Informative Speech

Write one well-written and thought-out paragraph. Use complete sentences and correct grammar. Upper class students should be writing paragraphs with compound and complex sentences that are a minimum of six sentences long. Please specifically comment on your introduction, conclusion, and visual aid. For your introduction--did you cover the four points of a good introduction? Conclusion--solid? Are all three parts included? Visual aid-seamless? Did you read off of it or was it an incorporated part of your speech?

In addition, you may comment on the following aspects as well:
  1. Eye Contact
  2. Nervousness
  3. Audience Feedback
  4. Preparation--did you practice enough? Too much?
  5. Speaking rate (too fast? too slow? too many pauses?)
  6. Gestures (Did you do any?)
  7. Poise and Presence
  8. Organization
  9. Facial Expressions
  10. Dressed and groomed?
  11. Outline/Note Cards/Manuscript

What went well? What do you need to work on for the next speech? Be as specific as possible!

In addition, leave feedback for at least two students. Feedback should be specific and original

  2. I thought that my speech went pretty well. It went over the time limit, but I guess that it is better to be over the time limit than to be under. My introduction lacked connecting to the audience, but other than that I thought that it was quite clever. I thought that my visual aid was solid, but to improve it I could have shortened the slides to make it more simple for the audience. My conclusion was a bit shaky, because I blanked out before it and let my nerves get the best of me and, again, I didn't connect with the audience well. I did think that I did better with my eye contact with this speech.

Alexis- I thought you did really well on this speech. I loved how you incorporated the story into your speech. Your eye contact was a little less than usual, but that is expected with these longer speeches. Overall, good job!

Curtis- I loved your enthusiasm. I didn't know that someone could get so excited about pizza! If the computer would have cooperated with you, I think that you would be happier with your speech, but I thought that it was great. I found it really interesting that pizza did not originate in Italy, I have been lied to my whole life! This was your best speech yet!

Chance- You did really well with not moving around and you did a great job explaining your topic. You could have explained what each glove is used for and where on the field (maybe with a picture of the field). I thought that you had a great visual aid, and I learned that there is more than one type of glove (which is what I thought before your speech). Keep up the good work!

    1. Taylor - I thought that your speech was really good and I liked that you chose this topic. I liked learning about the different parts of the ears where piercings are done. I also like your facts and statistics because I could not believe that in some countries little newborn babies get their ears and nose pierced. I thought that you looked beautiful and that you had good volume and rate to your voice. In general, I can see you getting better and better in public speaking and your speech was good!

  3. alexis- I think my speech could have been better. I was really nervous for this speech, and I have no idea why. My intro i think was decent. I liked the story i used. It was sad in a way to get your attention, but not enuogh to ruin your day. I kind of liked my visual aid because it was kind of gross and made you want to look at it and understand what caused that. My conclusion was short and to the point. i need to work on eye contact.

Brandy- I liked your speech. I liked your visual aid because it got me interested because I have never seen such small clothes. I liked your topic and how you could relate to it because of your cousin. Eye contact was minumal as it was for most of the people. I like how you waited a little toward the end to show us your visual aid because it kept me wondering. Happy birthday chickita.

Katelyn- I liked your visual aid the most. The reason for that is becasue I learn by seeing. I can't just listen to things and remember that. The fact that you actually showed us how much water we needed helped me remeber that amount more! You had good eye contact. You also had a good tone. Good time and I could tell you practiced it.

Curtis- You had a good topic considering that I love pizza. You had good visual because the pictures looked very yummy. The yumminess kept me interested along with your happy tone. You had a lot of good facts. You seemed just a tad tad tad bit nervous, but we all are at times. Good job over all with the whole thing including the intro!

I thought my speech went okay. First of all I think I choose a pretty broad topic and i think that hurt that content portion of my speech. Also i struggled with speaking smoothly and I had more pauses and mistakes then I was okay with. I enjoyed doing this speech because i was very interested in the topic and it was fascinating to research. Also I think I could have done a better conclusion with a little bit more information. I think the strongest part of my speech was the introduction I thought I did a good job with making it interesting and attention grabbing. In conclusion this was not one of my better speeches but I enjoyed doing it.

    1. I thought you did pretty good on this speech Cole. There were definitely a couple things you could consider for your next speech however. Your eye contact wasn't as good as it usually is, and that kinda led to the choppy flow for the speech. Possibly because you would lose your place on the manuscript. I did like your topic choice, as it seemed like you were very interested in it and you did great research on it. I thought you were more poised during this speech, as you weren't swaying this time. It also was a good pace of the speech, as you didn't talk to fast. Overall, there are things to improve and things to keep doing great. Good job.

I thought this speech went pretty well. The topic was fun to research, so it was easier to write the speech about it. I really knew the first half of the speech, as I didn't stumble too much. However, I should have practiced more on the second half, as I seemed to stumble with a couple words here are there for it. I thought I did a lot better with not using "ums", as I tried my best to stray away from using filler words. I realized I use a lot of facial expressions during my speech, but I don't know if that is good or bad. Overall, I felt like I gave a good speech that would inform anyone who wanted to learn about hypnosis!

  6. Katelyn- I thought you did a really good job with this speech Katelyn! Your eye contact was great, and the flow of your speech was really good. I found your topic very interesting, as I learned a lot about water from listening to it. You did a lot of good research on this subject, and you it all fit well into your speech. Overall I was very impressed with your speech!

Chance- Your speech went very well! You seemed very interested and you knew a lot about the topic. I liked your hand gestures, as it was easily to follow the beginning with hand injuries and such. It seemed like your projected your voice well, as it was easy to hear you. Maybe something to work on is just the overall flow of the speech, as at some points it was a little choppy. Maybe running through your speech an extra time can help clear up any little awkward pauses. Otherwise I definitely fell more informed about baseball gloves! Good work!

  7. i think i could have done better, to be honest i studdered alot and was really inconsistant on the speech, my eye contact was good at first but then i wondered off to my page, becasuse i didnt remember the speech like i intended too, i was pretty nervous but then again everyone gets some sort of stage fright, my facial expressions were good i think, i deffinitely gave a good intro to this speech

Kaytlin- i believe your speech was the best because i learned so many wonderful things about water that i had no clue about before, and u demonstrated well how to give a speech

adam- yours stuck out like a sore thumb i dont know if its because i got to hold a piece of history in my hand or not but i think in general u did a great job on the informitive speech

  8. I thought that my speech went good. It wasn't as solid as I wanted it to be, but in general I think that my information on the topic was interesting. My introduction I think was good because it got people's attention since I talked about well-known celebrities. I also thought that it had all the parts of a good intro and that it was good in length before I actually got to the information in my speech. I think that my eye contact was bad and that I could have taken my eyes off of my paper a little bit more. I think that I was well dressed for my speech and that I could have used more hand gestures. I think that my conclusion was solid but could have been stronger. As for my visual aid, I thought it was good because it is something that showed the audience how small babies can actually be and it was my cousin which helped me be more connected to my speech. This also helped to get my audience feedback because the class was surprised when I showed them the tiny diapers. I wasn't nervous at all but I know that I was talking really fast and not clear. In general, I think my speech was okay but I know that with much more practice it could have been a lot better!

  9. I thought my speech went just okay. I got very emotional and tried to keep it together but my voice kept shaking throughout the whole speech. I thought my introduction was pretty good since it was personal experience and connected with people. My visual aid could have been better and I also forgot about it which wasn't good. I could have a stronger conclusion but I tied it in with my introduction. I wasn't very nervous and I prepared enough I felt. My rate was probably a little too fast, too. I felt this speech could have been stronger said if my voice wasn't so shaken.

Chance- I thought your speech was good overall! Your voice was a little bit shakey and you seemed very fidgety. I could tell you were passionate about the topic and it kept me interested.

Katelyn- I loved your speech. You kept me interested the entire time and made me laugh. I learned so much and the way you present the speech is always so entertaining. You have improved so much and it doesn't even seem like you're nervous. This was definitely one of my favorites!

  10. Curtis P. - Your speech I think was the best! I loved your enthusiasm from the start and I loved how to kept it going throughout your whole speech. That is really hard to do but you did it along with knowing your facts and information very good. I liked learning about the different topping that are used for pizzas especially the nasty one with the squids. Ewwwww! Your volume and rate was good also because you were speaking at a rate where we could all understand you. You had me interested from the start and I think your intro and conclusion were both really good. In conclusion, you are one of the best speakers in our class and you definitely demonstrated that with this speech!

    1. Megan - I really liked your speech. I've heard a lot about The Beatles, but never the information that you were able to give. I liked how you talked about the meaning behind some of their songs and even played some of your favorites because I honestly never gave them a try but the songs that you played were really nice. I thought that you looked really calm and relaxed about your speech like always. You eye contact was good but I think you could have used a couple more hand gestures which is something we have all been forgetting about. Your intro and conclusion were also really strong. In conclusion, after hearing your speech I am interested to hearing more Beatles music!

  11. I think that this was my best speech so far. My introduction could have used a little more connection, but I do think that I used a good mental aid that got the audience into the time that I was talking about. My visual aid, being my power point, went well other than one minor hiccup. I also think that the power point was a good option because if I brought in a few saxophones, they would take up some space and maybe cause a distraction. My conclusion definitely needs some work though. That is probably the part of my speeches that needs the most work. In all my speech went well and I really enjoy talking about the saxophone so I had a lot of fun doing this speech.

Kyle- I thought your speech went great as always. I could really connect to your speech because I am a baseball fan and love wearing hats. You used you visual aid very well and connected with us very well. I can speak for the people that aren't into sports though!

Taylor- I thought that you did your speech very well. You taught us about ear piercings very well using the diagram and terminology to help us understand. The only thing against it though was that I couldn't really connect to it that well. Its a hard subject for us guys to connect because we don't normally get our ears pierced and don't know much about it. My only criticism is if there was a way to connect to the guys a little more, that would be it. Other than that, you executed the speech very well and seemed to know your stuff. Great job!

  12. This was one of my favorite speeches because I got to share information about a topic that I find very interesting and important. I thought it was going to be difficult to talk about water for at least 6 minuets, but in the end I had to cut out a chunk of my speech because it was going to be over 10 minuets. I realize now how easy it is to go on and on about a topic that you are passionate about. Although I had fun with this speech, there are a few areas that I still need to improve on. The first being eye contact. I tried not to use a manuscript at first (felt very unorganized with just an outline) because I know that I would be too tempted to stare at the script instead of the audience. Next speech I will try to just use an outline or notes and hopefully make more eye contact. The next area I need to improve on is my flow. I messed up a few times and tried to go back and correct my mistake instead of moving on and just going with whatever I said even if it was wrong.

Haliey- I thought you did a really nice job. You picked a topic that you are very passionate about and that you have a connection with. Your connection and emotion with the topic intrigued me. When you got emotional you did a good job with moving on, although I know you think you didn't. my only suggestion for you is to not hold your manuscript in your hands so that everyone can see it. Other than that I thought you did a wonderful job and I can't wait to hear more from you.

Alexis- You had a great intro. Your story connected to the audience and really gave us an idea pf what you were going to talk about and why you are so affected by it. Your speech had a ton of interesting and important facts and your visual aid was perfectly disgusting. I think that you are one of the best when it comes to eye contact. You have a nice tone and pace to your voice that makes it easy to listen to. Your conclusion was lacking just a tad but other than that you were awesome!

  13. I thought my speech went very well. Although my eye contact was very bad and I lost my spot a few times. I also forgot to write a works cited page so that hurt my grade, but I feel like I did everything else very well. I thought it was funny when I accidentally broke the lobster.

Curtis- Your speech was pretty cool. I started getting hungry during your speech. You had great eye contact, you spoke clearly, and you connected with the audience talking about the different toppings on pizzas.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Megan- Again, great speech. You really connected with the audience by talking about the different songs and the stories behind them. I love that you chose a topic that you are so passionate about and you share that passion with everyone.

  15. My speech this time was anything but good. I feel like I would've done better if I put more time into it. I was fumbling over my words and wasn't prepared. I'm hoping the next speech goes well because i find myself to be a very persuasive person. I thing that I did well during this speech was eye contact. This was probably because I couldn't read what I had written down.

Curtis- I thought your speech was awesome. It may be just because I like food. I really enjoyed how energetic you were during your speech and you seemed to enjoy your topic.

Kelly- I loved your speech. Its not everyday a girl gets up and talks about Halo. You had great knowledge of the video game which really shocked me. I enjoyed your speech and how correct it was. Good use of information.

  16. I believe this speech was alright. I think My introduction was good, I really tried to hit all four points obviously. Although, I should have connected to the audience better. This was more of a tough topic to relate to everyone. My conclusion was okay, not as well done as my introduction. However my last statement was a better conclusive statement than in any of my other speeches. My visual aid was acceptable, but if I had thought harder I probably could have come up with a better one. For this speech I felt less nervous, and I think I made better eye contact. I'm not thinking about making gestures like I should, but overall I think I'm slowing improving my speeches.

Cyrus - I really enjoyed your speech. I think Black Holes would be a hard topic to find new extraordinary information on, yet I was still very interested. I think you related to the audience as well as you could and you did a great job!

Hailey- I think you did a great job as well. Your speech was really interesting, and a lot of people don't know the specifics about that disorder so it was good to be informed. Even though you got emotional, you still tried hard to keep the speech moving, and I still enjoyed listening to what you had to talk about.

  17. This speech was a lot of fun to prepare. It may not have been my best overall speech, but I did have the most fun preparing for this one because I was able to learn so much about hats. My intro was about as good as I think it could be. I know this is a topic that not everyone is a big fan of, but I know that I did my best to relate it to everyone. There is always an added pressure of going first, espically because then you are the example. I believe my visual aide was fun to follow along with and interresting. Finally, my conclusion would have been a lot better if I would have actually read all of it. I accidentially skipped my note card too far, so I read my intro for the first part and that hurt me.

Kellie- Awesome! This was my favorite speech of yours, simply for the fact that you totally stepped outside the box on this one. I am sure that I would not have picked this as my topic because of fear that it would much too difficult. You pulled this off so effortlessly! I really enjoyed the visual aides and the introduction was great!

Curtis- I am not sure, but do you happen to like pizza? This was a whole new side of you I have not seen before! You were glowing with energy and excitement, like a little kid at a pizza buffet! This speech was so much fun to listen to and it was nice to finally learn the real history of pizza!

  18. Going into this speech I knew a lot of people didn't give a flying fig about the Beatles or their music, that being said I think I did a pretty good job of keeping people interested. My passion definitely showed through and I would have it no other way on a speech like this. Next time, I will read the directions more carefully, because I thought the speech had to be under 10 minutes not under 8.. whoops. Also, next time I will probably choose a outline instead of a manuscript. I like having all my ideas down but when I lose my place I get frazzled and I think that shows through.

Kyle- I really liked your speech, I mean I could give a flying fart less about baseball caps but you made me interested, which is a talent in itself. You spoke clearly (as always) and seemed really rehearsed and knew what you were doing. I liked that you took us through a history and showed plenty of pictures. That always helped. I also liked how you added a bit of humor to it with that one team with the biscuits as the logo. You kept it light which I think really kept things moving.

Katelyn - Another topic I could give a crap less about! But you made me interested in water and why I should drink it. Your visual aid really helped, the only comment I have about the visual aid is that you showed how much a girl should drink in an average day but not a guy. I think showing both may have been better. I really liked your speech and as always your puns and cute little jokes made the speech even better and more intriguing.

  19. I think my speech went according to plan for the most part. The one thing that did surprise me was when I looked at the clock and realized I was in jeopardy of going past the time limit. Preparing for my speech I did struggle coming up with an introduction that I found proper and comfortable with. I was not completely happy with my introduction, but I felt that it meet the criteria so I stuck with it. I also had this same problem with constructing my visual aid. I choose a very basic power point presentation that I knew got done what was needed, but it was not as polished as I would of ultimately wanted. I could of done a better job creating something that was more then just a reference point of where I was in my presentation for myself. My conclusion was what I felt comfortable with. I felt I was able to connect the dots of past and present with it which was not done with my introduction.

Katelyn: I definitely found your presentation to be the best this time around. Typically I find myself bored and uninterested in any type of speech about health type topics, but you did a very good job to not cause that same result. You presented your information in a very interesting and entertaining way. You also used your visual aid to the maximum degree of usefulness in my opinion.

Kyle: I found your speech to be entertaining. Despite not caring about baseball you made your topic easy to connect to. It was certainly interesting to see the history of the baseball hat. I also thought you created and presented your power-point very nicely.

  20. I thought this was one of my worse speeches this year. I will be honest with you i was not well prepared because i wrote my speech on multiple planes and in airports during layovers. I was also very tired and not mentally prepared for this speech. I also felt that i was very monotone looking back on it. I think i had a lot of good facts and information, i just need to work on connecting with the audience. I think i finally stopped swaying.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Kellie- I thought your speech overall was very well written. I think that for some of the girls atleast were a little confused with all the different characters and story lines. I would almost say you needed to dumb it down a bit. But overall I thought it was great!

Cyrus- I loved your speech actually. I have always hated everything that had to do with space but learning about blackhole really interested me and i felt well connected. So great job. Your speeches are always good and I am always engaged in your speeches.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Katelyn- Like always your speech was amazing. You have this natural speaking voice, that keeps me interested. I love your little corny sayings they really make me happy. I thought that you gave plenty of great facts, and your speech had a very natural flow to it. If i might say.....you have a way with words.

  23. I thought my speech went pretty well but could have been much better with more preparation. I had good eye contact was enthusiastic when giving the speech. My power point did not go well though I had mistankingly put the slides in the wrong order plus it took me much more time then I wanted to turn the slide. Over all my speech went better than expected and was not very nervous.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Abbi- I thought you had a good opening to the speech with a typical morning when you were on the farm. You had good eye contact and looked like you wanted more time to prepare. You were organized and had good poise.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Kellie-Your speech was awesome maybe it was just because it was about Halo but I thought you were prepared and excited about giving it. You had good poise and seemed very confident giving your speech. It could have used something to tie in and connect everyone but everyone could see were you were coming from.

  26. I thought my speech went fairly well, even though i didn't really connect as well as i could have with the class. I was happy with the length of my speech which surprised me because it went a full minute longer than it did when i practiced. But, in short i was pretty pleased with my speech.

Kellie- I loved your speech! I though u did a fantastic job connecting with the audience and were very enthusiastic about your topic. Although from one "gamer " to another you were a bit too technical about the plot of the games for some people to understand. But, other than that great job!

Kyle- I thoroughly enjoyed your speech. I actually didn't know that much about baseball hats! You were enthusiastic and well prepared and very confident. I also liked the little jab you made about the cubs. Haha I bet that frustrated Mrs. Dennert. But, overall great job bro!

  27. From Chance:
My informative speech wasn't very good. I didn't really practice, or even do it in front of an adult. So I wasn't really prepared for this speech. Which was my fault for not practicing as much as I should of. But other than that, my eye contact was good. My tone was okay, but still a little off. Sounds like I'm crying. But I had a fun time looking information or researching on the baseball glove. In my mind it was very intriguing and interesting! I felt like an expert on my topic. I feel it was a good speech but I still have a lot to work on.

Katlyn: I really really enjoyed your speech. I felt well connected on your speech. Learning about water was also very intriguing. There were a lot of information I didn't know about water. That caught my attention.

Kyle: I also liked your speech a lot! I love baseball! Love it as ever one knows. The baseball hat has also gone through a lot of changes just like the baseball glove. It was very cool to learn about it. And I really enjoyed.

  28. Cutis: I felt that your speech was really well done. you made great eye contact, had a good structure to your speech and all the while you seemed so enthusiatic about your topic. I understand why you are so passionate about it, its because you are italian and also pizza is delicious i just wish you would have brought some in to share with the class.

Kyle- as usual kyle your speech was amazing. you are so good at giving speeches that i felt connected to your topic even though im not much of a baseball fan.I felt like i learned a thing or two from your speech. You made good eye contact and you always seem so calm about giving your speech which is something that i wish i could do. Plus your intro was really good too.

  29. I didnt do as well on this speech as I thought i was going to do, mainly because I kept on mispronounce words and losing my place when I would look up at the audience. With that being said I thought my eye contact was good although i think i could have done better with it. I thought I did good on my intro and that I made a connection to the audience. I am actually kinda glad I had to re-write this speech overall I thought I did a good job

  30. Nick- First of all i'd like to say that I thought the topic of your speech was very interesting and it really grabbed my attention. Your introduction was well done it was strong and entertaining and you used a lot of emotion and it really seemed like your were enthusiastic about your topic. Overall I think it was your best introduction so far. I thought your whole speech was strong and it seemed well practiced you really cut back on your ums this time. The weakest part of your speech I think was your conclusion because it seemed slightly abrupt but i still thought it was pretty good. In conclusion, I think this was your best speech so far nice job.

  31. Nick B- I thought your speech was interesting and was pretty good but it seemed a little unprepared for. It seemed to me that you were very interested in your topic which really helped grab my attention. Also I enjoyed that it seemed like you had a lot of random facts that a lot of people wouldn't know. Your speech seemed a little unpracticed and you took a lot of short pauses when you looked at your paper. Also you didn't have a lot of enthusiasm in your voice. Overall decent speech nice job.

  32. chance- I thought you speech was well done but could have had a little more info. I really liked how you show why the glove was needed and why it had to be invented. You were very thorough in your information about the specifics of gloves. I think it was interesting how their were so many glove types i think most people including myself didn't know their was that many. It seemed like you practiced your speech a lot before hand and as the speech progressed it seemed like you got more and more comfortable. Overall good speech.

  33. This was another enjoyable speech for me. It was easy to write and also to give. The ability to use a presentation made me feel very comfortable. Being so comfortable, i feel that I spoke very confidently although I may have spoke a little too fast in some hard to explain sections.

Kellie - Nice topic! Im Sure everyone was listening when you told us your were informing us about a videogame. I could tell that you were actually excited to talk to us about it. You spoke with a good rate, and it was enjoyable to listen to. The only problem with your speech is that im sure it didn’t connect as well with other people as it did with a long term halo fan like me.

Nick K. - Fun intro! You picked a very interesting topic, I actually cared about what you had to say. Your transitions were very smooth, made a lot of sense, and kept me from getting lost. I could tell that at some points you were trying to make some gestures but I couldn’t really tell because you were too close to the camera. Overall you gave an interesting and entertaining speech.

I enjoyed this speech because it was somewhat personal to me and I related to it very well! Due to the longer time limit, I sometimes stumbled a bit on words but I believe that I did okay! For this speech, I chose to write an outline because it allowed me to mix things up a little bit. Also, for me, using an outline makes it easier to maintain good eye contact with the audience. I changed my topic for this speech sort of last minute but I felt that it was for the best because with this topic, I could properly inform the audience of what I believed. Overall, I think I spoke decently and delivered this speech acceptably.
