News Article Speech

Please reflect on your news article speech by writing one well-written and thought-out paragraph. Use complete sentences and correct grammar. Upper classmen should be writing paragraphs with compound and complex sentences that are a minimum of six sentences long. Things to consider (you do not need to include all of them)

  • eye contact
  • nervousness
  • audience feedback
  • preparation (enough? not enough? What will you change for next time?)
  • voice (rate, variation)
  • gestures (How did they go? How did you feel?)
  • poise
  • confidence level
  • introduction and conclusion
  • organization
  • facial expressions

What went well? What do you need to work on? Be as specific as possible!

If you were recorded, please watch your YouTube video and use that in your reflection as well.

In addition, leave feedback for at least two students. Feedback should be specific and original. Please leave feedback under that student's reflection if possible.

  1. I feel I did fairly well on this speech. I think I did a good job preparing, but I feel the start of my introduction was week and slow. I stuttered just a little bit for while because I was trying not to laugh. My eye contact was alright. I didn't read straight from the outline, but I only made eye contact with a couple of people and really didnt look around the classroom and didnt make great eye contact with those on the left and right sides of the classroom. My gestures were on point in my opinion which is a good thing. Overall, I think well and was really comfortable.

    1. I think that you had a really good speech, and you always have a really weird ice breaker. Your dinosaur ice breaker was pretty unexpected but it was pretty funny. The fact that you could keep going with dinosaur arms, but you did it. You had a pretty good pace, and good eye contact. Maybe the dino arms held you back with more gestures but oh well. Good speech.

    2. Jon I think you did a great job with your second speech i loved your intro and your pace and eye contact was also very good I am also looking forward to your next speech, great job

    3. I have been friends with you since freshmen year, but you never cease to amaze me Jon. You are never normal and that gets a light atmosphere for your speech, but you still stutter and use filler words too much. Overall it was very conversational and well organized.

    4. I really liked your speech it was something different and you brought a new spin at in a way I never would never thought of. You seemed really confident when you where up there and had very good eye contact not so good with the hand gestures but overall you did really good with your speech.

    5. I LOVED THE DINO GESTURE! HILARIOUS!

    6. Jon i thought your speech was good you had good eye contact and went up there feeling confident. My favorite part of your speech was your dinosaur impression, although it was kinda akward when you continued to do the rest of the speech with your arms in your shirts arm holes

  2. Jon you did really good in your speech. You weren't nervous at all. You also really got into the speech when you only had a little experience to go on which in my opinion is really cool.

  3. I think my speech was ok. I was really nervous, and I didn't have much experience to go on either. I didn't really prepare much either which was a big mistake. I also forgot to print my speech, and even forgot that I was going the very next day! I did however make a lot of eye contact, and I stood tall. I had a introduction and a conclusion, and my thoughts were organized as well. Overall I think it was an ok speech, but I could definitely do better. I also should pay attention and practice more as well.

    1. Peter I thought you did a good job. You made a lot of eye contact and payed attention to your posture. I could tell you were nervous, so was I delivering my speech. I've found that practicing the golden number of 3-6 times really does do the trick.

    2. Peter, when you were speaking although it wasn't well organized, when you hit the points you did you commanded the room like a true actor and speaker. As long as you fine tune the rest of it, this semester will be very beneficial to you

    3. Peter, you did a great job giving background information and were passionate about what you were speaking on. However, your eye contact was lacking because you were reading straight from the outline. You had a steady pace and a good flow. You had a great volume and nice steady tone.

    1. you looked might jolly, i second your thought on how you did overall. Your topic was strong, and you stuck with it. As they all say, practice makes perfect. Unless you over practice, then its not perfect.

    2. I think you are improving very well. You did very well and had my ettention the whole time. I agree with you on making eye contact and a good pace. Good speech!

  6. Jon, I think you did very well on this speech. The connection you made with one of your dad's sayings to how the mayor dressed felt genuine. You maintained good eye contact with the class and your speech was enjoyable to listen to.

  7. This was not my best speech. I did not relate well to my article topic, and could have made more use of the attention grabber from my introduction. I was very nervous, and that showed in my performance. I did not maintain much poise, probably looked uncomfortable, and stuttered quite a bit. This may not have been my best speech, I know there is plenty of room for improvement and I plan on doing a lot more practicing next time.

    1. Although you may not have connected to it, you did a good job relating it to a subject that almost everyone can relate to. You command the room, in a very unique way. You have great diction and annunciation. Keep up the good work!

    2. Yoyr confidence level from your first to your second speech is tremendous. Theres still a little room for improvement, but you are well on your way and i am excited to see where you are going with this class.

  8. So I have definitely gotten better at presenting and organization, but I still feel as if I am boring the audience and not keeping the topic interesting. I paused more and had better eye contact, but next time I think I will take up my water just to give me more confidence and force me to take natural breaks.

    1. I thought you did really good on your speech your gestures were pretty good and I felt in tuned to what you where talking about and you had very good eye contact with the class. I did notice though that it looked like you where holding your hands I don't know if that was cause your nerves but you did a good job never less.

    2. I think you were very confident and very poised up there you didn't bore me at all I thought you went at a pretty good pace a little fast but not horrible I liked your speech and keep up the good work

  10. This news article speech was not my best and I feel like I did so bad that when I was up their I was telling myself I could't do it. My eye contact, poise, gestures, and voice very not well put together. Next I know that I need to be better prepared as to practice reading out my speech so I can improve before I go up their for the next time. I know I was prepared because when I lost when I was talking in front of the class and need to better organize like highlight the words so I know what points I already made.

    1. Hang in there bud! I think even if this speech may have been rough for you, just use it as a learning experience to do better next time. You need to just tell yourself that you can do it and it will help your confidence grow. I think it was good that you related to your article and made it personal and think sometimes that can be more important than eye contact and gestures because at least it made it interesting and relatable.

    2. I think you're speech overall went pretty good. I think you just need to believe in yourself and you will improve by miles!! Overall good job!

  11. My speech was definitely not a good one, I was really off course with where I wanted to go and also i took out a lot of info so I cut out a lot of time. It was not the best article to talk about and it was not a very easy one but I wanted to make it a lot better than what I did because I made a bad speech.

    1. Degrading your self is never a good thing, look for the positives. So what if you had an easy topic, that gave you the opportunity to work on the small aspects of the speech. Like water, you are majestic. Not to be creepy, at all... Overall the "bad speech" turned out swell.

    2. I really don't think you did as bad as you think you did you took a tough article and turned it into a halfway decent speech I think that your pace was good and you used pauses very well also overall not bad

  12. Litos - I do not think that you were prepared to go the day you had to go. You were counting on going Friday, but instead had to go Thursday and that is what really screwed you up. It was a good speech for being done with most likely no practice. Too bad you could not go on Friday like you planned

  13. To start of, during my practice runs for this speech I timed myself and got times from two minutes, to three minutes. I thought on the day of my speech I was going to be swell on time, but in the end, I felt rushed. I should of waited till the next day to present rather than doing the speech on Thursday. Being short on time, in my opinion, does not affect me. I said what was needed to be said. For some reason eye contact is a slight problem with me, I feel like is a blur when I look to the crowd then down to my paper. I feel like I am swimming with the sharks on this speech, yet still belong on the imaginary island.
P.S. What is the point of life, if you cannot have some fun? I do not know if this appropriate but as a great man once said, “Life’s too short, make the most of it.”

    1. I think your speech went well. I think you just need to get over the mental part of it all and not psych yourself out. I think you had a good intro and conclusion and it was obvious when your speech was done. I also think the eye contact might improve if you depend less on your paper and more on what you are trying to say to everyone. I also think many of us can relate to feeling like "swimming with the sharks" when speaking, at least I do. In conclusion, I think it's pretty obvious that you are nervous but also really shows how great it is that you always push through that and keep talking and get your points across.

    2. I feel like i definitely had the same problem mi amigo. I have issues making eye contact with the audience and I feel like they judge everything I say so critically. I thought you did well and you definitely said what needed to be said.

    3. Although it was short I did like your speech as a whole you did seemed rushed most likely because of the short time you had but you looked confident and other than that you did a good job

  14. I think my speech went alright. I wasn't as nervous as my first speech and felt like I could be more conversational. I also never practiced which made me feel a lot more disorganized and may have been part of why I talked a bit faster and rambled at some points. I watched my video and felt that some of my gestures seemed forced, which is probably because they were but I'm going to work on using more gestures and making them seem more natural.

    1. Rachel, your eye contact was great and you had good consisent gestures. You did a great job relating the topic to the audenience. You did check your outline quite a bit, but you did a great job looking at the issue from all points of view.

  15. I thought you did really well! I guess one of the solutions to stage fright as they say is being prepared. You said yourself that you didn't practice too much and I think that would help! I do the same thing though and i'll talk faster or end up forgetting what i'm supposed to say.

  16. I didn't do as well as i would have liked in this speech. I actually felt more nervous for this speech than the first one, even though i prepared more for this one. I thought my gestures seemed natural, but I forgot what i was going to say, which resulted in me having a short speech. I had issues making eye contact along with confidence up on the podium.

    1. Aaron, I think that the nerves did get to you a little bit, but once you got into the flow and calmed down, you regained composure and finished your speech off well. Your eye contact was very good, as well as your posture and voice.

I think that you were just a little quiet and it just kind of seamed that you phyced yourself out befor the speach.you had the eye contact and you didn't make the speach boring

    2. Claire, yours went pretty good. I think you managed your nerves pretty well. You used pauses and spoke very clearly. Good job. :)

  19. Carlitos, you seemed extremely nervous and unprepared. You often stuttered and repeated yourself. You did have a consistent volume and pace. You seemed interested in your subject, but not truly passionate. You did have great eye contact for the most part, but you read off the outline quite a bit. You seemed to relax more the further you went along.

  20. Carlitos- i thought your speech could have been a little bit better if you would have been better prepared and then your speech wouldnt ahve seen so choppy. Eye contact is another thing to work on, try to speak to individuals not just look around the room

  21. Steven Kelly is me.

I think that I was lacking in gestures, also to practice my speach more so I know what is coming up next in my speech. I also think that my pronounceation needs work. Saying the word umm is also something that needs work as well

  22. my news article speech went a little better than i planned. I practiced a little more than last time but did not go over it too much. I tried doing a lot of h for this so i knew what i was talking anout. Some things i need to work on are my gestures. I did awful on my gestures and they will for sure be something i will be working on improving for future speeches.

  23. My speech went okay at best. I was stumbling quite a bit. Alot more than usual actually. I kept the audience involved by telling some jokes. And that helped me get back on track a little bit. The topic I chose wasn't the easiest to talk about, but I think I made light of my situation, and dragged a pretty decent speech out of it.
