Persuasive/Convincing Speech

Leave the link to your video in a comment below by 11:59 p.m. 12/13/15. Then write one well-written and thought-out paragraph to reflect on your speech. Use complete sentences and correct grammar. Upper class students should be writing paragraphs with compound and complex sentences that are a minimum of six sentences long.

You may comment on the following aspects as well:
  1. Was the class persuaded? Do you feel you were persuasive or convincing enough?
  2. Eye contact
  3. Nervousness
  4. Preparation--did you practice enough? Too much? How many video takes did you have to do?
  5. Speaking rate (too fast? too slow? too many pauses?)
  6. Gestures (Did you do any?)
  7. Poise and presence accurately captured via video?
  8. Organization--did your speech have a natural organization structure?
  9. Facial expressions?
  10. Dressed and groomed?
  11. Was the background appropriate and not distracting?
  12. What would you change if you could do it all over again?

In addition, leave feedback for at least three students. Feedback should be specific and original. It should be obvious that you watched the entire video. Feedback is due December 18.

Quite honestly I hated this speech. I felt it was hard to get my point across through a screen instead of in person. I did not like having to record my speech. I thought my speaking rate and my eye contact was not to bad. If I were to do this over again, I would have tried to memorize more of my speech. I also wish I would have practiced a bit more. Overall I did not hate this type of speech, just the aspect of having to record it.

    3. Keilani I really enjoyed your speech! You had a great topic a great opening sentence. You also had great transitions and good voice tone and then you kept your eye contact and I really felt persuaded by your topic! I agree that fast food can definitely transform you into becoming someone you don't want to be it was it's very important to keep a healthy body. You had a lot of great information nice facts. Overall nice job Keilani

    4. I like the listed medical effects because it allows me to visual a human body as it becomes effected by all the disease until it shuts down. I like the nutritional data provided. I like the idea of eating home cooked healthier meals instead of fast food but often I barley have enough time to eat little more than some chips and other cereals.

    5. I liked how much information and data you packed into your speech! I thought your eye contact was good. I also liked that you provided the listener with other options and options that were just as quick as getting fast food. I think it was a good relatable topic and over all a very good speech!

    6. Keilani, I really liked this speech. I thought your eye contact was good, you rarely looked down at your note cards. I strongly connected with this speech because I personally completely avoid fast food, my family actually has become pretty educated on all of the nasty stuff it contains. But I still enjoyed learning more about the terrible effects it has on the body. I agree that families need to enjoy home-cooked meals more, and I believe that would drastically increase America's health. You packed a ton of information into this speech and I was interested the entire time. Good job overall!

    7. Your language is very fluent, the voices and organization are very good. Also, I highly agree your point that fast food may increase your risk of disease. Therefore, we need keep away from it.

    8. Keilani, overall, nice job. Your intro was captivating and had me wanting more information. The topic you chose was a good one because many people are ill informed on this subject. I agree that obesity is a growing problem in the world, especially in America. You had good eye contact. In some places, your sentences were a bit choppy, but it was not a major issue and did not prevent me from staying connected with what you were saying. Overall, great job!

    9. Keilani, I thought your speech went really well. You listed facts along with health concerns that I think really caught everyone's attention. It was smart of you to explain some of the words that you said, a few of them were confusing but you cleared them up. You made good eye contact and weren't reading off your paper the whole time. You also did a great job at slowing down your pace and making a connection with your audience. Nice job on this speech.

    10. I really liked this speech. Your intro was shocking and it really drew me in to listen to the rest of your speech. Your eye contact was great, but you did speak a little fast. Your speech was full of good, reliable information and it was a great topic to speak on. It was a great balance of opinion and facts. Your conclusion was strong. Overall, great job!

This speech was alright I had some malfunctions with the person running the camera. It took forever to upload but it finally came through. I actually felt really comfortable doing this speech. It was kind of fun and new. I feel I did an ok job with the eye contact in the camera, but felt that I could have done better with my eye contact when I read my stats. Other than that and a few mistakes, I did ok in my books.

    4. Tyler I loved the intro to your speech it was very creative! You had a great topic and I also get to into my phone and Internet. It was a great attention getter. You had poise and confidence. You had great eye contact. You could definitely see you had your speech memorized which is great! Your added gestures were great! Overall nice job!

    6. It is so fascinating, your intro was very different from others and it was very good. You had many body languages and clear topic, also you looked confidence. But next you should hide your speech draft under the camera and it will be more perfect. Good job!

    7. Nice job! You're speech was great. Your intro was very interesting and well done. Eye contact was good. Another thing that was done well was gestures. Your whole body was included in the frame, so the gestures were more noticeable and dramatic. One thing that was a bit distracting was the background. Other than that, nice speech!

    8. Tyler, I thought you did a great job on your introduction I think we all do this frequently. You did a good job with the influction in your voice and you didn't stutter but you did lose your place once or twice. Your topic was a hard one to argue in this day and age of computers in our pockets. Although I think you did a good job arguing your position. Well done and you didn't read off of your paper that much other than the facts you listed at the beginning. Nice speech

    9. Wow, Tyler! Your intro as super creative! I was really, really confused on why you were on your phone, but then it started making a lot of sense to me. Your topic was somewhat sensitive due to the world being somewhat "overtaken" by technology, but it was very well said. I do find myself getting sucked into the internet the way you talk about in your speech. I liked how the camera was positioned farther back to really show your expression and gestures. Overall, this was a really great speech!

I really did not like this speech at all. I felt it was harder to give a speech in front of a camera than in front of class. I'm bummed about my time. All the information I was looking up was pretty much the same on every site. I felt as if I showed no emotion and barely had any eye contact. The uploading and filming went well. I practiced about three times and filmed twice. I really did not like this speech as much as I thought.

    2. Sarah, your speech topic is actually very similar to mine (even though mine isn't turned in yet, it was on having shorter school days) so I kind of liked the different spin you had on that. I think this is a topic everybody in our age bracket can easily relate to, as I know plenty of us are exhausted during the school day and don't get enough sleep. You did a good job of citing sources in your speech, and I especially found it interesting the facts you found on how much better students perform in general with a bit of extra time to sleep in. There were plenty of statistics and facts to make this all seem very credible and convincing. My only suggestion is maybe to somehow pin your papers up somewhere near your recording device or something, they were a bit distracting. Also I'd suggest cutting out the few end seconds after you were done recording. But overall I really enjoyed it! Good job!

    4. I really liked your speech. You seemed very credible because you had many facts and statistics. You were very poised and confident. One thing I would suggest is to have someone hold your manuscript or prop them up somewhere. Then they would not be visible, as I found them to be a little bit distracting. Other than that, well done!

This was probably my least favorite speech. I do not think I was accurately able to convey my feelings as well through the screen as I would have been able to if I were to have done it in person. I had a few hand gestures, but most of them were at the end. Eye contact was good I think, but it seems like I was lacking in facial expression. Overall, I am a bit dissatisfied with how I did, but it definitely could have been worse.

    7. Your confidence intrigued me. You had a great start and a great finish. You made several solid points on beauty pageants. Yes they can harm the person physically, as well as mentally. Beauty pageants should all be banned in my opinion. They are useless and are an extreme waste of time and money. Your eye contact was amazing and your volume was well. I could've sworn that you cut out some parts of the video though and then continued from them which was distracting for a second but it carried on well.

I thought this speech was alright. I was pretty confident going into this speech partially because I didn't have to do it in front of the whole class. During the recording process, I had to stop and make another one because I would mess up and I would get annoyed, but luckily that happened at the beginning of my speech. Although I messed up a few times, I felt that I got the whole thing done in less takes than I thought. I felt my eye contact was iffy, but otherwise every thing else was good. Overall I feel alright about this speech.

    3. Pure Socialism is Communism. You don't need pure socialism to operate a nation effectively. A some what socialized state that operates market for primary resources could effetely be sold at incredibly low prices on the market of the nation to benefit the society. You can simply regulate education so that stricter policy enables individuals to progress in life. The Tax rate could be flat or curved to fit the means of the people. The Untied States is capitalistic market that operates poorly. You need to regulate industry or otherwise monopolies and all those supposed top 1% job creators are really just destroying the smaller market. I am a socialist myself but I would not advocate at all the system the U.S. uses. Really attacking the Healthcare system. There are so many things wrong with our healthcare system it is a joke. Obamacare Medicare all that is a load. Otherwise I really enjoyed your video and the material presented.
I am afraid you are looking directly at the extremes.

The bulk of your speech had plenty of facts and statistics, but I liked how you also threw your opinions in there a lot to help tug on the emotional side for the audience. It was blatantly obvious you're extremely educated and passionate on this topic. My only complaint would be you had almost no eye contact and the recording angle was a bit awkward looking.

    5. You covered a very appealing topic for the average high school student to watch. Especially once in high school, it is absolutely unacceptable to force a student to wear school uniforms. Think of it this way. A lot of people turn 18 before they even graduate high school and they are still restricted like that. I wouldn't always say that clothes express yourself that much because you cannot judge a book by its cover. You made a good point on how these uniforms just aren't fit for every person either, especially looking at their weight and height. I have a feeling that the reason that many schools enforce school uniforms, is because they just don't want to deal with all of the violations that students still make when they have more dressing freedoms, but this is not at all a reason for students to wear uniforms at school. You had really good eye contact and spoke at a good rate. It was overall a very well speech.

I did not enjoy this speech at all. I would much rather be in front of people, so that I can tell if the speech is going well, and then determine what direction to take it in. I just felt very unorganized and off the whole time. I did like the fact, that I was less nervous, but I still like to have an audience to see where the speech is going. 3. Sam I thought your speech was very thorough and well thought out. You had a lot of good info to back your idea. I agree with what you said about that it should be legalized. I liked that you mentioned how the crime has gone done in Colorado. Over all well done.

    4. Personally, I disagree with your speech topic, but your presentation was pretty good. Your eye contact was probably the best. Your pace and volume were good as well. One thing that was very distracting was that you were chewing gum. Other than that, your speech was god.

    5. Sam, I think you did a good job on presenting your view. I cannot say that I completely agree because it then gets hard to control what is out there because the government could issue a "safer" dose while a drug dealer could deal a dangerous dose for a cheaper price to keep customers coming back. Also, have you seen all the stupid things people do when they get drunk? It takes a few beers to get that going while one hit of marijuana can kick in at 5-10 min. tops. It gets harder to control what people do because they are not in their "right minds" this can cause problems for the general public that is not "high" because those who are don't think. It is quite frankly a safety risk. Although I do agree it does have some positives like medical marijuana, but even that needs to be overseen strictly to make sure others aren't using it for the wrong reasons. Now off the soap box and onto the feedback. You did a great job controlling your voice and showing a softer tone. You did a pretty good job with eye contact but I could tell that you were reading a bit. Otherwise I think you did a great job arguing your side of the argument. Nice job.

To be honest, I didn't like this speech at all. I had to keep redoing it all the time because I became very annoyed with even the littlest mistake. But, I told myself that this was the last take and I seemed to do better. I feel like it doesn't look like I made a lot of eye contact and that's discouraging to me. I worked so hard with going over my speech, time and time again. I just couldn't win. Also, I feel like i couldn't really capture the audience's emotion like I would be able to by doing it live. Honestly, I felt more nervous for this speech than any speech I did in front of the class. I am a much harder critic on myself than my classmates are.

    1. Randi, I have to admit I'm really bad at smiling. I'm a very happy optimistic person but my face doesn't always convey that well so I actually really enjoyed your video partly because of my personal experiences with always getting yelled at to smile more. You had a solid, slow pace throughout your whole video, which made it a little lengthy but I think it's better that you spoke slowly and clearly rather than rush through it just to make it shorter. Your filming angle made your gestures very strong. I liked how you tied in the facts on Americans and how we rarely have time off work and live unhealthy lifestyles, I honestly wasn't expecting this to be a topic that it'd be easy to find many facts on but you threw those in well. Lastly I thought your conclusion was very strong and wrapped it up well. How you progressed from our speech class to Martin Luther to Greendale and so on really drove the meaning of this speech home! Good job!

    2. Randi, your speech was interesting. Your topic was out of the ordinary and debatable, but you did a pretty good job of backing it up. You had good facts and statistics. Eye contact was good as well. Overall, nice job!

    3. Randi, you had a great topic. You showed lots of gestures and made great points. I think this was one of your best speeches because you actually slowed down and were understandable. It wasn't filled with facts which made it more personal. You did a great job changing your voice and sounding more comforting. Overall this was a really good speech. Keep it up.

  15. I just realized that the speech did on the class and the speech did in the camera is two different feeling. I have a personality that I need everything to be perfect, but I can not do perfectly on this speech. I filmed this speech like 10 times, and every time had some mistakes. Finally, I gave up and told myself this is the last time. Because I was ran out my patient. Every speech is so important to me. I just realized that I am a beginner and have lots of things need to learn.

    2. Sharon, it was a little hard to hear you. From what I understood though, your English was really good. You made many good points and you had lots of good gestures. It did look like you were reading a lot but for your level of English you did really well, I know I couldn't do this well if I had to do it in Spanish. Overall, the comics were a nice touch and really added a lot to your speech. Nice job.

  16. This speech was by far my least favorite, I was constantly going off on tangents in other takes and I was having a hard time with the stress of having to make it perfect. I finally decided to just go with the one that looked the best. I made decent eye contact but I was reading at some points. I tried to get a gesture or two in but it is hard when there isn't much room for them. Overall this was not a great speech for me and the content wasn't even all that interesting in the first place.

    1. Your speech had many good points to it to back up your statement on how life was better back then. Yes we have vaccines, but yes, they are definitely more of a risk than a benefit. Yes we are on our phones too much we have so many friends that we will never even meet in person. For me, I don't brag about the "amount of followers I have on Instagram" because I strictly only follow people that I do know face to face. I mean, why would I want to see pictures of someone that haven't or will never meet in person, it makes no sense. You also stated on how we text so much these days instead of face to face conversations, and not only that but you covered on how a text can be taken 400 different ways. It's all in the tone of voice it is said, but there is no tone of voice if it isn't being spoke, instead typed out. Overall, not only you made some very good points and covered them well, but you had the best eye contact and you spoke very fluently which made me understand and comprehend everything that you were saying.

  17. This speech was my least favorite of them all. I didn't like the recording and uploading thing due to it not being able to work on my sisters computer. When I recorded this speech I tried my best to have poise and to look nice. I thought my eye contact was overall well. There were times where I should've been looking at the webcam instead of in the distance. I tried to add many features but there wasn't much room or seeing space for them to show. Overall this speech wasn't so great but I thought my subject was a good topic.
