Impromptu Speech

Please reflect on your impromptu speech by writing one well-written and thought-out paragraph. Use complete sentences and correct grammar. Upper classmen should be writing paragraphs with compound and complex sentences that are a minimum ofsix sentences long. Things to consider (you do not need to include all of them)

  1. eye contact
  2. nervousness
  3. audience feedback
  4. preparation (What did you do during your 2 minutes--would you do the same thing? Do you have advice for future impromptu speakers?)
  5. Speaking Rate (too fast? too slow? too many pauses?)
  6. gestures (Did you do any?)
  7. poise and presence
  8. confidence level
  9. introduction and conclusion
  10. organization
  11. facial expressions

What went well? What do you need to work on for the next speech? Would you want to try it again or are you glad it is done? Be as specific as possible!

In addition, leave feedback for at least two students. Feedback should be specific and original

  1. I feel like my speech went okay. Im not too good with thinking of something off the top of my head in front of people. Maybe infront of like 1 or 2 people. So my speech could have went a lot worse, but it didn't. I used more hand gestures than I was used to.

Megan- As usual Megan you are great at speeches. It flows out so naturally it seems for you! Your hand gestures are good. Your eye cotnact is really good. You seemed like 4% nervous. But you never really show those nervs. So good job!

Chance- Chance you have got so much better with speeches. The first ever speech i know you were terrified. As the weeks go on you get better and better. I am assuming by the end you will be a pro. You tend to take pauses and maybe not exactly use them right. I don't know what Im trying to say there 100%, but all I know is you've gotten way better at speeches! so good job chance!

  2. I feel that this was my best speech yet. Through out my entire speech I was making eye contact with the audience. I also think that I made good use of my hand gestures. During this speech I was barely nervous which I didn't expect. It was not quite as long as it was supposed to but I'm not to disappointed. All around my speech delivering is improving and I am excited for the rest of the semester!

  3. I did not feel like I did very well on my speech. I used filler words over and over again because I was not very well at thinking on my feet. I did feel that my gestures were much better and my eye contact was alright. I was not very nervous I just did not present my speech as well as I could of. I hope my speeches get better from here on out.

Mady- I really like how well you are able to think on your feet and you don't even need time to prepare. You just talk so naturally and always seem to know what to say. You never seem nervous either. All I would have to say is do more facial expressions and you are golden!

Chance- I loved your speech this time around and I could not stop laughing. You seemed a lot more comfortable and I think as more speeches happen you will be really good at public speaking. I would just say to make stronger conclusions. You have really improved overall.

  4. I think my speech was the best one that I have ever given. I din stutter or shake through the entire speech, I started making eye contact, used a few good hand gestures, and spoke clearly. That pause during the speech was pretty funny and overall I think my speech went well.

    1. I agree with you that was you're best speech so far. You seemed relaxed and knew where you were going with the speech and had nice hand gestures.

  5. I was not satisfied by the way I presented for this speech. My nerves got the best of me this time around and I lost my train of thought multiple times while presenting. I became repetitive very fast during this speech and I felt like I was not able to get that under control when I was speaking.

    1. Chance: Your speech was very good. You were clear, calm, and collected. The fact that you were telling a memory of yours made it easy to relate to and also I think it helped you feel confident speaking. I enjoyed your speech very much.

Nick: Despite the fact that not all of your speech was true, you painted a picture in the listeners mind. The ability to be able to put together that speech is rather impressive. It was a well done presentation.

    2. Trevor you never seem to be nervous giving a speech but you can sometimes be confusing but I really enjoy you're speeches.

  6. This was by far my favorite speech to give. It was comforting to know that everyone else was on the same level as myself. I knew that I could not be over prepared or under prepared. I felt that my eye contact was a lot better than my past speeches. I feel like I used less filler words than normal. If I only would have went six seconds longer, I would have been happier. Overall, I think that this was my best speech out of the three that I have given so far.

Chance- I thought that your speech was great. You can tell that you have come a long way since the beginning of this class. You seemed a lot more confident up there and your use of a story that actually happened to you was great. I believe that this was one of your better speeches.

Nick- I loved your intro. It was really catchy and caught my attention right away. The only advice that I would give you would be to not lie in your speech. Otherwise, I feel like you did a great job, especially because you gave your speech first.

Megan- You do fantastic on whatever speech you are given to present. It is amazing. You know exactly what you are going to talk about and you always have facts or statistics to support your topic. You had great eye contact and gestures. You are overall, an amazing speaker.

  7. I wasn’t a huge fan of the impromptu speech, but it wasn’t terrible. I wasn’t really nervous however I probably gave up too early. I thought my eye contact was a lot better since I didn’t have anything to look down at. I tried using more gestures while I was speaking. During my two minutes I should have spent more time on my conclusion.

Nick - This was my favorite speech from you so far. You made very good eye contact throughout the entire speech. Your intro and conclusion were solid.

Chance - This was obviously your favorite speech. It almost seems like you feel more comfortable when you don’t have anything prepared. Your one of the only people I can remember that stepped away from the podium, which was pretty cool.

  8. This is the speech that I was looking forwad to the most. I really love the challenge of improtu speeches and they are so much more fun because you have to say the first thing that comes to mind and try to tie it all back in. I felt like I had great eye contact and I am improving in this area. I was not very nervous just a little excited to see how it would play out. I ended up getting a few laughs in the opening which always helps to calm me down. I didn't really need a lot of prep time because the ideas came to me pretty fast. I thought my rate was pretty good and overall it was a well organized speech that I had a lot of fun with.

Cyrus- Your speech was one of my favorites. I could tell that you were feeling comfortable while giving this speech and it was your best yet. You were able to get some laughs and I believe that is a must in impromtu speechs. I loved your opening and the excellent story about your dreams. Keep up the good work!

Trevor- I thought you still did a very good job eventhough you were clearly nervous. Impromtu speeches are extremely hard espically if you have a topic that isn't exactly easy. This is only our third speech and it is the hardest yet because you do not get anytime to gather yourself. You are still doing an excellent job with your gestures, which is something that I still need to make sure I add into my speeches.

    1. Kyle, you are amazing at giving speeches. You are a natural at it. You were calm, you spoke clearly, used good hand gestures, made good eye contact, spoke at a good rate, and you had a lot of laughs. Overall you give the best speeches.

  9. This time around, I thought my speech was better. I think with each speech I am progressing a little bit more. My eye contact is getting better, but something I could still definitely improve. I only seemed to be nervous before my speech started, but once it did I felt much more confident. I tried hard to prepare in the two minutes, but still my thoughts could have been more organized. I think I get distracted when I hear people laugh at something I say, but I try to jump back into my speech as soon as I can. This time my gestures were completely natural, I didn't think about them at all.

Trevor- It seems like you are well prepared for your speeches and do gestures subconsciously, but rate and nervousness seem to be your weaknesses. Your strengths are great, you don't have to worry about them. Try to focus on keeping a steady voice throughout the whole speech, and try to make eye contact more with the audience instead of looking at your paper too much. But still, a good speech!

Troy- I really like your speeches. Each time you open up and let the class know something new about yourself. It's always intriguing to hear what you have to talk about. However, I think you need to work on conclusions a little bit, so you can end your speech with a solid finish.

  10. so far, the impromptu speech has been my favorite. Even though i was no where near prepared, I found it enjoyable. I think that it was easier to do the speech because there was really no expectations on how well it had to be. I did no feel the pressure of not preparing because no one else was able to either. I think that my eye contact is getting better and hopefully I can keep on improving. I should have slowed down my speaking rate just a tad, but I do not think it was that bad. I noticed I was swaying because I was nervous and hopefully as I gain for confidence, that will improve. Overall, I think i did okay and hopefully my next speech will be even better.

Megan - You are too good to even critique. You are a fantastic speaker and I know that no matter how much or how little time you have to prepare you will always knock the socks off of the rest of the class. You are very engaging; you make great eye contact, you are very confident, and you show no sign of nervousness. My one and only comment for you, is to maybe not walk around so much, but even when you do walk around you do it well. So, keep it up!

Kellie- I can defiantly tell that you are improving. whenever you speak it just sounds like a conversation with a friend. You are not using filler words as much which is great! When you make eye contact, make sure it is with the entire class and not just with your friends.

  11. I really enjoyed the impromptu speeches they were entertaining and quite enjoyable. These speeches made me feel less nervous considering no one was prepared and i actually thought it was some what fun. I still once again need to work on not swaying, its just a natural thing for me to do. I also need to work on organizing my thoughts, i just have so many that I get distracted with one thought then i realize i was not done with my last thought. In conclusion I thought my speech went pretty well.

Curtis- I thorolly enjoyed your speech you really got into it and i could see the passion you have for italian food! Ithink it was by far my favorite speech you did you were really natural in front of the class.

Trevor- As always I loved your speech you are just a great public speaker and your thoughts flow nicely. Your gestures are prime you never once looked nervous or timid you did a wonderful job!

  12. After I watched the video of me I realized I make the same hand motions every time and it's really driving me crazy. I hate this speech. I hate it. I wish I would have never watched that video. It was the easiest topic ever and I still suck at it. I had a super weak ending and if it wasn't for my sense of humor that speech would have sucked even more. I'm frustrated now.

Nick - You were the first speech up and you killed it. You didn't seem nervous at all, and you were super funny with it which I think was helpful because you set the bar for everyone else. Personally, I don't care that you lied about Russia, I think it made it more interesting to listen to and kept me intrigued. Favorite speech of the year so far!

Chance - You found your niche! You seemed so relaxed and confident up there! You never were like that before! I really hope you can carry on your demeanor from this speech onto your next speeches because then you'll really be on top of your game! Keep working on the eye contact though!

    1. Megan: I really liked your speech and as always you didn't seem nervous and this is probably because you are just a natural speaker. You had a great introduction but I think that your conclusion could have been a little better. You spoke at a good pace and had very good eye contact. I liked how toward the end, as you told the class how you saw yourself in the future, you thought out of the box and just put it out there how you imagine yourself or how you want to imagine yourself in a couple of years. You are one of my favorite speakers in the class, and you make it look so easy. Don't be so mad at yourself, it was an easy topic but it is hard to come up with a speech only two minutes after you get your topic. You did great!

  13. Megan, you are one of the best speakers in the class. You always speak clearly and make good eye contact. Nobody notices you using the same hand gestures.

  14. I thought that my speech went well but i didn't like the topics I got. If I had more time to think of a better topic maybe my speech would have went well. I tried really hard this speech not to say um, and i think I did a good job of it.

Troy- Your speech was good. You had great eye contact and spoke clear. The only criticism i have for you is to speak a little louder, other than that, great job!

Taylor- Your speech went really good. You didnt seem nervous and you seemed to put great ideas into your topic. Evey time that you have a speech it goes well. Great job!

  15. From Chance:
I felt ten times more confident with this speech. I wish we could only give impromptu speeches. I felt comfortable for the first time giving a speech. I like just going up there and giving a speech. No manuscript or note card. I finally made some eye contact in speech. instead of staring at a sheet of paper. Mrs. Dennert, I am begging you to do more impromptu speeches. Please. I think I finally got over my fear of giving a speech.

Curtis - I can tell from you're speech that you love Italian food. You looked very confident up there. You got into your speech, which helped us show hoe much you love Italian food.

Troy - I like how in every speech you have given, you have talked about your family. Every speech I learn something new about you. I like how you include personal stories into your speech. I really enjoy your speeches.

  16. I deffinetly felt more confident with my speech this time. I find it easier to make eye contact and gestures when I give my speech on the fly. I have to say that this has to be my favorite speech so far. It was a little less nervre racking for some reason when i got up there. I have no idea why but i seemed to enjoy it.

Chance- I thought your speech went very well. You seemed confident in what you were saying and seemed to enjoy it also. However your did still start playing with your lanyard again and that kinda was somewhat of a distracton. But other than that you did a nice job.

Kyle- As always you do not dissapoint. you are a very natural speaker and seem to be even better at making things up on the fly than anythign else. You make good eye contact and gestures, and your speech was relateable and easy to understand. So as always nice job.

  17. I felt as if i had done this a thousand times before and was very confident on this subject. I find it much more easier when i talk about something that is brought up right away then making me think about it. I am able to talk smoother, make easier eye contact and able to come up with thoughts that don't make me that nervous. I think this is the best speech that i have given so far and i must say that i think many other people feel the same way. i seemed to have fun when i did it as well and not as nervous which is great

Adam- I think you did a great job you didn't sound nervous at all and went up there with confidence, and seemed to enjoy it, I think you did well on making eye contact as well, although there were times were you would pause and hesitate for several seconds

troy- i think you did good you went easy and relaxed and didn't seem to nervous about it either so that's pretty good. your eye contact though was fairly simple and think you should have talked more to the people than to the entire audience if you know what i mean.

  18. I felt I had much more to say for my speech but forgot about it on the spot. I could have helped myself with that by using my two minutes more wisely and putting more bullet points down. I think I spook too fast and could have gone more in depth with specifics of my speech. I was not nervous at all for this speech and that helped me feel confident giving the speech. I had good eye contact and good facial expressions. Advice for someone going to do this speech write phrases or points you can talk about during the speech,

  21. I think that this speech was the worst one that I have given. I did not like doing it at all considering that if I don't have some organized way of getting prepared, I freak out and I don't know what I am doing. Even though I had two minutes to prepare, that was not enough for me considering that I over think everything and take longer on my preparation of things. When I got my topic, I was not very nervous at all, but it wasn't until I was half way through that I got nervous because I blanked out on what I was going to say. I don't even remember how good my eye contact was. I think that I was speaking too fast and that is why I got a super low time. I did not use any gestures at all and the only audience feedback that I got was laughs because they all realized that I ran out of things to say. My introduction was good but I did not even know how to conclude my speech. I think that my speech was very unorganized and I could have used more facial expressions. I am glad that this speech is done but if I could try it again, I would because I now have an idea of what to do and what not to do so that I could give a better speech. In conclusion, I had fun trying this speech but I am glad that it is over!

  22. From Mady:
I just rewatched my speech due to not having done the feedback. I realized I sound horrible on tape,. I don't seem very calm but I feel this was a strongest speech of mine. I could just be too hard on myself
Curits: Rewatching the videos the only thing I can see to work on is smacking your lips. Other than that I like all of your speeches.
Kyle: This was one of my favorites speeches you have had. You bring a lot of personality to all of your speeches. I think the only thing that you need to work on is looking up more and all around the room.

    1. Mady: I thought that you had a good introduction but your conclusion could have been better. I really liked your speech because you are just a natural speaker so it is interesting to listen to your speeches. You also seem to get into your speeches. It looked like you were not nervous but I think that you were speaking a little too fast. You spoke at a good volume and you were very clear. I also liked your speech because I can relate to what your thoughts are about the future and I also was thinking of being a special ed teacher considering that I also love kids. I currently am undecided on what I want to major in so I actually don't have a dream job at the moment. I can only tell you that you should pick something that makes you happy because I know that money is important in order to be successful, but in my opinion, happiness is at the top. You also used a little gestures and since you were holding on to the little paper the whole time, it was sort of distracting. In conclusion, you are a strong girl and I know that you will be successful in whatever you do in life!
