1 Minute of Fame

What are you famous for doing? After your one minute of fame speech, reflect on it below. Write one well-written and thought-out paragraph. Use complete sentences and correct grammar. Upper classmen should be writing paragraphs with compound and complex sentences that are a minimum of six sentences long. Things to consider (you do not need to include all of them)

  1. eye contact
  2. nervousness
  3. audience feedback
  4. preparation
  5. speaking rate (too fast? too slow? too many pauses?)
  6. gestures (Did you do any?)
  7. poise and presence
  8. introduction and conclusion
  9. organization
  10. facial expressions
  11. The actual trick, talent, or gift you shared--would you do that again or pick something else?

What went well? What do you need to work on for the next speech? Be as specific as possible!

  1. To start off, as I watched my speech I found several errors. First I swayed back and forth, which to me, as a listener was distracting. Also I found that I took to long to get to my point. Which was how life was like an airplane ride. I also used a lot of filler words and at some points of the speech I contradicted myself, while talking about the party on the plane. In my opinion some of the brighter sides of my speech was that my gestures where ok, they might have been too much, but I felt comfortable up at the podium. If I had to redo this speech I think I would still stick to the airplane idea, except practice a bit more, and I would need to think about what I am saying, before I say it. In conclusion I hope I do not crash during my life. I would enjoy a smooth landing.

    1. Alex, I found your speech fun to listen to because it was very conversational and you had a lot of fun up there. I think you already know that practicing it a few more times would help, but all in all, it was good. You made good uses of pauses, and had pretty good eye contact. Your conclusion was the best I've seen from this class. Keep up the good work!

    2. Alex your speech was great it changed my life the airplane metaphor was spot on and i liked that it hit someone at the end although I was very confused about your talent until the very end but it ended up as an awsome overall speech

    3. I liked your speech the best because you contradicted yourself so many times. You made a paper airplane that crash landed and you were just weird about it as usual. I wish that I could be as talented as you are with making paper airplanes, but I guess it is not in me to be that good. Sad day.

    4. alex i loved your speech i thought it was hilarious, it seemed a little more impromptu than it probably should have been but it went well, you gave us a little story about your life, your eye contact could have been better though and you kept swaying a bit try to keep standing tall and have confidence.

    5. Alex your speech was so funny I didn't expect you to make a airplane out of no where will you were speaking to us and you seemed to lose eye contact cause of that. In all your speech was pretty good and it was very engaging but for next time you should be more prepared before you go up their.

    6. Alex, your speech was so funny. You have a unique style about you when you're speaking that grabs everyone's attention. You always get the class laughing. You seemed to make eye contact with us, but you did sway a little. Besides that, nice job.

    7. Alex, your speech was really informative. I actually didnt realize your speech was leading to your special talent being maing paper airplaines, but perhaps that is just because I am slow. Your eye contact was impressive considering that you were multitasking. You also had a great way of adding hunor.to your speech whether it was intentional or not. Good job.

  2. Alex your speech was really funny I liked it a lot. I was wondering the whole time what you were going to do for your speech, and then at the last minute I saw you building a paper airplane. It was kinda funny too at the end where it crashed into Marissa. She's ok though so that's good.

    1. Peter i liked your speech because you went up there and sang and it was good too and it takes a lot of courage to do what you did.I know as hard as it is next time be more confident because you can hear it in your voice when you talk or sing but overall i thought it was great.

  3. I really loved this speech. Not only was I excited to see what everyone else was good at, but I was also really excited to show all of you how I wrestle. I am very happy with how my presentation went. I had good eye contact, I hit all of the main points i wanted to hit, and the actual moves were cleanly executed. I wish I would've had more time to talk because there was so much more I would've shown you all. Maybe I would've even had a live match. Who knows. The only place I feel I stumbled was my conclusion, but overall I'm very happy.

    1. I really enjoyed your speech I liked that you were passionate about what you were speaking about I liked when you slammed Jon repeatedly on the floor i think you were very confident and did not stutter at all and overall it was a very good speech

    2. You did great job on your speech. Your eye contact was steller, your presentation was interesting, impressive, and only slightly painful. But even more impressive was your smooth transitioning between speaking to demonstrating to back to speaking. You seemed well-rehearsed.

  4. Matt I think your speech was really good. It was really funny to see you use Farnes and Aaron as "test dummies." I wish you did have more time because seeing a live match would have been really cool. You did really did good though.

  5. I think my speech went really well. I'm gaining more confidence as I go along. I was really surprised that I was able to get the lyrics out. My thoughts were well organized too which, again was surprising to me because I was changing it constantly the night before. I got some really good feedback too. People were really impressed with my signing. I thought it really wouldn't be that special and was kinda intimidated because to me everyone else's talents were special. It turned out great though I think.

Peter I thought you did really well in your speach. It was beter then yoru other ones, I think, because you seemed really confident once you started singging. You sang very well and had good eye contact. Your talent was diffrent from what every one else did so thats why it stood out to me.

    2. Great speech pal, I honor you for going infant of people and preforming like you did. Great eye contact and overall swell job. In addition never underestimate your ability to do what you love.

    3. I applaud you for having the cajones to sing in front of the class like that, especially without any music. I was pretty impressed by your singing. You transitioned pretty nicely from speaking to singing. Nice job.

    4. I feel you did a great job on your speech going in front of the class and singing like you did I could of never done that but you did and it was great.Peter you seemed a little nervous but you keep it up on what you were going to talk about and looked around the room and it was really interesting great job keep it up.

    5. Peter, your speech was one of my favorites. It took a lot of guts to go up in front of everyone and put yourself out there. Your voice was great and I could tell that you practiced. You seemed a little nervous, but I think we all were. Over all good job!

    6. Peter, in short I was more than impressed with your speech. Out of the talents and minutes of fame presented, I would argue that yours took the most courage to do. You were well prepared and your eye contact was on point. You stayed focus on your subject for the most part, but some the facts about the band I found were a little trivial and said only because you were starting to go off on a tangent. But you refocused and you did a good job overall.

I think that my speach needed more practice, I started to ramble a little bit and started to get distracted while i was talking about how I started using crystal sticks. My eye contact on that speach was poor, I was looking at the crystal sticks more then the listeners. I think too much on what I am going to say next and hesitate.
P.S. my midle name is not Atomal

    1. I found your speech very nice, your talent was unique, and thats what made it special. I would agree on your eye contact comment. Other than that it was a solid speech.

    2. Steven I really liked your speech. I actually thought that you seemed to focus more on your topic and stay on track a lot more than you have in your other speeches. I also agree about the eye contact but you did great on showing us your talent and always seem pretty confident.
P.S. WHAT IS YOUR MIDDLE NAME

    3. Steven, I enjoyed your speech tremendously. You seemed to have gone through the basic idea of what you were saying, and your eye contact was not that bad. Although you did mess up a few times, your tricks were interesting and impressive. As you were doing your conclusion you managed to distract yourself, but you quickly focused again and went on a slight tangent. Overall, great job on your speech.

  7. I did not like my speech. Before I gave the speech I was in the gym practicing what I was going to do and I was hitting the tricks perfectly, but soon as the time came to give the speech I just could not do it. I maybe could have practiced a bit more but I have been doing that trick for awhile now. I don’t even know if I stayed on topic or if it was organized, but I did get the trick down in the end.

    1. G-money you may not have liked your speech but i did it showed us a little bit of who you are which is nice to see. even though you didn't land your tricks right away i thought you did really well and you seemed to enjoy yourself a bit up there probably because skateboarding is something you like to do

  8. I thought my speech went well although i could have been a little bit more prepared than I was but it was a fun speech to do because it was on something that i like to do. I did kinda notice when i was giving my speech i was playing with my skateboard a little too much and that something i need to work on. I didn't like that I didn't land my tricks i wish i could have landed them so my speech would have seemed better but its hard for me to land tricks especially because i couldn't practice with all the snow and i didn't even warm up before i started.

    1. Brett, I think this was one of your better speeches, and that may have been because you were very passionate about what you were doing. I think you seemed a bit more confident and conversational and although you didn't land your tricks very well, we all understood because the floor was slippery and you brushed it off like a pro. I think your eye contact and gestures instead of playing with your skateboard could be the places this speech could've have been improved upon but otherwise good job.

  9. I felt like my speech overall went okay. I felt like it was disorganized and could have been a bit more rehearsed, and also my eye contact could have been better. I also felt myself repeating what I was saying and felt like it was choppy and I lost my main points.

Steven: I loved what you did with your intro and conclusion. Very detailed and cool tricks!!

Hailey: I feel like I learned something new about you and your eyebrow thing was really cool! It was a little short but overall nice job

Jon: I felt like you were well prepared and you put lots of thought into yours. Good eye contact and your trick was really cool!!

  11. I feel my speech went pretty good I was nervous as usually and I didn't have the pictures prepared before I went up their so that through me off a lot. I know I didn't make a lot of eye contact but I tried it's pretty hard getting front of everyone and especially when you don't do it that often and everyones staring at you it just nerve racking. For next time I need to prepare more better for my speech and practice a lot more than I did so I can improve on my speech skills and I will do more better when I'm up their. I think the slides went will after I got them sent it went I would do it again because photograph and editing is something I love and enjoy. I know I didn't have the best posture and I was so nervous so I know for the speeches to come to be more prepared and be organized and practice more to.

  12. I think my speech could have gone a lot better than it did. I didn't really warm up or prepare to actually hurdle which probably made me more nervous and affected my speaking. I didn't really have my speech very organized and think that was a little obvious. I felt as though I was just kind of rambling and could have done a much better job showcasing what I can do.

  13. I believe this speech went better than the previous one. I was still a bit nervous, and this showed in how I spoke and my lack of eye contact. If I had practiced more my confidence and poise would have come along farther. However, I believe that my speech was organized and to the point. I had an introduction, middle and an end. I did not use many gestures, I may have put up a finger for my first pose, or two for my second, besides that I did not make much use of them. My "talent" was yoga. If I had the opportunity to redo this speech I wouldn't have chosen differently. I felt the most solid on this topic, and felt that I had information to back it up.

  14. Reflecting back on my speech, my biggest problem was that I did not plan out the speaking portion of my presentation. I decided last minute that I would do my speech on my handmade micro-crossbows and that I world attempt to pop ballons. That was all the planning I did. Looking back at my speech, I see that not planning out the speaking portion resulted in a weak introduction, a weak body and presenting, and no conclusion what-so-ever. There are multiple long ackward pauses and I severely used filler words. I don't think my eye contact was up to par either. Although it was entertaining to pop balloons and kept the audience interested, it was evident that I had to many balloons. I realize that there is no speech I can do last minute.

    1. Jon I thought that you had something cool to share that not many people knew about you. even though the balloons didnt pop ever time i still thought it was cool what you did

  15. Looking back on my speech I could have done much better then I did. I was really nervous for some reason and I also got really sweaty. While I was actually doing the Nutmeg I messed it up and the touch went way to far across the gym floor. I also didn't end very well either I ended with saying i'm done. The one thing I did right is i got it through Aaron's legs. Overall I could have done so much better then I did

  16. I enjoyed my speech a little bit, I always love talking about track because it's my favorite thing in the world. That topic however was not my first idea. I was planning on doing hurdles, but that's what Rachel did. Then I was thinking about doing wrestling, but Bremer informed me that's what he was doing. I felt like I didn't make that good of eye contact and at the end my voice started shaking because I always get more and more nervous as the speech goes on.

Matt Bremer: of course I loved your speech because you and I have that bond of throwing people all the time. You made great eye contact and you were really passionate about what you were talking about. I was glad to be a part of it and keep practicing for next year in wrestling.

Alex: you sir and a genius when it comes to on the spot talking. Although I'm sure you were nervous as everyone is, but you seemed in control as always. I enjoyed the content of your speech and you spoke clearly and had a nice prop ending

  17. this was probably the hardest speech I have done.I probably practice more times than I should have, but no matter how many times I practiced I still closed my eyes and flashbacked every time I talked about looking under the science table.I didn't remember making any hand gestures except for the one where I pounded on the desk, but I don't know why I did that as it was not planned. also did not realize that I still do with my hands behind my back the entire time. I fumbled around with my manuscript, which was somewhat distracting. the tempo of the speech and my rate of speaking was incredibly fast that at times it was difficult to spit out the words and enunciate them correctly. at times I had alright I contact and at other times my eye contact was non-existent.the content of my speech was amazing in my opinion, but I struggled to keep my composure.overall, this speech could have been a lot better, but than again it could have been worse.

  20. My minute of fame speech took me a long time to think of. I could not think of what would be a good thing to talk about. When i thought of doing my eyenrow and ear movements i was a little nervous and felt like i would get negative feedback because it is a little weird. I felt i did ok but there is always room for improvement. I felt my eye contact was good but my pace and volume were bad.

  21. my 1 Minute of fame was fun to do. I liked to share how much football means to me and show people that there is a lot more to the sport than people see on Friday nights. I would have liked to get a few more pictures for the power point, but overall I thought it went well.
