1 Minute of Fame

What are you famous for doing? After your one minute of fame speech, reflect on it below. Write one well-written and thought-out paragraph. Use complete sentences and correct grammar. Upper classmen should be writing paragraphs with compound and complex sentences that are a minimum of six sentences long. Things to consider (you do not need to include all of them)

  1. Eye Contact
  2. Nervousness
  3. Audience Feedback
  4. Preparation
  5. Speaking Rate (Too fast? Too slow? Too many pauses?)
  6. Gestures (Did you do any?)
  7. Poise and Presence
  8. Introduction and Conclusion
  9. Organization
  10. Facial Expressions
  11. The actual trick, talent, or gift you shared--would you do that again or pick something else?

What went well? What do you need to work on for the next speech? Be as specific as possible!

  1. This was definitely my favorite speech so far. I felt very comfortable talking about punting and it was pretty easy to remember what I wanted to say. I think that my demonstration went well, it didn't take to long and I was satisfied with how I punted. Knowing that I was the expert on what I was talking about I think was what made me so comfortable. I really hope my future speeches feel as natural and comfortable as this one.

    1. Henry, your speech was really great. From experience, doing anything that takes coordination in front of people when you are nervous is really hard to do. Every speech, you seem more and more confidant, keep that up! The only thing in my opinion that hurt you was the weather outside. It was cold enough to make people want the speech to end and go inside quicker, which took away our attention and acted as an interference between you and us. Your rate was good, and your pace was good. When you have an object in your hand, I feel that it is very easy to get distracted from it. I learned that first hand when I held my golf club and tried speaking. Make sure your eyes are on the audience and not peering down at the ball. These are very small things, which is good because you have polished up and perfected the important things, very well done!

    2. Henry, I really enjoyed your speech. It was probably my favorite of yours so far. You seemed very confident and your demonstration went well. The only thing was that the weather was cold, so that made it hard to focus on your speech. I am looking forward to hearing your next speech. Keep up the good work!

    3. Henry I really liked your speech. You seemed really confident and pretty comfortable. Your punting is really good. I hope your college career goes well. Your speeches are getting better and better. I am looking forward to your next speech.

    4. I really enjoyed you speech for the reason that it was just fun to listen too. You seem very calm during your speech and I also have to say you had very good eye contact during your speech. Overall I thought this was one of your best speeches.

    5. Henry, I didn't get to listen to your speech because I was back catching the punts for you but it looked like you knew what you were talking about. You looked calm and cool as ever. It looked like you had pretty good eye contact from where I was standing. Your first punt was amazing but the other two I know you could have done better on.

  2. I think this has been my worst speech so far. Even though I normally don't really use my notes, I felt kind of empty without them. I still feel like eye contact is a big problem for me. I guess it is just sort of overwhelming to talk to so many people at once. I also think it was hard for me to speak clearly and really communicate what I was really trying to say. Probably because I get really uncomfortable talking about myself, especially in front of the whole class.

    1. Jamie, I can tell just by seeing the way you act and the way you present yourself that you are a genuinely humble person. When people like you are told to talk about themselves, it is all but natural that you struggle because you don't know how to praise yourself. So, in light of that, I have two encouraging things for you. First, be confidant! Your abilities are amazing! The dedication, time, and effort put into the constructions of your pieces are truly admirable. Do not be embarrassed to show the abilities that God has given you in full light. But, when you do, do not share in the hope of attaining self glory, but do it to show the love of God that he gave you this gift and you are working it according to his purpose. Second, this ability will grow in time. Speeches are things that take practice, and with such a hard topic as it is, do not be afraid to fail. This is how we as people grow. We have the ability to learn from our mistakes and to put our whole self into it the next time. Do not be discouraged, you did well.

    2. Jamie, I thought that you did a great job. Your speeches continue to impress me and your ability to speak to the class. I thought you had good eye contact and a good pace. I thought it was super cool to see the costume that you made. I was in shock that you were able to make all those costumes. I also liked how you added some humor when you made fun of the glitter. Overall I thought that you did a great job.

    3. Jamie, I really like this speech. I can see that you put a lot of effort on it. Your story behind this speech is very interesting and the speech itself is really well organized. I am really surprised that you made all the costume for the dance team and spend that much time on it. I am really amazed by your talent and skill. Good job!

  3. This one is definitely one of the shortest speeches that I did so far. I felt quiet confident and was calm throughout the whole speech. However, due to the reason that I have to leave early for vacations in Japan. I decided to present my speech way earlier than I thought. But overall, I think I did a great job on it. The topic was very interesting, and I am sure that I kept everyone's attentions very well. I really hope that rest of my speeches will go as smooth and successful as this one.

    2. I really liked your speech. Event though you didn’t spend a lot of time on the preparation, your speech is still really good. You looked really relaxed and comfortable. I really like the math trick you did, I don’t even know how that works! Good job on this speech.

    3. I think that this was your best speech so far. You showed a different type of talent which really worked for your speech. Continue to work on making eye contact and speaking slower. I think this speech was nicely done and I am looking forward to your next speech.

  4. My idea was rather radical, and it was very fun to do. It was definitely stressful because I was going through a rough time with my golf game and I was in the middle of changing everything. I was really nervous that I would not mess up. When I re watched my video, I felt that my pace was good and that I spoke loud enough, but my eye contact was rather poor. When I lost my train of thought, I would look up to the ceiling and look down at my club in my hand. I think that created more of a distraction than anything. Overall, I liked my idea, but I felt that this was one of my weakest speeches of the year.

    1. Unfortunately, I was not able to listen to your speech on the day that you presented. However, I was able to watch your video on youtube. You did a great job on your speech. You seemed really calm throughout the speech and your pace was good.Overall, I loved your creative idea and wish you could do better with getting more people's attention. I am looking forward to hear your next speech. Well Done, Zack.

    2. Zack, I really liked your speech. I thought it was a really cool idea, and I liked how you picked something that would be challenging to do. Even though it did not work I think you still got your point across. I would agree that you did not always look at the audience, but it was not a distraction. I thought your volume and rate was really good. Overall I thought you did a fantastic job on your speech.

    3. Zack I really liked your speech. I was really impressed about how close you got to getting the ball into the hoop. I thought your speech was really good, like always. I do not think you were as confident as you usually are but your speech was really good. I cannot wait for your next speech.

    4. Zack, you never seem to disappoint when it comes to speeches. You are always confident in yourself and always have a lot to say. And you did almost get one of those balls to go in the hoop. You still were close which was still impressive. I can't wait for your next speech

  5. This was my favorite speech so far! The topic was easy to talk about because it was based off of a personal experience, so it was fun sharing a story. I enjoyed not having a piece of paper to look at because it forced me to make good eye contact with people. Not having notes on paper also forced me to prepare for my speech more which caused me to feel more confident! I think for future speeches I will choose the same method because it helped me out a lot! Also in my next speech I want to improve my speaking rate and make use of pauses.

    1. I could definitely tell that you were more confident and that you seemed at peace as if this was something you did every day. Your eye contact was definitely better and I believe that that drew us all in to your speech. I do agree that you spoke a little fast, but not a horrible amount. Overall it was an amazing speech and I look forward to hearing more in the future!

    2. Frances, I thought that this speech was your best speech yet! I thought you had good eye contact and your story was interesting to listen to. 3. Franny, I really enjoyed your speech. I think you had good eye contact and your were enjoyable to listen to. The topic you picked was perfect for this speech because I could tell that it was something you really liked doing and were good at. I also agree that you spoke a little fast, but it was not super fast that I could not understand what you were saying. Overall it was a very nicely done speech and I enjoy to hear your next one.

  6. I will say that this was not my favorite speech simply because I enjoyed the last speech so much. This was still a very fun speech and I also believe it was the easiest. I do still need to work on eye contact and not just stare straight forwards. I feel like I am getting more confident about my speeches and that they are overall improving. I will incorporate more eye contact and more gestures as the year goes on.

  7. I thought that my speech was average, and I did not like talking about myself. I thought that my eye contact was good, and that I looked around the whole room. I tried really hard not to fidget with my pants, and I did not do that this time. I thought my volume and rate were loud and slow enough for everyone to understand. I thought that bringing the visual aid in helped to keep the audience engaged. I thought that my intro was good, but my conclusion was bad. I thought it was hard to tell if I was done with my speech. I thought that I picked a good talent because I do not think many people thought that I like to bake. I would pick this topic again in the future. I am excited for my next speech, and watch myself grow as a speaker.

I do agree that we didn't know when you were done until you started to walk away from the podium. Other than that this was an amazing speech!

    2. Grace! You had a strong intro that caught our attention. It was fun hearing a personal story on how you started making pies. Bringing in your pie was a sweet surprise! It was a great visual aid that also tasted great (: The only thing I can say you need to work on is to speak at a constant rate. Keep baking and keep up the good work!

    3. Grace I really liked your speech. You are enjoyable to listen to and you engage the audience well. Bringing in the apple pie really topped off your speech! It was a great visual aid and it tasted so good! I would say that you should continue to work on speaking at a constant rate. I also agree that your conclusion was a little weak. Overall it was a great speech and I look forward to hearing your next one!

    4. Grace, I thought you did great on your speech. It was good that you didn't just put off all the ingredients in the recipe but you talked about the beginning when you made pies. The pie tasted great too. You also brought confidence which was great. Overall great job.

  8. I think this speech went out OK. My voice is clear and loud. The speech is well Organized. I paid attention to the audience and they were really focused on me. My performance was better than I expected. The only problem was I said that I made a mistake and I shouldn’t say that. If I didn’t say that, the audience can’t even notice. I think I made this mistake because I was really nervous.

    1. Steven, I thought you gave a really good speech. I was not expecting you to play the harmonica because I have never seen anyone play the harmonica before. That's probably why I thought it was totally amazing. Your speaking skills were great, as usual. I also felt this speech was more personal for you, which made it really easy to listen to you. Like you said, this breaks away front the logical side of yourself, and it's nice to see that part of you too. You set the bar high for your next speech, but I know you'll do fine!

I was not expecting you to play the harmonica. In my memory, I have played the harmonica when I was a little girl. Actually, this was not easy to played. I thought you spoke a little fast that I could not understand what you were saying. Anyway, this was one of my favorite speeches for this round.

  9. I have to say probably the most fun I've had while giving a speech. As I got more into the trick and the audience was amazed I felt better and better about what I was talking about. It just flowed very well. Also I felt that my eye contact improved greatly but still room for improvement. This speech gave me confidence in what I was doing and talking about and that really allowed me to just have fun with this speech.

In the previous speech, I were nervous and I could not make eye contacts with other students. But during this time, I can make much more eye contacts and speak loudly. I also thought it was a good idea to pass your book around instead of taking the time to flip by each page, and how instead you actually made one while giving your speech. I tried deliberately focusing on slowing down when I was talking which also helped me focus on what I was saying. Also, my talent was something that I knew I was good at and would not mess up, so that also helped my be calm and natural. I hope that I can keep improving and continue to get better and better!

    2. Cassie, I think you did a really good job with your speech. I think that even though your topic was easy to do, it was a hard one to present. I think you did an excellent job with it! I loved how even when you were braiding Franny's hair, you kept talking and didn't leave an awkward silence. I think you had a great tone and speed. You also made it very easy to listen to, even though hair braiding doesn't interest everyone. Good job!

  12. This was a really enjoyable speech. I had a really hard time coming up with something to do since, the others things I had in mind were kind of not practical to do a speech on and well, I got a little spark of enlightment and I realized that I should do it on all the languages I know, since I think its something cool i can do. I didn't practice for it that much, kind of went over the time and well, I also got interrupted by the bell which kind of threw me off tracks, but I think i finished quite neatly.

  14. Well I thought this was one of least favorite speech's because it was hard for me to find something I am good at. I also very nervous on how class was going to like my speech because lots of people do not like scouting or have never heard of it. During my speech I had that long blank time during the time I was working on the knots for my splint. I was very confident for this speech because I know what I was talking about. Well I thought this speech I knew was I was talking about. I thought this was a okay speech. I feel like I need a better attitude and better eye contact. Overall there are things I need to work and get better at. But overall I thought this speech was just okay.

    1. Tyler, I enjoyed listening to your speech and watching your demonstration. I thought it was cool how you showed us what making a splint is like because I don't think many, if any, of the rest of the class knows how to do it. You seemed confident and you should because you are the expert on your topic. I think a couple of things that you could work on are your rate and eye contact. The rate you talked at could have probably been a little more consistent throughout your speech, and, like you mentioned, you did struggle a little bit with eye contact. Overall, I thought that your speech was well done.

I couldn't really think of anything better to do. Other than that though I think that it had a good meaning to it since it was something that stuck with me since my childhood so it was kind of easy to present it. I feel like the audience was engaged with it as well so that is a good thing. I could have had a better and stronger finish to it though and that is something I will work on.
