Persuasive/Convincing Speeches

Leave the link to your video in a comment below. Then write one well-written and thought-out paragraph to reflect on your speech. Use complete sentences and correct grammar. Upper class students should be writing paragraphs with compound and complex sentences that are a minimum of six sentences long.

You may comment on the following aspects as well:
  1. Was the class persuaded? Do you feel you were persuasive or convincing enough?
  2. Eye contact
  3. Nervousness
  4. Preparation--did you practice enough? Too much? How many video takes did you have to do?
  5. Speaking rate (too fast? too slow? too many pauses?)
  6. Gestures (Did you do any?)
  7. Poise and presence accurately captured via video?
  8. Organization--did your speech have a natural organization structure?
  9. Facial expressions?
  10. Dressed and groomed?
  11. Was the background appropriate and not distracting?
  12. What would you change if you could do it all over again?

In addition, leave feedback for at least three students. Feedback should be specific and original. It should be obvious that you watched the entire video.

    1. I like the way that you answer your question: "Is fast food bad for you?". How do you know that millions of Americans ask themselves this question though, unless it is something from a study? A couple of strange things are you sounded like you were kind of whispering and you sound sort of like it is an intervention for the audience to stop eating fast food. There are quite a few awkwardly long pauses. The biggest problem that I noticed was that you kept repeating the same points over and over, that fast food is bad for you and that it will cause health problems. The other problem is that there didn't seem to be a whole lot of fact based information or statistics. On the positive side, you spoke loud and clear enough to be heard and understood. You also had pretty good eye contact. You make a good point that it is better for you to cook a healthy meal instead of always going to fast food.

    2. James' speech used alot of good examples, especially the super size me reference. The camera angle was like a snapchat selfie, which was kind of awkward but the speech was good. He talks slowly which is good when trying to get a point across. He emphasizes a lot of words which I like. He gave tons of examples rather than general info which is better for a convincing speech.

    3. James this was your best speech yet your speech in my opinion was by far the best great job man you really opened my eye in the fast food category. To be honest I don't like fast food because it bad for you especially McDonalds but keep up the good work.

    1. You had lots of interesting information and statistics. The speech was very well written and you moved through it seamlessly. I thought that you spoke at a very quick rate, but you spoke clearly so it was easy to understand. There may have been a couple of moments when you could have added pauses. I personally wasn't really persuaded but I'm not sure how others may have felt about it. The speech overall was very well put together and executed.

    2. My speech probably could have been slowed down a little bit, but I'd say that the content and flow of the speech were very good. It was easy to find good sources (If something as conservative as the American Enterprise Institute agrees with liberals, its hard to find someone that doesn't.), and I ended up having a lot more than I could actually fit into the speech. I probably would have slowed down or added more, but I though the time limit was 8 minutes and not 10. These would be pretty much the only things I would think about changing.

      Delete
    3. Your speech definitely had a lot of credibility and sources to back up your topic. You knew what you were saying and you seemed relaxed through the speech. I like how you were able to transition through the speech fluidly but you probably lost a few people by talking so fast. Overall, a great speech.

    4. You had a lot of research and it added to your speech. A couple of things that could've had improvement on was a change in tone during some parts, maybe some hand gestures, and to slow down more. Other than that you are a great speaker!

    5. Travis had lots of stats, info, and research incorporated with his speech. Everything was well backed up too. Also his speech had good flow, maybe talked a little too fast but it was still understandable no doubt.

    6. Travis' speech had a very nice tone and pace. He made it interesting to listen to. His speech was also well laid out which made it nice to listen to too. He had very good facts about every point and it was easy to tell he knew what he was talking about. He could have used a little more eye contact but on a video that can be difficult so its understandable how he doesn't have a lot.

    7. I liked the lay out of Travis speech. His speech was a little quick but enjoyable. Travis is a great speaker and very good persuaing people to the side of his oppinion.

    1. I felt like a bit of a procrastinator for this speech. It was more relieving since it wasn't in front of an audience. Due to it being videoed I could then focus on the meaning I put behind the words, I wanted to make an impact. My eye contact however probably was not the greatest but I didn't want to seem like I was just staring at the camera. Once I wrote my speech and added a personal story, I checked to see how long my speech would be and I think it was at a pefect time, not too short and not too long. I was also glad that my speaking rate was slower than what I usually do. I think slowing down changes the tone of the speech and makes the audience know this is a serious subject.

    2. Lauren's speech was very nice to listen to. I liked how her tone went along with her speech in that sympathetic way that makes you vulnerable to adopting a pet. She had a good layout and the personal story was a nice touch. It made me want to adopt a pet from a rescue instead of from a breeder or non-rescue. She had good facts and they were more factual than statistics which made it nice to listen to

      Delete
    3. I think Lauren did an amazing job on her speech! During the course of speech class I have always been impressed with how talented Lauren is. This speech was really good, like always Lauren always connects with her audience. I like how she explained that its good to give money but you should always consider to adopt. I also liked how she went past the idea of getting the pet, but also how to take care of it after you get one.

    2. Your introduction was so awesome! I was sitting and laughing while I watched it because I feel that way all the time in Chinese! I totally connected, and I like how you pointed out the benefits of knowing another language besides your first one. This was a very good speech, but it seemed a little slow when you first started out after the Korean/Thai drama scene. I really liked it though!!!

    3. I thought i did pretty good in the speech. Second time recording myself and I didn't feel as nervous. I don't know why but to me, I sound kinda quiet when I spoke and I felt like I rambled on Blake's story. But I'm happy with the examples that friends Inhae and Shanika helped me with. But I'm happy with my speech overall.

    1. I felt really awkward during this speech. I wasn't a fan of videotaping myself speaking, because I didn't realize how flat and monotone I actually sound. I actually recorded myself about 10 times before I got a video without many errors. I feel like I could have done more research then I actually did but, overall I think I did okay. I used note cards so I feel like that caused me to have little eye contact. The fact sheets we did in class kept me on tract for this speech . If we didn't do those, I probably would have been so lost without them. As far as nervousness goes, I wasn't to nervous since I was by myself. I hope I made the class consider becoming a donor! Overall, I think I did okay, not my best nor favorite speech.

      Delete
    2. Nice job overall, Gaby! I didn't think you were flat or monotone at all. You seemed comfortable, relaxed, and knowledgeable. It was clear that you had practiced (or tried taping 10 times)! I think the notecards were better for eye contact than a piece of paper and you really looked up from them a lot. I'm glad the source pages helped! The delay on the camera was a bit distracting but the facts and info were solid. Nice work!

      Delete
    3. I really enjoyed Gaby's speech. I think she really explained a lot on the subject of organ donation. She didn't just touch the basic stuff but she went further into questions we might have about the matter. She also had a story to tell us about a child's death that saved many lives. Overall I was very impressed with the speech and how she didn't seem nervous. Good Job Gaby!!!!

    1. I was entertained throughout all of Dakota's speech. I think that the topic somewhat related to everyone, as almost all of us have driven a car. Probably the most distracting thing about his speech was the continuous use of the word "now". However, I think that this is an interesting topic and aside from the poor eye contact, it was a good speech

      Delete
    2. For myself I thought this speech was better than my last one for a variety of reasons. I covered alot of information in a decent and timely manner. I could have had slightly better eye contact I didn't think it was too bad. I could have perhaps dressed up a little more and had some better sources. Overall I thought it was a nice speech. My tone was great and I did have enthusiasm.

      Delete
    3. I really liked this speech! Dakota had nice posture which made it not awkward at all. He talked strongly towards the topic, which is always a great thing while trying to convince or persuade. I learned a lot from Dakota on this speech. He knows a lot cars, which helped him talking on the topic of street racing. I liked that he used Paul Walker as an example it really put that extra bit of truth and convincing to the speech.

      Delete
    4. Dakota you did a great job man your speaking ability it outstanding it was in the required time limit and everything and you know I think racing in the public would be very dangerous but you did a good job.

      Delete
    5. Dakota i thought this speech was a very good spech. The only thing you should change is be more enthusiastic. But the topic you picked was a good one and I think it was something you enjoyed talking about. Overall really good speech.

    6. I really enjoyed Dakota's speech. I thought it went very well. I was very impressed with how calm he seemed while giving the speech. Now before this speech I of course didn't know a lot about street racing, now I feel like I know a lot about the subject. He had good posture while giving the speech, he seemed relaxed. Overall I was very impressed, good job Dakota.

    7. Dakota your speech was very well done! You had great eye contact and abviously knew alot about street racing as you were preparing for this speech. i thought the angle you were sitting at leaning back was a bit distracting but other than that your speech was very captivating. You did a great job of connecting with the audience and making us interested in a topic we usually wouldn't be.

    1. The one big problem that I had with my speech was the time on it. I ended up falling short on the time, and another thing that got kind of messed up was the first word of the speech got cut off. Aside from those things, I think that the speech went well. I spoke loud enough and projected so that the words can be heard pretty well. I did the speech in a bible study room at my church, which worked out great because there wasn't anything to really distract me. Also the lectern worked out great. It did take a few takes to get through the speech. I was dressed appropriately and I don't think the background was real distracting. If I were to do it all over again, I would maybe slow it down a bit and add a few more personal thoughts to the speech.

      Delete
    2. I loved the lectern and shirt and tie, Sunny. Obviously, the speech could have been a little longer. I would have focused a lot less on the history of and general information about the death penalty and put a lot more into the actual arguments for it. You also needed to either recheck your information or your quoting of it because there are not and have never been 3,000 countries. Finally, you might have focused more on addressing arguments against the death penalty (cost, morality, constitutionality, prejudice), as the arguments in favor of it seem pretty simple and you managed to lay them out efficiently.

      Delete
    3. You presented yourself well by dressing up and being behind a lectern. Your introduction was well done and you seemed to know your information. It could have been a bit longer and you could have talked about the negatives of the death penalty at least briefly. Overall well done, just add more information and maybe show a bit more enthusiasm.

    1. I'm not sure the laid-back style really worked here, especially in the intro. For instance, if someone doesn't own a gun, you don't sound like you're actually talking to them. Also, you lost a lot a credibility less than 30 seconds in with the summary of the 2nd amendment and probably would have been better off just reading it. Overall, the speech was good, but could have been a lot better with practice and minor tweaks.

    2. Sean, this speech was not the worst of the year but you had plenty of better speeches. You had a very natural style that fit your personality well but I'm not sure that suited this speeches topic well. It seemed like you had done your research but just struggled to but it all together in an organized fashion. Your eye contact was very good as well as your facial expressions! Keep improving!

I also liked how you used hand gesture frequently throughout your speech. I would recommend not using the word, "stuff" so much, but the point definitely came across!!

    2. Okay, this speech was the best I've seen. This was absolutely entertaining. I was surprised at the beginning if you jumping in the air and winning you match. And you kept reminding us that wwe was scriped, not fake. You also told us information that was new to me. Like wrestlers would cut themselves with razors and actual injuries that happened during events. Also, kudos to you Drew when you kept going during a brief interuption. That made your speech even more less awkward because you continuted on until the end. Good Job

It made me realize that children, and people just like us are out there in the world starving and we take food for granted. Nice job Grace!

Usually in person you have this kind of excitement that you seemed to lack in this speech and it ended up sounding a little monotone. 1. I really like the opening. I like how you start with something more broad that's related. I like the background. It didn't really distract me, but it gave me something to look at besides you. You presented a lot of numbers. Your volume was really low, but the speech looked and sounded good aside from that. I liked the use of a bible verse. I also liked the transitions at the beginning and end. Aside from a couple of awkward pauses, the speech went really well.

    2. Honestly, I don't think you should have backed off on the murder thing. If a life is a life, even before birth, than it is murder and backing off doesn't help your case. Also, while your emotional argument was communicated very well, you might have included something more logical as well. For instance, medical evidence about fetal development or contraceptives as an alternative might have added a lot. Overall, nice speech.

  23. I honestly was a lot more comfortable with this speech than I thought I would be! The first time I clicked record I went for about a minute and screwed up and had to start over. The second time I just kept going even when I stumbled once or twice and I think it still sounded alright. I wasn't sure where the best place to film the speech was but it looked light enough and warm with the Christmas tree in the background. I feel like a did a good job of presenting my argument and I hope people really think about not texting while driving now that they know a little bit more about the dangers it can cause. I thought I did a goo job of looking up at the camera...it's a different feel not looking at a spread out audience, just a small camera, but I thought it was okay. I thought I organized my facts and info well along with my own thoughts and ideas on what people should do as well. I was dressed appropriately and I had scratches and cuts on my face from a wrestling tournament but I couldn't think of a way to make them magically disappear. If I could do this speech over again I would memorize the entire speech so I could be looking up the entire time.

I think was eye contact was good and my pace was better than I expected it to be, so thats alwasy good. I think this was a good speech and I had fun doing it

    1. Angel I thought your speech had alot of good information. You should have more emotion and you should have talked a bit louder other wise great speech. You improved alot from the first speech so keep going your getting better. Also you have good eye contact and very rarely looked at your paper. Overal good job.

    2. I thought you did very well Angel, I liked how you entertained for the introduction to kinda get the auidence going. Also, your pace and eye contact was good, alot better than some of your other speeches. You didn't seem nervous at all either which was good.

  30. Travis's speech was good i had no idea that we wasted so much time and money on the war on drugs. It was a good speech with lots of facts. He had a good pace and kept good eye contact even though it looked like he was reading off a teleprompter. Over all a really good speech.

  31. I felt that the topic I chose for my speech was a good one. I was able to give my opinion and was serious the entire time. As always, my eye contact was not the best. I felt confident and appeared confident as well. I was unaware of how quietly I was talking, or how poor my laptop was at picking up sound. Either way, I still should have spoken with more volume, Other than these minor setbacks, I feel this was a good speech

  32. I feel like this speech went very well for me. I knew all of my information and I found an appropriate way to incorporate all of it into my speech. I think I may have come across a little stiff on camera, but I think it went well overall. Unfortunately, I was 10 seconds short, but I think all of the information I presented made my opinion on my topic very clear and hopefully caused them to reconsider where they stand.

  33. Other than the fact that my speech was taken down this was deffinately my worst speech beacuse I kept looking up at the screen above it. also it went way to long. I should have shortened it up and not had such a long video. overall it was just bad and with all the technical problems for writing my over veiw and trying to repost my video it just became a hastle so if there was one speech i dont wann keep in the grade book it is this one.

  34. I felt like this was one of the worse speeches i have done. I felt awkward doing this speech. I'm a people person, so me just talking to a camera wasn't fun. I thought I really didn't connect with the audience. I was nervous and scared to do this speech and then put it on line. I really did not enjoy doing this speech. Overall, I really wish I could have done better.

  35. I was not very impressed with my speech. I thought I could have done way better. I had trouble with the video, I felt like it just wasn't personal. I never really like the sound of my own voice so when I did the speech and rewatched it I kept giving myself a hard time. I enjoyed the topic of my speech. I felt myself reading off my manuscript a lot more than usual. I had to keep redoing the speech because I couldn't find a quite place to film. Overall, I wish I could have done better.

  36. I thought Angel did a good job with his speech. Your introduction was good. I felt that you lacked some needed eye contact. Your information was good, you could have cited it a little better. It was a little short, but I thought it was very imformative. Overall, great job!

  38. I thought my speech went ok, I was kinda more nervous in front of a camera, I'm not sure why though. Also I guess I should've looked at the camera more but I found it hard to do that because it was just weird looking into a camera lens. Also, I guess my facts coould've have been backed up more. I also should've had more facts and statistics as well.
