Impromptu Speech

Please reflect on your impromptu speech by writing one well-written and thought-out paragraph. Use complete sentences and correct grammar. Upper classmen should be writing paragraphs with compound and complex sentences that are a minimum of six sentences long. Things to consider (you do not need to include all of them)

  1. eye contact
  2. nervousness
  3. audience feedback
  4. preparation (What did you do during your 2 minutes--would you do the same thing? Do you have advice for future impromptu speakers?)
  5. Speaking Rate (too fast? too slow? too many pauses?)
  6. gestures (Did you do any?)
  7. poise and presence
  8. confidence level
  9. introduction and conclusion
  10. organization
  11. facial expressions

What went well? What do you need to work on for the next speech? Would you want to try it again or are you glad it is done? Be as specific as possible!

In addition, leave feedback for at least two students. Feedback should be specific and original

    1. John, your story was really funny. It's like you had a real run of bad luck or something. It had a happy ending though and I can see why for you it was really the best trip ever.

    2. 3. John you always amaze me when you go up to give a speech. You're so calm and collected and very natural about everything you are talking about. You pause near perfectly and you just look comfortable up there. Good job!

    4. John, it's cool that you have all these stories to share from your own personal experiences. You're a natural speaker and make good eye contact with the class. You never seem nervous up there and always keep composure. Nice work!

  3. For the preparation for this speech I just wrote down some random things around my room, to justify my random tangents. There is not too much to do to prepare, only just think ahead of where you will go after each point. After my speech I felt like I was rambling on, trying to surpass the ninety-second mark. For my gestures, do to the nervousness in my body, my hands wanted to preform a sacred voodoo ritual in where my hands are one. I had no solid topic, just a bunch of small topics according to my room. In conclusion, I had no conclusion and I like to smile.

    1. Alex you gotta give yourself some more credit. You didn't have too much time time to prepare, that was the whole point of the speech. You did good though. The way you justified your random tangents was actually a really good strategy. "sacred voodoo ritual"?

    2. Alex, i liked how you got a whole speech out of a simple question. It was interesting to learn more about you, despite it being a little bit of an odd question. You had my attention the whole time and found it very entertaining. Nice job!

    3. You expanded very well for a topic that was so simple. It was fun learning something new about you and you made me feel like i was right there in your room with you. You had good pauses and a generally good pace. nice job

    4. Alex I enjoyed your speech. It was impressive how you could expand upon such a broad question and we got to know you a little better. You were good at engaging the class and had us all laughing with you.

  5. I think I did really well. It was kinda uncomfortable to be laughing, but nobody else was except Claire who was cracking up in the back-round. I made good eye contact, but I was still nervous and awkward. I think I still need to work on getting the butterflies on my stomach. I also need to work on my jokes and train of thought as well because I was kinda all over the place.

    1. Swell job, you seemed confident with your speech. If you feel like you have butterflies in your stomach I would consider talking to a doctor. Overall, solid speech and keep your chin up.

    2. I was chuckling to myself Peter, and I enjoyed the passion you put into speaking. Keep up the good work.

  6. My impromptu speech was not my best speech. My topic on what I would change if I was principle did not challenge me as a speaker. The speech was short on time, basic, and being blunt almost boring. I tried to relate to all parts of my audience, and get the audience a little involved to keep things alive, but my impromptu speech did not live up to the same energy as my previous speeches. I made solid eye contact, but again I struggled to look all around the classroom. My hand gestures were average, but nothing memorable. I also used filler words a few times.

Carlitos: You had a friendly smile and some good hand gestures, but you still stuttered and repeated yourself quite a bit. Sometimes it was hard to hear you, but the more time that passed the easier
it was to hear you. You had alright eye contact, but you did a good job engaging the audience.

John: You had a lively energetic speech about your trip to Jamaica. You seemed really comfortable and confident in front of everyone. There were a few times where it seemed like you were repeating the same information in a different way, and you did keep using the same words again and again. But you had great eye contact and good hand gestures.

PJ: You seemed a little nervous during your speech, and your movie review of Horrible Bosses 2 was somewhat confusing. You used a lot of filler words, but you did a great job with eye contact.

Daniel: You had a great introduction, and for the most part good eye contact. However, it seemed you were a little nervous as you were fidgety. You did a good job staying on topic and explaining why you want to be Steve Jobs. You also made a good joke about Samsung.

  7. I felt nervous, but each speech I do, I seem to get more and more comfrotable. This time around, I felt my eye contact was not as good, but I felt like I was not repeating myself too much. I would say this is the best speech I've done yet.

John: You are just a naturally good speaker who can easily make things interesting because you seem so comfortable, and know what you aare talking about. I felt like you weren't talking to a crowd, but just speaking to friends or a person on the daily basis and thats what I loved about your speech.

Alex: I loved your speech and felt like I learned something new about you. You seemed really comfortable about being up in front of everyone, and your eye contact and gestures were really good.

Hailey: Although your speech was a little short, you seemed passionate about what you were talking about. I liked how I learned more about you, and I like the fact that you would pick Brittany Spears out of everyone cause she's pretty cool!

    1. First of all, thank youu. Second of all, i agree with your point about confidence. I can tell you are getting more and more comfortable up at the podium. I feel if you keep working at it you will become a great public speaker.

    2. Being comfortable while speaking in front of a group of people is hard, but you do a pretty good job. You could use some more annunciation and pace, but you did well.

  8. For my first impromptu speech, i felt it went better than i planned. I felt more confident than usual just because it was spur of the moment and i was not able to practice the night before and overthink it too much. Some things i need to work on are eye contact, and length. I need to take better notes and learn how to speak a little more and make the time longer.

  9. My impromptu speech went better than I thought it was going to go. The topic I chose was a little hard to elaborate on, but I think I made light of the situation. I definitely stuttered a little bit. But I made up for that by covering it with good pace and pausing. So far this semester, I'd have to say this was my weakest speech.

    1. Sometimes in life you have hard situations, speech might my one of those situations. As I see it, you need to brush off the dust and keep moving forward. (By no means am I a professional talker.) Overall swell job and continue to fine-tune your weak areas.

  10. The impromptu speech was I could say one of my better speeches not the best but better than my last ones I have already done. I felt more confident and I tried to look around but got nervous when I was looking around. I didn't feel that I did the right topic as I started talking about it I felt I was connected to the topic but not a lot I had an ok intro but not the best conclusion is what I really need to work on is how to end the speech. I know for next time to write down a couple of things before I go up there cause I know it would of helped me in the long run but, all together I don't think it was that bad of a speech.

  11. This speech was definitely not my best, I was very nervous and did not react well under the pressure. I felt awkward being filmed and my performance reflected that. I spoke quickly because I was nervous, and did not maintain eye contact with the class. I had somewhat of an Introduction but my ending was sloppy, there was no real conclusion. I did not use any gestures and my thoughts were not very organized. My poise and presence were not there, and I did not feel confident in how I was doing. Lastly, I didn't use my two minutes of prep time to my advantage. A suggestion I would make to future impromptu speakers is to take advantage of that time, write out your ideas and organize your thoughts the best you can.

    1. Marissa, I thought your speech was alright. You got your point across, were easy to understand, and had a good pace. You just really have to focus on making eye contact with people and not worrying about the camera; just have faith in yourself that you can do this!

  12. I really liked this speech. It tested my ability as a speaker, but it also let me just be myself with a topic. I loved my topic and I think I did a pretty good job with it. I'm not good with pauses and my pace varies widely but I enjoyed this speech.

    1. Matt, I thought your speech was really good. It was awesome that you picked a topic you were so passionate about, it really showed. I liked that you were really conversational and easy to understand. You did use filler words like 'ummm..' a bit but most of us do that and it will get better with more practice.

Bremmer I thought your speach sounded very confident, in your speaking. It was very clear that you have thought about your topic at least a little bit befor this speach. The way you presented yoru speach made it like you were talking with every one instead of lecturing them on something or talking to them, I dont know if thatts a good thing but it kept me interested in your speach. I think that your volume was consistent and good, I personaly would have been louder but I think im just loud in general. Overalls I that i just lost my train of thought compleatly in every way possible... IT WAS GOOD SPEACH

    3. It seemed like you really did like this speech. You could just talk about what you wanted and you could go on a rant if you even wanted to. These speeches are my favorite types because this is how I would give speeches in the past. But you did a good job on it.

  13. i felt my impromtu speech wasnt as good as i thought it was going to be i went in knowin gi was going to talk about my adventure with my brother but i couldnt find a good way to end the speech. I felt my eye contac could have been a litle bit better as well.

liz- i liked your speech i thought you had some good ideas but just needed a btter way of phrasing them. overal i thought you speech wes good although your eye contact could have been better and keep up all the good speeches.

PJ i loved your speech pj becasue i loved the first horrible bosses and ic seen it like 10 times but i didnt like that you had so many spoilers because i was planning on seeing that movie sometime soon but overall i thought your speech was weel done

    1. Impromptu speeches are pretty fun, and I think that you did a pretty good job with keeping things in order and not trailing off. Some people are good at it and some are not. Maybe if you could get a bit more info into your speeches like go into a little bit more detail or something. Over all though it was a good speech.

  14. I thought my impromptu was alright. I tried to make eye contact with a lot of the class but didn't really focus on my hand gestures. I think my speech was pretty disorganized but that's probably just due to the fact that it was impromptu. I do wish I had written down more notes before going up there to keep my thoughts organized.

  15. Steven Kelly is really Steven Kelly undercover.
Being my first impromptu speach, I thought it was going to be really difficult and scary but was not as bad as I thought it would be. While i was talking i was very easly distracted by other thoughts floating around in my head so i never got to talk much about what i was planning on during the speach. Eye contact is something that i keep forgeting to do, I sort of stare off into space at the wall in the sort of middle of the room. Being organized was something that just did not happen during my speach I was just all over the place. I also dont think that my intro or conclusion was very strong, I dont think that my conclusion had anything to do with the intro or was much of a summery.

  16. My impromptu speech was a little iffy. I tried to make eye contact and speak clearly but then I forgot what I was going to say most of the time, This caused me to get really nervous and start rambling and shaking. I wish I would have written more down because I kept absolutely blanking while I was up there.

Hailey: your speeches are generally really good. Of course this one was a little different because you didn't get to practice it, and there was not a lot of preparation time. You did pretty well with eye contact and speech content. Keep up the good work homie.

Jon: I always enjoy watching your speeches because they always interest me. There's something about your voice and how you carry yourself that is just intriguing. As far as the speech went, you made decent eye contact I thought and you seemed natural up there talking about your topic.

  17. This is just a bit late, but I feel the most comfortable winging speeches for some reason. When I write one down i can not stick to what I wrote at all. I will almost always change what I say every time I practice it, and then use a completely different worded speech all together. I liked this one only because I felt the most comfortable.
