1 Minute of Fame

What are you famous for doing? After your one minute of fame speech, reflect on it below. Write one well-written and thought-out paragraph. Use complete sentences and correct grammar. Upper classmen should be writing paragraphs with compound and complex sentences that are a minimum of six sentences long. Things to consider (you do not need to include all of them)

  1. eye contact
  2. nervousness
  3. audience feedback
  4. preparation
  5. speaking rate (too fast? too slow? too many pauses?)
  6. gestures (Did you do any?)
  7. poise and presence
  8. introduction and conclusion
  9. organization
  10. facial expressions
  11. The actual trick, talent, or gift you shared--would you do that again or pick something else?

What went well? What do you need to work on for the next speech? Be as specific as possible!

In addition, leave feedback for at least two students. Feedback should be specific and original

  1. For this speech I thought that I did ok. I did not practice my speech as much as I would have liked, which caused me to stumble on words a few times. However, I did my best to maintain eye contact, and to speak a bit louder so that everyone could hear me. Also, in the speech I had a pretty good introduction, but I did not like my conclusion as much. I believe that my speech was quite organized and that it flowed well too. Through my speech in this class I have been quite nervous, except for the impromptu speech, but for this speech I did not feel too nervous and was actually excited. If I were to do this speech again I would probably still do it on the Chinese yoyo, because it is one of my favorite things that I am good at.

    1. I was very impressed with your yoyo skills! Over-all the speech was well organized and flowed very nicely. Even if you didn't practice as much as you wanted, it still turned out very well. You looked very confident and spoke pretty clearly. Nice job!

    2. I really enjoyed your skills. I felt I have learned something totally new and thought it was intriguing. I felt this was one of your best speeches because you looked more comfortable on this one than I have seen on earlier speeches. I agree the introduction was good and so was eye contact. Great Job!

    3. You will have to teach me how to do that! It was very entertaining to watch and even though you could't show of the height you wanted, it still was extremely impressive. Your speech was very clear and you had great eye contact (considering the environment). I think that the only thing that was just a tiny bit lacking was a conclusion, but, once again, that wasn't your fault (darn chapel). Overall a great speech and one I wouldn't mind watching again!

    4. ur speech is great! i have just seen the chinese yo yo on the TV. It feels so different to actually "SEE" it!!!

  2. I have decided that this was not my favorite speech. Trying to pick something to present about myself was tricky. I decided on my topic the night before my speech and didn't do much practicing. I completely forgot my conclusion so my speech ended kind of abruptly. I think that my eye contact was pretty good but I did feel a little tethered to the podium. If I could do this speech again, I think I would muster up the courage and actually sing live for the class. I am excited for the manuscript speech because then I know I won't forget anything.

    1. I completely agree. This speech was a bit complicated with how to prepare for it and what to do. However, I would prefer not to sing for myself in front of people. It is not my forte. Anyways, your eye contact was great and I could hear you the entire time. Fantastic!

    2. I had a tough time deciding too and did not practice. I think because it only had to be a minute long we thought we did not need to practice. I liked your video and agree with what you said about your conclusion.

    3. Alyssa, I thought it was great to see little you up there singing and performing in your video. Your speech sounded like it was thoroughly prepared and it was very well done. However, you did look a little glued to the podium but overall you did great. Keep it up!!

    4. Hopefully Horton heard you during your speech...ahhhhh see what I did there??

    5. Alyssa, I thought your into was very good, and you had a good topic with all the material but then you ended so quickly with no conclusion that it really effected the overall turnout of your speech. Other than that it was a good speech.

  3. Overall I really liked this speech, but I felt that I could have had a stronger conclusion. There may have been one or two times where I was looking for words, but I thought that my pace, volume, and eye contact were ok. I prepared a few times for this speech in front of an actual person, and I think I got my main points across. Although, I wish I could have been talking while drawing the spongebob picture on the board, but I think that would have been awkward. My actual drawing of Spongebob on the whiteboard didn't turn out too bad, considering I rushed and wasn't drawing on paper. It may have not been the most interesting talent, but I enjoyed it!

    1. Over the years, I too have had my fair share of Spodgebob drawings. I really enjoyed what you offered in your speech. All the positive points you described on your speech I completely agree with. Another great speech! Nice job!

    2. Your speech was very well organized and as usual, you did not seem nervous at all! Evidence of preparation of this speech was definitely noticeable. Well done!

    3. Mike your speech was laid back and just fun to listen too. How you led up to the drawing was well done along with your eye contact and pace. Also it was a great drawing!

    4. Krupo, I really liked your speech on drawing a perfect SpongeBob. You made good eye contact while talking to the audience. Your pace and tone was very good as well. Then of course your drawing of SpongeBob was perfect.

    5. Krupo, to be honest with you, it does not take nearly as much talent to make spongebob as it does to make 3D squares. Overall i really liked what you were doing you defiantly had the right idea. I always look forward to when you give a speech, because you are a good looking, funny, and talented, and good looking guy. Oh did I say good looking twice? You stay classy mike

    6. Krupo, I really thought you did a good job taking a topic that so obscure and making it good. You did a great job with the drawing as well!

    7. Krupo, like always, you continue to entertain us with your hilarious speeches! It takes incredible charisma and wit to turn something as simple as drawing spongebob and make it entertaining and funny. You made excellent eye contact and gave off confidence, something that's not always easy for many people.

  4. After a couple wonderful impromptu speeches on my behalf, it was tough to follow up with this speech. I love acting, but I did not know how to base that into this speech. If I did a skit, I did not want it to take long. Also, I did not want to lecture the class on how to be a good actor for our age. It took a while for me to think and decided to show the "Check Please" scene I did. I felt my intro and conclusion were solid despite my last minute abilities on both. I know it took longer than it should, but I am glad I shared another story with my peers. I am glad I always have the confidence to keep consistent eye contact and volume. From acting, I feel these are my strong suits when going up there in front of everyone. Overall, not my best, but I felt it was still solid.

    1. I think a lot of people were unsure on preparing. Giving speeches on these topic was a little tough. You had a very cool video that you showed. Your acting will help you in this class

    2. I think it was a little tough to prepare for this speech as well. But you executed your speech very well Zach. Eye contact, pace, and tone was very well done and executed very well.

    3. I completely understand where you are coming from with not knowing how to present your topic, but you delivered your info well and showed an entertaining video.

  5. This was not one of my favorite speeches. I had a hard time choosing a topic. I did not practice a lot. I think I should have demonstrated something for my speech. If I were to redo this speech I would have chosen something else. I had some organized ideas and good eye contact. I need to work on my conclusions, they are usually just one sentence and cheesy. For me to keep improving I need to put a little more effort in and preform a little better.

    1. You had really good eye contact and seemed more confident in this speech. The only advice I have is just speak a tad louder.

    2. Actually Winter-fresh, being a ball player myself I was able to completely understand your speech haha. I'd agree though that either a demonstration/ object may have helped other people connect a little bit more to the speech. With the conclusions, I think everyone struggled, including myself, to come up with a strong one. But yes, I agree with Jibba from above... as your speeches progress your tone seems to be a lot more confident and sound.

  6. The hardest part of this speech, was finding a topic to talk about. Also, memorizing the speech could be difficult because you had to remember the whole speech. Any parts forgotten, could cause large holes in the speech. Eye contact was easy since there was no need to look down at a paper. The speech was very organize because it was fully planned out ahead of time. Because of this, my speech required a large amount of preparation.

    1. Stephen I felt like your speech was very well said and done. How you talked about your experience and gave it a personal touch really helped it run together. Also great eye contact and volume.

    2. Jibba!! I really enjoyed this cross country speech and how you talked about how it affected you during different parts of your life. I thought that your tone and eye-contact were great. Although, more towards the beginning of the speech you may have been talking a little fast, but I was able to still understand. When you're at the podium, I feel like you just are one with it.... ha meaning that whatever you talk about up there seems to just feel so true to me!

  7. For me, this speech wasn't the greatest. Not only was it kind of difficult to pick a topic, but the preparation of it required a bit more, such as the memorization of it. Talking about my topic wasn't the hard part, but just remembering what I wanted to say about it. And when I couldn't remember, I'd just ramble a bit which threw me off course. Also being extremely tired when I presented didn't really help. Other than having good eye contact and gestures, I felt that going over my points a couple more times would've helped my speech go a lot smoother.

    1. Jaycee I think you did great on your speech. I loved all of your pictures and I honestly had no idea that you had ridden horses before. It was really fun to learn about that. You looked a little nervous up there but it seemed like you stayed on topic the whole time and ended up doing a very nice job.

    2. I actually really enjoyed your speech! It was cool to see all those horses and costumes and learn more about your interests. You seemed pretty organized, you had great tone and gestures. Your speech was wonderful and the only advise I can offer is to be a little bit more confident in your own speaking abilities. :)

  8. I had so much fun with this speech. I absolutely love memorized speeches. My presentation was a bit lacking, though. Even though I was not nervous, my words were not in sync with my hands turning the rubiks cube. I finished the cube before I was done talking which left me to kind of just stand up there talking awkwardly while not doing anything. My eye contact was a bit lacking too because I had to constantly be glancing down to make sure I wasn't messing anything up. I think that I practiced enough for this speech and did decently on it, but it could always get much better.

    1. I thought that your speech told the back story of your talent very well and being able to solve a rubiks cube while only looking at it half the time was very impressive.

    3. I really enjoyed your reasoning for learning how to solve the cube. I was very impressed with your rubix skills. I think you did pretty well with your eye contact and had a lot of confidence up there. You did a very nice job, keep up the good work!

  9. I feel that my speech went ok. I also think that tying this speech in with my introduction speech was a good idea. I wish that my printer had not messed up the color of the art, but at least it provided me with a joke to end on.

    1. I have been really over-analyzing your speeches in hopes to be able to give you the best feedback that I can. You are definitely improving in what I had discussed last week, which was your stringing of ideas. I also really enjoyed your sense of humor that was integrated within your speech by accident. I also thought your content, which was your talent, was very interesting! I believe that, you have a lot more confidence than from the first speech. I can only assume that you are getting more comfortable with talking in front of the class. Your eye-contact, volume, and pace were defiantly excellent, as always. I am defiantly looking forward to the next speech.

    2. Nick you are probably in the top 3 of my favorite speakers! Moseley because you have the greatest conclusions to your speeches, they make me laugh everytime! Besides that you did great job all around! I give this speech a 10/10!

  10. My speech overall, I thought was pretty good. It went surprisingly longer that I thought it would. It was only supposed to be a minute, but when I stopped my timer, it said 2:18. It didn't even feel that long. I was feeling a little nervous because I didn't really write out my speech. I did practice, but didn't practice as much as I wanted to. I need to also practice on my pace. i felt like I was going a little to fast and also didn't feel like I was talking not as clear as I could've.

    1. I for one know very little about baseball so I cannot say much about your content in respects to its mutual personal impact. However, I can talk about how, you did in fact explain everything clearly so I defiantly felt like I learned about baseball just from your speech. I also thought you had excellent volume and eye-contact. I could also tell that, you thought of that moment in your baseball career, as a very amazing experience. In conclusion, I thought you were very thorough with your speech and you made it very personal even to those, like me, who didn't understand much, still feel like we could relate. I am looking forward to your next speech.

  11. I enjoyed doing this speech. Although at first it was difficult to choose a topic, as soon as I got over the idea that it HAD to be a talent. I thought it went pretty well. I stumbled on the song part, which, admittedly, I could have practiced more for. I was pretty confident and (correct me if I'm wrong) had good eye contact. Overall, I wish (once again) that I had practice a little more and in front of a "live audience". Otherwise this was one of my favorites yet.

    1. Gabby,
I felt that you did very well on your one minute of fame speech, and I personally enjoyed it. You seemed very comfortable and confident when giving the speech and you had good eye contact. Your song was very cool, and I would probably never be able to do that. However, like you said you stumbled on the song a few times, so next time you should practice the important part of your speech a bit more.

    2. your song was amazing, I can not sing that quick even in my home language. I really enjoyed listen to your speech. You looked really confident, you had really good eye contact. you voice is really good, I can hear it really well, and I think you did a really good job ^~^

  12. For this speech, I fully believe that it was a lot harder then I imagined it to be. First of all, I could decide whether i wanted to play something that I had learned or if i should write a piece, so to start, I was very conflicted. When I actually did my speech, I was so nervous, to the point that I couldn't even find the words to say. After, I gave my short speech I sat down, and waited for something to happen. I read like a verse from psalm 33, and suddenly I had feelings of panic, however not the same as panic for my speech ,but the feeling of panic translated into music. Then, it started to leave and nothing was there, and I looked up at the passage, and unfortunately my Bible did not want to cooperate with the piano. So, I opened it up ,and read more from the passage then the feelings came back and it was, like panic and fear. Like being on a ledge of a tall building and looking down, then it changed into feelings of inspiration, or new ideas or almost like an epiphany feeling. Then it changed, to like conflict, but it was like conflict you feel when you don't understand something, then it moved to like a satisfying or pleased feeling. Its really hard to explain. Nevertheless, I believe that the speaking portion should have been longer. I also believe that if I would have practiced more, that I would have done better on the speech portion. I also believe I should have picked something more clear and understandable not only for the audience ,but even for myself, because I don't even know how to explain it.

    1. Chris,
I thought that your one minute of fame speech was very good. Though you did not think you speech portion was that good, I don’t think it was too short and you have my full attention. However, you did seem a bit nervous, so I suggest practicing a bit more, and maybe even in front of a live audience. Your piano playing was very good and I really liked the fact how you pulled inspiration for music out of the bible.

    2. Chris, you are unbelievably talented. You were my favorite speech. It is amazing to see that a human can even physically do what you were able to do. It was truly amazing. I feel like speaking on the other hand comes very naturally to you as well. Keep up the good work.

    4. Your speech, to be frank, was pretty awesome. You're an amazingly talented piano player to begin with, but to compose something on the fly is extraordinary; it was a pleasant surprise. I hope that you continue to do this and become an even better player! I wish I had as much dedication as you when it comes to pursuing something.

  13. I had a lot of fun with this speech. It was too bad that I hurt my arm which kept me from being able to do what I originally wanted to but I feel like I was prepared for what I was doing and I showed poise and confidence up there. I still feel there is plenty that I have to work on before I can be counted as a good speaker. I am looking forward to seeing what people have to say!

    1. I have to say, your speech was one of the most interesting speeches to watch. Your cubes were quite impressive. I could tell you were very confident and having fun up in front of the class. It did seem a little impromptu but it was still very good. Every time I draw a cube in class i will think of this speech. Great job!

  14. For this speech, I really did not prepare for it. I come up with the idea two days before my speech, and I have no idea how should I practice for the speech. I was so nervous because I did not prepared well, but I really have to finish my speech on Thursday. I think my eye contact was weak, and maybe I am a little quiet some time.

  16. I felt this went pretty well. Before hand I didn't really know what I was exactly going to say which made it a little hard to keep on track. Although this is something that I love doing it was a little difficult to talk about. I felt my eye contact wasn't very good at all, but ill keep working on that. I originally wanted to show some more clips but I had to do a lot of work just to get those eight that I had. All in all it went alright, but I hope to improve with the next speech.

  17. I wasn't prepared for this speech as much as I hoped. I thought of my topic the day of, so I really didn't have many main points. My eye contact, and gestures could have been better. I felt like I could have created my boat during the speech so my time would be more than it is.

Sherry: I really liked your speech/tutorial. Your confidence was great as always and your main points were clear.

  18. I really thought that I had a decent speech. Not having any notes with me forced me to make good eye contact. I didn't expect to have my speech go for as long as it did. I didn't really practice a conclusion or one that I liked so it was kind of impromptu. I rushed it a little and didn't explain what I really want to. Other than that I thought I did okay.

  19. Well... I definitely bombed on this. First of all, I prepared this speech only a few days before i started it, instead of capitalizing on the rich amount of time I was given. Second, it was done extremely poorly; I didn't provide a clear enough picture of my moment of fame. I also think my audience was confused because I inadequately described what In the Groove is. As a consequence of this, I was extremely nervous, which caused me to not make eye contact with the audience. This probably caused my audience to feel isolated and disconnected- a huge piece of interference when it comes to effective communication. Next time, I'll be sure to prepare!

    1. Anton, it was cool to see you be passionate about the subject you talked about! And honestly, I I think it was that passion that caused you to not describe what in the groove is very well! Because you were so excited to tell us what you like about it, you didn't have time to tell us what IT is! Above all, you did a all around good job, and look forward to more speeches from you!
