News Article Speech

Please reflect on your news article speech by writing one well-written and thought-out paragraph. Use complete sentences and correct grammar. Upper classmen should be writing paragraphs with compound and complex sentences that are a minimum of six sentences long. Things to consider (you do not need to include all of them)
  • Eye Contact
  • Nervousness
  • Audience Feedback
  • Preparation
  • Voice (Rate/Volume/Variation)
  • Gestures (How did they go? How did you feel?)
  • Poise
  • Confidence Level
  • Introduction and Conclusion
  • Organization
  • Facial Expressions

What went well? What do you need to work on? Be as specific as possible!

If you were recorded, please watch your YouTube video and use that in your reflection as well.

In addition, leave feedback for at least two students. Feedback should be specific and original. Please leave feedback under that student's reflection if possible.

  1. I thought that this speech went a little bit better than the first one. I felt more comfortable from the beginning and I knew what I wanted to say. I was still a little bit nervous, but that was mostly because I was giving the first speech. Next time, I think I need to look around the room a little bit more. Overall, I'm satisfied with how it went and hope that I can keep improving.

    1. At the turn of the semester when we started Speech class, I bet the last thing you wanted to do was give the first speech. You rocked it man. Your body language was great and your tones were so good. You made it feel serious just by your tone of voice. You are right, my one criticism is to look at your audience more. Besides that, I think you gave a very admirable speech, great job!

    2. Henry, I really enjoyed your speech. The use of transitions were perfect, and it helped to keep your speech flowing. Also, I liked your hand gestures it helped to add more to your speech. All I would say is that next time try adding more eye contact. I am really excited to hear your next speech!

  2. I am content with how my speech went. I felt that I kept the audience engaged and they seemed to enjoy it. I felt that my speed was a little too fast and I had some instances I stumbled over my words. I went a little out of my comfort zone with the singing aspect. I think it added a lot to my speech and that it was a good addition to catch peoples attention and keep them interested. My eye contact in my opinion was pretty solid but I felt that I was pacing and fixing my sleeve too much. Either way I enjoyed it and I hope you did too.

    1. Zack, I really enjoyed your speech. I really liked how you went out of your comfort zone for your intro and conclusion. I thought that the use of humor in your speech made it even more fun to listen to. The one thing I would say is to try and speak a little slower. Your speeches continue to impress me. I am really excited for your next speech.

    3. Right from the beginning of your speech the class could tell you were confident and well prepared. Your intro was very funny and it caught everyone's attention. Throughout your speech you made good eye contact and displayed appropriate gestures. One thing you can improve is talking a little bit slower but other then that it was great!

    4. I really enjoyed your speech. I could tell that you were confident and prepared. Starting and ending with a song was a good way to get the audience's attention and then restate what your speech was about. You are a good speaker and are always very animated, which makes you fun to listen to. My only critique is that I think you spoke a little fast. Overall, very nicely done!

    5. Zack, dude that intro and conclusion was probably one of the best we will have all year. Also I thought that you did a great job of keeping your audiences attention and keeping them in your speech. I'm pretty sure you stepped well outside of your comfort zone and I think that really let you let loose and have a little fun with this speech. I just hope that you got better speeches to come, keep it going Zack!

    6. Zack, your speech was really good. I loved your intro. Coming out with singing a modified version of "saints come marching in" was very cool. Your eye contact and gestures were very good. I think the only thing, is you sometimes speak a little to fast. Otherwise your speech was really good. Can not wait for your next one.

    7. Zack, I really liked your speech. In fact I think all of your speeches are amazing. You were really confident when you were on the stage, I thought you weren’t nervous at all. You can always make a topic interesting and alive. I like your songs at the beginning and the end, they were awesome and creative. I also like your joke about the ditch.

  3. I am really happy with the way my speech turned out. I´m gonna be totally honest here, I actually was REALLY nervous at first, I really did not feel prepared, even though I went through it like 5 times I still felt i wasn´t doing good enough. Also I was really worried about the audience reaction when I started telling my introductory story, I was worried some people could take it offensive or not find it funny at all, which was really getting me. But when I started the speech and I mentioned about "The Grandpa" and all about the cotton candy drink and other stuff and the audience laughed at it just gave me a LOT of confidence and i handled the speech really well, at least thats what I think so.

Without much to add, thank you.

    3. Pablo, this was definitely a side of you that I did not expect. Making your speeches personable and real life is an awesome characteristic. I have to agree with Grace in saying your speech was the funniest one I heard. You have a great way of connecting with your audience and making the speech memorable. The only comment I have for you is to make sure that you do not drag your speeches on for too long. Your great introduction kept everyone hooked for the entire thing, but maybe you wont connect so well in another speech. Sometimes it is best to limit how much you speak and let the audience fill in the blanks, very well done!

    4. Pablo! I thoroughly enjoyed your speech! Your introduction was a very funny, which I think helped you get rolling on your speech. I honestly could not tell that you were nervous- so props to you for hiding it well! Even though your speech was a little long, I did not notice it at all because you had me hooked on. I would say that you could work on eye contact a little more. Other than that- nice job!

    5. Pablo, did not see that coming. The story might have been long but I feel like it was necessary because of the topic you had. You did a great job of tying together your story with your article and getting the point across. And you looked very confident up there telling this story which probably most of us wouldn't want to tell. And next time you go back to Venezuela, take me with you!!!

    6. Pablo, loved your intro your intro. It was very funny. I know it was long but it did not lose my attention. I think just do not continue having really long speeches. Might lose some classmates attention You did a good job making eye contact. Maybe try to do it a little more. Your gestures were also very good. I really enjoyed your speech and cannot wait to hear you give another one.

  4. I thought my speech went well. I felt like my introduction was very good. After my introduction, I do not think the rest of my speech went as smoothly. I did not make as much eye contact as I did before. I think my confidence also dropped down which then affected my poise. I think my gestures were pretty good. One of them was a little weak but I think my gestures will get better as I do more speeches. I think this speech went better then my first one and I think they will just keep getting better.

    1. Josh, I also think that your speech went well. And I agree with you in saying that you just need confidence in yourself. I feel like once you get confident in yourself you are going to be a much better speaker than you ever thought you would be. With that your eye contact will get better, your gestures will be better, and you will just feel better about yourself. This is only our second speech so there are going to be mistakes everyone makes them you just got to learn from it and you gonna be a great speaker.

    2. Josh, you have definitely made improvements since the beginning of the semester. I think you were more confident in this speech compared to the first one. There is still room for improvement such as eye contact like you mentioned. Overall, it was pretty good and interesting to listen to, good job.

    3. Josh, Congrats. You definitely improved a lot since the first speech. Keep up the good work. I know you can do better than this, just practice more and get more details in your speech. You will do great. Well Done, Josh.

  5. I am so happy that everyone did a good job. Personally, I thought this speech was better than first time. For this speech that I learned much information about the Loveland Valentine remailing program and I very much enjoy it. I did not make as much eye contact and I knew my pronunciation was not very clear, anyway I tried to do the gestures. Moreover,I will try to say some interesting things and enthusiastic next time.

    1. Vicky, I thought that you were very well prepared for your speech and I was impressed how much you knew about your topic. It probably required a lot of preparation which is great for learning your speech and becoming more confident. I noticed that you had a little trouble with eye contact and enthusiasm also, but those things will come as you give more speeches. I hope you continue to improve and am excited to hear your future speeches.

    2. Vicky, I think this speech of yours is much better than the first one. I can see you have put a lot of effort in it. Your voice was much better this time, with more confidence and less hesitation. You really worked on your accent, your Chinese accent is not very heavy this time. You were really calm on the stage and you spoke really loud and clear. Overall, your speech this time was awesome!

  6. I think my speech overall was pretty good. I prepared a lot more than my last speech, so I was more confident than last time. I definitely feel that my rate was better than last time. I also feel like I did a pretty good job making eye contact, though I know I can still improve more. I feel like my organization was better this time as were my transitions. I definitely need to work on my facial expressions and the tone of my voice.

  7. I believe my speech went better than it should have been. I finished the night before and I didn't practice my speech at all. I volunteered myself so that Nathan would have more time and I could get my speech done. I know I didn't use as much gestures and eye contact as I should've. If I would've practiced I think I would've done a lot better. I wasn't that nervous, I think its because Im getting more confident in my speeches but I did have a very dry mouth when I finished. Because of my preparation, I believe that my organization, my eye contact, and my gestures weren't as well as they could have been.

    1. Your speech was amazing as it was and was even better considering you hadn't practiced at all. Your eye contact and gestures weren't actually that bad. The gestures flowed and it seemed like just something you naturally did. You are definitely and noticeably more confident than your first speech and you will have an amazing impromptu speech. For the dry mouth I just suggest drinking water right before, somewhere where there is a natural break or where you want something to sink in, and then immediately after. This has usually helped me for dry mouth in the past.

  8. This speech went quite a bit better for me this time around. It was still over the time limit, so I know I need to especially work on that when I practice. I believe the problem is that I go too fast in my practicing and then slow it down a little during my speech. I feel like my gestures were pretty good as well as my story. I do need to work on my attention grabber and on my transitions quite a bit more though. I also wish to thank Jacob for taking my place after my misunderstanding with when I was going!

    1. Nathan, I love the stories you tell. It was interesting that you had a story to share that related to your topic. Even though you really didn't tie everything together in the end, and went a little long at your speech, I believe you did a great job still.

    2. Nathan, I really enjoyed the story you told in the beginning of your speech. I think that you did a good job relaying the story even though you weren't there. You had enough details to appear as though you were. I also think that even though you went a bit over on time, you had a good pace to the speech. I think that you have good eye contact with the audience. I also would agree with you that some transitions could be extremely helpful with your speech.

  9. Overall this was a creative speech to write! It was hard to plan a speech around a very short news article, but it was a fun challenge. This speech didn't go as good as I wanted it too. 11. Overall, I think I did better on this speech than the first one. It was definitely challenging to me to prepare a 3 min speech based on a short news article that we have been given. However, I think I did really well explaning and expressing my own thoughts during the speech. After looking at my video, I think that I need to practice more so that I will not be so nervous, cause I was staring at my paper for the most of time. Also I was speaking a little too fast. Therefore, I still have a lot of things need to be improved. I have confidence in myself that I will be able present a even better speech on the next assignment.

  12. In my opinion I think this speech went better than the first one. I think that it was easier because I was presenting information rather than presenting myself in front of a bunch of strangers. Gun control a very touchy topic, but I think it gave me an advantage because it gave me more substance than just a one sentence story. Gestures were a little weird for me because I feel like if you really want it to look natural, you can't force it. I also know that my eye contact was worse this time. I think that for my next speech, I will take my glasses off ,which is what I normally do at dance competitions so that way I can't tell if people are really looking at me. I hope that doesn't count as cheating. However I do believe that it was easier to control my voice this time. Probably because I could stand behind my information, and I knew that I had to speak up because I was being recorded.

  14. Overall I think this speech is much better than my first speech. This speech was organized. I did a full preparation the night before the speech and I felt more prepared in front of the class. I made pretty good eye contact: I was looking around at the audience and I noticed they were also paying attention on me. I didn’t get much feedback on this speech because the topic I chose was a bit tragic, so I did most of the talking and the class was just listening. I think my introduction and conclusion was really good. I used a book to lead the audience’s thought into the topic and then mentioned it again in the conclusion, so the ending sounded more powerful. My voice is better this time. I didn’t sound very nervous or with a heavy Chinese accent. I need to keep working on memorizing my speeches. I did have to pause a few times and look at my paper. Next time I want to have my whole speech committed to memory so I can recite it by heart.

  15. I'm think I did improve from my last speech it might not have been by a lot but I think I still improved. I thought that I did make eye contact more but still not enough as I should have. I probably should practice on my pronunciation of words and make sure that I get the words out and make it clear what I'm trying to say. I didn't prepare as much for this speech as I did for the last one but I did think it felt better because I got the first speech under my belt and that made me a lot more comfortable to speak. If I practiced more with this speech I think it would have been great.

  17. I think that this speech didn't go as well as my first speech. I locked up in the middle of my speech and lost my train of thought. I think that having the outline on the sheet stressed me out and I felt like I was more concentrated on not forgetting things. I think that my eye contact in this speech was better as far as looking around the room. I also think that I did better, as far as speed and my gestures, than I did on my first speech. Overall, I think that the next speech i'm going to try and do my outline better and write down different words or phrases so I don't feel like I am going to forget.

    1. Overall I believe you are right about your first speech being better. However, I do believe that there were things that you did much better in this speech such as eye contact and you seemed a lot more confident up at the podium. Your speed and gestures were spot on and all you really seem to need to work on is having the sheet as reference instead of as your speech itself.

  18. I thought my speech was good overall. Some of the things I should have done is keep all of my ideas together and make sure I practice more. I was also very nervous about because i thought no one would really care about my topic and the other reason why I was nervous is that I hate talking about that day. But overall I thought my speech was alright. I just need more eye contact and my ideas and outline to be much better

  20. Overall I think this speech was decent. I could have done a better job at mixing the right facial expressions with what I was talking about but other than that it went pretty well. I feel like the audience was well involved and I feel like they understood. I could have slowed down a bit and made sure I was clear with the but other than that I am happy with the way it turned out.

I felt very accomplished with my outline because it detailed many strong points and arguments. If I would have practiced in front of a mirror or given an extra presentation and recorded it I would've been able to view and fix my presentation and give a great speech.
