience found the topic, but when I was researching I thought it was sort of interesting. The best aspect of this speech for me was that I didn't feel as nervous as I did in some of my previous speeches.

Billy did a good job with his speech. He was loud enough and he had a pretty good visual aid in showing the audience the different gear he has. He seemed to show that the topic was important to him. The one thing that I am not sure if it was a positive or a negative was he sort of sounded like a safety instructor for a large portion of the speech when he was going over all the rules of safety.

I also thought that Gaby's speech was well done. She had a good visual aid to go along with it. The speech overall was put together well. The conclusion seemed to work very smoothly to go along with the interesting speech but the one thing I really didn't get was the final statement: "Is it in you?". The thing I didn't get was that this statement didn't really have a whole lot to do with the content of the speech but it sounded good, and it was a good idea for ending the speech.

    1. I really liked Luke's speech. The reason i did so was i never gave much thought about my dreams. or why i have them or how i know if I am in a dream. every time Luke gets up to speak he seams to get more comfortable, or fools us very well. over all a really good speech with good eye contact and good connectivity because every one dreams.

      Delete
    2. I think Luke did a good job on his speech overall. Having a manuscript caused him to have less eye contact, which made it harder for him to connect with the audience. He did a good job in choosing a topic, as it was not too broad or narrow. While up there, Luke seemed as though he knew more about the topic than anyone in the room, and he also appeared confident. I believe the combination of these two qualities helped improve his speech greatly.

  13. I think that my speech went rather well. I really enjoyed my topic since it was such a big part of my child hood. I hope i informed people on something that people did not know a lot about. I put a lot of time into my speech. I tried not to get to far off topic, tried to make good eye contact since my notes were on the laptop, and I tried to connect with the audience in my introduction to keep them entertained.

  14. I felt as though this was one of my strongest speeches. I believe I knew the most about my topic, and this helped improve my confidence. I think I picked an interesting topic, but I am not sure how interesting the topic was to others. I had decent eye contact for a manuscript speech, but I could always have more. I felt like I did a good job on the basics of my speech, such as my rate, posture, poise, etc. I could have had a better visual aid, such as a PowerPoint, but I believe I did pretty well with what I had. While there were some aspects of my speech where I suffered, I thought I did a good job overall.

    1. Conor, I think your speech was very interesting. It's common knowledge that you're a good ping pong player and even though you had a manuscript it barely sounded like it. Being able to use your visual aid to demonstrate things to the audience helped capture our attention. Good job!

    2. Connor- I thought your speech was very interesting! I now know a lot of cool new ping pong techniques- like the pendulum! I love how you gave a speech on something you enjoy doing it definitely brings more emotion into it. I also liked how you actually demonstrated the move instead of just describing it. I thought your eye contact was good for using a manuscript, and I think this was one of your best speeches yet !

  15. I personally think that I didn't do very well on this speech. I thought during my speech that I was making good eye contact with the audience, but after watching my video it seems as though I rarely looked up from my manuscript. I also feel like I wasn't able to connect with this speech because since it was based on research, I wasn't as confident giving the information. However, I am feeling less nervous when giving speeches in fron of the class. I do think that the comic book as my visual aid was a good idea becuase some people may not have seen a comic book from the 1970's before. My conclusion at the end was pretty decent, until the end. I tried to make eye contact during the last sentence, but I lost my train of thought. Hopefully that doesn't happen again.

As always Jon does a really great job with his speeches. He always has an energy that keeps the audience listening. It didn't even seem like he was talking for 15 minutes, which I think is good instead of thinking the person keeps rambling on.The only thing I think he should've done was time his speech before he presented to the class.

I think Bryce did a good job today. For having a page of his outline missing, he did a really good job remembering what to say. He also had great eye contact. The only thing that he can still improve on is not saying um so much.

    1. While your eye contact could have been better, I thought that the speech was pretty good overall. The actual content of the speech was very good and it was clear that you did a decent amount of research. It might help to practice with or look over your manuscript but then cut it down to a very detailed outline so that you ad-lib and connect more.

    2. Lauren, I really enjoyed learning about comic books! I can honestly say that I had never read a comic in my life because I thought they were boring. Now that I have heard your speech I have a new found interest for learning more about comics. I found it interesting all of the facts that you brought up. I always look forward to your speeches because I always learn from then!

  16. I think my speech went well even with going over a few minutes. My eye contact could've been better but I seem to have to work on that a lot of the time. Although I felt like my eye contact was better than usual but, like I said before, still needs some work. I used a manuscript and while that was nice I need to not read so much straight from the paper but actually speak and use more inflection when I'm talking. Overall I thought my speech went very well and I'm hoping I did a good job informing everyone about forensic science.

Jon's speech was a speech that really stuck out to me. I liked how he showed some examples via videos of the different styles of rap music. He did a good job informing the audience about that style of music because, being one who doesn't know a lot about rap music, he told us about things that most people don't know. His eye contact and pace was also really good an kept everyone engaged it seemed making those 15 minutes feel like only 7. I also liked how he included his personal opinion and experiences with the genre of music.

Michael also gave a good speech. He picked a good topic that connected really well with everyone in the audience since most people own something made by Nike. He also added in some really interesting facts and stats about the company like side companies that they own and how much they have grown throughout the years. He spoke really well by keeping a steady pace and he used pauses well too. His visual aid was put together well. He didn't have it jumping all over the place but it was very organized. Overall Michael delivered a great speech.

    1. Alison I thought you did a great job, it was very informative and it taught me alot about forensic science that I didn't know. You seemed very poised up there and I never got the feeling that you were nervous. And you had a great prezi. Good job!

  17. overall I thought I did a decent job. Wasn't the best topic and I didn't really connect to the whole audience. Eye contact has always been the thing I do the worse, and hopefully i can become better at it. The powerpoint really helped me and it gave the audience a visual on what my topic was. But in the end I feel like I could have done

    1. Jon also did a great job. His speech was long but i never got the feeling like it was too long. It was great information and he seemed confident in his research and in himself. Videos were awesome because it showed old school to new school and I think it was very well thought out. I think he did did a fantastic job

  18. I thought my speech went not too good. The 2nd page of my outline didn't print so I was just freestyling the last part of my speech and conclusion. Also, I said "um" way way to many times and I need to work on that. Also, my eye contact was not good at all. There really wasn't anything good about my speech.

I thought Dakota's speech was good because it was related to my topic and I liked it. I liked it because he was very informative about his topic and just his general vibe about him was very nice.

I also thought Lauren's speech was great because she always does a good job. She had a very interesting topic and was very particular on her statistics and facts.

  19. I thought that my speech didn't go very well this time. I wasn't thoroughly prepared, I forgot when to change my slides, and I panicked before I went up to give it. In the future I need to allow myself more time to work on research for speeches such as this one. I don't think my eye contact was all that good, and I was much more nervous than usual. I probably should've practiced more as well, because I did stumble over some words of my speech.

I liked Melonie's speech a lot, because she seemed to know what she was talking about and even worked in familiar objects so we knew exactly what was being put in our food. I don't think I'll ever eat at McDonald's again, but that's probably a good thing.

I also liked Grace's speech. She seemed like she had researched the subjects very well, and she even put in a very convincing video. She had good eye contact, and she didn't lose her place when the bell rang. I wish I could've been as confident with my speech.

  20. I feel like this speech was not one of my best. I wrote out my outline and did all of my research over a week before I actually gave my speech. This meant that I wasn't completely familiar with my information when the speech day finally came. I also knew that i was pressed for time because there was only a few minutes left in class. This caused me to rush, skip things, and lose my voice. My rate and voice didn't seem natural and I felt like my speech was disjointed. I definitely was looking down at my outline too much and didn't elaborate enough. I should go over my materials again when it gets close to speech day especially if I'm one of the later ones. I was organized and had a prepared outline which definitely helped for this speech. I hope my next one will be an improvement.

  21. I thought my speech went well. I felt bad when I thought I was the only one to do their speech Monday. But i'm glad Bryce didn't go yet until Monday too. I felt my eye contact was good; as well as asking a question and people reponding back felt great.

Lauren's speech was cool. I liked her topic of comic books. Coming from someone who enjoys reading comic books.

Grace's speech was good but also it's a topic that most people could relate to. It's something that girls go through but once they start having an eating disorder, they cannot easily escape it.

    1. I enjoyed Melonies speech. I knew that the food was bad for you, but not that bad for you. I was really taken back by how much non meat go into the food. To say the least I was grossed out. She did really good research on her topic. It really opened my eyes to food. If I could I would never eat again.

  22. I had a lot of fun putting this speech together. Everyone has seen something that has to do with gatorade, but do they really know where it came from? I'm glad I could bring more knowledge to my audience about the product. i was nervous in the beginning, but my nervousness seemed to decrease right away. I feel like my eye contact was weak because I was using a manuscript, but I like having my speech written all out.I brought in the Gatorade so the audience would connect with me more, and I think it worked since it was all gone! Overall, I was prepared for this speech, and I had fun presenting it!

    1. I really liked Jon's speech too! Even though it was a little long, it honestly didn't feel like it. It was packed with information that I never knew before. His eye contact was good, and I felt like he was more prepared for this speech then he has been in his past speeches. I've known Jon for a long time, and I knew he was always passionate about rap, but I never knew why, and now I do! He didn't seem nervous at all, and I feel like everyone enjoyed his speech, even the people who don't really care for rap. Definitely one of my favorite speeches yet!

    2. I think Gaby did an amazing job on her speech! I think she really informed us about Gatorade and what it helps. I didn't know that it can really improve a players performance before I heard the speech. I liked how she explained how it came to be, and how it became more popular. Also I think it helped when she brought in Gatorade for the entire class, I think it helped her connect.

    3. Gaby, I thought your speech was very informative. I agree that this was a great topic because everyone has tried and probably drank it too. I liked that you took the time to research about a topic that everyone knows about and likes. The fact that you brought in Gatorade made it cool. I think that you had very good eye contact. I could tell that you practiced a lot because you had most of your speech memorized. Good job Gaby!!

    4. I really liked Gaby's speech, it was really good. As an athlete, I often use gatorade as a tool to get my through my games when im tired, or the weather is hot. It was really cool to learn so many details about the product i've been using almsot my entire sports career. Also it was cool to know where they made it and why. It wasn't just a ploy to make money, they actually made it for the Florida Gators to perform better. It was thoughtful that you brought in bottles of gatorade for us gaby, so thank you!

  23. This is probably one of the better speeches I've given. I feel like the eye contact was pretty good, considering I was using a manuscript. Using just pictures of the PowerPoint worked out pretty well. I wish I'd been able to cut down the speech enough to include a portion of song, but I'm just glad I was able to finish within the time limit. The conclusion was probably the best part of the overall speech; it helps to have something very good already written, like those lyrics.

Jon's speech went very well. He took a topic that a lot of people think is very immature and demonstrated how interesting and deep rap can actually be. While he did go over, it's telling that at no point was I hoping he would just end it. Obviously, the overall polish could be improved to make the speech more clean, but in a way the bit of roughness contributed to making the speech feel genuine.

    1. Travis your speech is very fundamentally sound and taught me a lot that I didn't know about the Beatles. You had good eye contact, good projection, and your speech flowed nicely together with your power point. Overall it was your best speech so far and there wasn't anything bad I could pick out.

  24. I thought I did a fairly well speech. My eye contact was alright i caught myself looking at my paper alot. I think i was prepared pretty well, i ran through the speech a couple times. My voice was good but i tend to mumble and be oblivious to it.

  25. This speech was my best one yet. Besides the nerves at the beginning my eye contact, flow, and projection. Along with that my topic was something close to my heart and a topic I definitely will come back to in later speeches. I was using an out line which is what I'm most comfortable with. Unlike most people I brought in objects to demonstrate what I was talking about where as others showed videos and power points. Also I hit another one of my goals by hitting the time limit. I think I had a time of 9:50. overall this speech was my best but there still is improvements to be made.

    1. I thought Jon's speech was good cause of all the info included in both his power point and speech. Even though he went long it was worth it cause his speech had that much info. His eye contact was good even though he had points where his flow was choppy overall his best speech by far. This should be a topic to come back on in the future.

  26. I really liked my topic. Its something that I have done a lot of research on. I feel like it is an important subject to be addressed. I thought I did fine. I wish I would have made it shorter and maybe a little more to the point. But overall I think it was one of my better speeches. I made good eye contact and I feel like I felt more confident in what I was saying. I felt like I really connected to my audience.

  27. I really think my speech went well. I knew alot of the information, so saying it wasn't to hard for me because I didn't have to read it right off the paper. However, I did get a little monologue-ish while reading off the stats and records. Overall, this was one of my best speeches

  29. I'm pretty iffy on my speech. For some reason I was really nervous just because I wasn't sure how the class would recieve my topic. It really is something I am very passionate about. That and baseball are the two things i could go on for days talking about. As you could all tell, i didn't practice at all, hence why it was 15 minutes long. I guess I just didn't want to leave out any of the important stuff. Although I was very nervous I'm very glad i finally got to speak on such a personal passionate topic.
