Impromptu Speech

Please reflect on your impromptu speech by writing one well-written and thought-out paragraph. Use complete sentences and correct grammar. Upper classmen should be writing paragraphs with compound and complex sentences that are a minimum of six sentences long. Things to consider (you do not need to include all of them)

  1. Eye Contact
  2. Nervousness
  3. Audience Feedback
  4. Preparation (What did you do during your 2 minutes--would you do the same thing? Do you have advice for future impromptu speakers?)
  5. Speaking Rate (too fast? too slow? too many pauses?)
  6. Gestures (Did you do any?)
  7. Poise and Presence
  8. Confidence Level
  9. Introduction and Conclusion
  10. Organization
  11. Facial Expressions

What went well? What do you need to work on for the next speech? Would you want to try it again or are you glad it is done? Be as specific as possible!

In addition, leave feedback for at least two students. Feedback should be specific and original

  1. I completely disliked this speech and how I presented it. I had a few ideas in my head but felt very rushed while I was preparing and couldn't organize my thoughts properly. I'm a person who likes to have time to prepare and this did not give me time to prepare. I lost my train of thought halfway through and started to blank out and panic, I think I psyched myself out a lot because of the rushed feeling I had. I like the other speeches much better because we have more time to think things through and organize.

    1. I thought you had a really strong introduction and some good points!

    2. I found that I had the same problem where my points got missed up. I thought your speech was still well done though.

    3. Even though, you blanked near the end, the rest of the speech was strong and well put together. Good job!

    4. I actually really liked the speech you presented to the class. I thought it was well organized or at least pretty organized. It seemed for the most part like you new exactly what to say.

    5. It was a bit of challenge for me as well, trying to organize your thoughts. Even though this speech did not go as well as you would have liked, I still believe you had many good points. Your eye contact, volume , speed, and gestures were all really great!

    6. It definitely didn't seem like you didn't like the speech. You only looked like you didn't know what to say at one point and then you quickly recovered. I think you did a really good job!

  2. I did not really like this speech as much as the others. I was actually very nervous for this speech. I like to know what I am doing before I do it, so not knowing what topic I was going to get made me extra nervous. I was lucky enough to pick a good enough topic where I had a story to tell. I felt like that helped me a lot. Especially with getting into the time frame. Towards the end I really did not know what to put for a conclusion as my topic was to describe the last movie I saw. I did better than I thought I would have done.

    1. I thought your speech went well! I would have also struggled with the movie topic. Overall I thought you took a difficult prompt and turned it into something good.

    2. I enjoyed your speech! I liked the story about going to the movie and telling us the plot. I also liked how you made a nice personal connection. All in all, a great speech.

    3. I really enjoyed your speech. You turned a small topic into something interesting where you had a story to share with the class, which caught my attention and kept me interested. It would have been a topic I would have struggled with, so I like what you did with it. Being a horror movie fan myself, this made me very much want to see this movie. Great job!

    4. Sarah, I thought your speech went well. Even though the conclusion was a little weak, it still pulled the speech back in to your topic. Overall, you made good eye contact and you looked like you knew what you were saying and you most importantly got us engaged and made us think about the movie. Nice Job

  3. Going into this speech I was very excited for it. I felt that I would be better at just talking then actually planning a speech out. When I received my prompt I was excited for it and thought of some good ideas. When I actually got up to the podium I realized that my ideas would not get me past the time needed. I barely made it to the one minute mark. I unfortunately spoke to fast again and that hurt me in the long run. In conclusion I was very optimistic about this speech but it did not go as planned.

    1. Keilani, you presented your speech very well as in a way that you were talking to the audience rather than just trying to fill in your time limit and constantly think up some stuff to say that was related to your topic. It kept me very interested.

    2. I thought your speech was good and you had a lot of interesting this to say and it was one of my favorite speeches of the class.

    3. I feel that everyone has the same problem. I guess that happens. You think of something you want to say and when it is time for you to give your speech you either forget or talk to fast and have to talk more just to get to time. Don't feel bad, I think of a lot of things to say and usually can't remember most of them when it is my turn. I think it is something that happens to everyone and it is just something we got to work on. Otherwise, I liked your speech, nice job.

  4. Feedback:

Randi: I liked your speech! I wish I could have had your topic because I could have actually had a good speech then! It was cool learning about your trip to Atlanta.

Zack: Your speech was exciting to listen to. You took an idea and went with it and it turned out great.

Brooke: I liked your intro and your conclusion. You also had some great points.

  5. I feel that my speech went really well, at least for an impromptu speech. I was surprised at how much I actually enjoyed doing this speech. To be honest, those 2 minutes didn’t really even help me to prepare because there were a million different thoughts going through my head at once. I think if I were to improve upon something from this speech, is to always make good eye contact. I also think I could’ve slowed down a bit. In conclusion, I really enjoyed this speech and was surprised at how well i gave it.

    2. Krista, I really liked your speech! You had a strong introduction and conclusion. You also had outstanding eye contact and, as usual, spoke clearly so everyone could understand you. Great job!

    3. Everything that you said was interesting and gave a personal view into your past spelling bee's. You looked like you knew exactly what you were going to say before you said it and you didn't stutter even if you didn't know what you wanted to say next. You had a very nice conclusion that wrapped everything up nicely. Overall I liked how you told us about what you are good at and how you were able to tie it together in the end.

  6. I was very nervous leading up to this speech. I am the type of person that likes to have time to organize my thoughts and practice before speaking in public. Overall, I believe my speech went just okay. I was not very confident in my topic and the points that I made. I do think I made pretty good eye contact and spoke at a legible volume, but I need to work on my facial expressions and tone. In the end I do not think this speech was my best.

    1. I know how hard you can be on yourself and honestly, you didn't do bad on this speech at all. You had very organized thoughts for it being an impromptu speech. You were very easy to understand and I enjoyed your speech very much. Keep up all the good work!

    2. Brooke, I think you did very well on organization and gesture. You always smile which is very good. Besides, your tone and volume is very good, so everyone can hear and understand you very easy. Good job.

  7. Feed back-

Sarah- I really liked how you used your personal story and connected it to your topic. You had very organized points and a strong introduction and conclusion. I could not tell that you were very nervous!

Keilani- It was great how your speech reflected your opinion so well and although it was a bit quick you did portray your points and argument well.

Sam- I enjoyed your speech and how you presented it. You seemed confident and has good eye contact. Considering this is a topic many students agree with it was good how you showed your point of view on it.

  8. I like impromptu speeches as in general but not for speech class. For speech class I would rater plan out all the meticulous details as not to allow for too many errors. Yeah this speech was fun for me because of the topic. I tried to maintain constant rate of speech and volume to hear. Obviously if you have not guessed my morals when playing board games may be slightly skewed but that is not a problem unless. Once again I did not perform proper procedures for hand gestures but once again this just comes from my background as I do not find them necessary to engage an audience in the same fashion as facial expressions.

    2. David your speech was the most interesting one I heard. I don't think anybody else would have been able to take the topic you did and make it so different and intriguing. I was very impressed with what you did and you maintained a constant speaking speed and volume the whole time, you were very calm and had your thoughts very organized.

    4. Your speeches are always one of my favorites you take an ordinary topic and give it a totally new spin and perspective. I know you were nervous before hand because you told me but if you did not tell me I wouldn't have known. You maintained an even pace and good volume. Overall I really enjoyed your speech.

    5. David, I was pretty busy frantically writing my speech so I was not able to listen very well to yours but what I did hear was a lot of laughter. I just went back and watched it on YouTube and now I know why everyone was laughing. No one ever thinks of family games like that but you put a nice new spin and made everyone think about each of those games differently and with a new perspective. Nice Job.

    6. David, I liked your impromptu speech and all your speeches in the past. I just like how you go up there and your not afraid to talk about anything. Also, I like how you lead us into your like world of family games and they should be designed or played. I look forward to your future speeches.

  9. To be honest I am very disappointed on my impromptu speech. I have been doing impromptu for two years competitively now and what I showed was not what I have been taught. To be honest, the categories that were picked were not categories that were used for competition. They were just one or two words that we were supposed to cover, so it was definitely a new experience for me. I talked way too fast and I had no conclusion at all. I didn't even make my time and my preparation layout was an unorganized mess. I hope no other speeches are like the one I have just presented and will try to learn from my past mistakes.

    2. Vincent, the speech was NOT bad. Sure it was a little rough on some of the points and you did kind of rush through it but in the end you still were able to connect to almost everyone on what you like to do on a date and why you like to go to those places. In the end you thought you did badly but you really pulled of a speech on a hard subject. Good job.

  10. I thought my speech went well. It was a little bit short, but overall I covered everything that I wanted to. When picking my topics I got a little nervous because I didn't know if I was going to get something I could easily talk about. Then luckily I got what do you like most about the winter season. Right away I knew that I could talk about my birthday and Christmas because they were so close together.

    2. I liked your speech about the winter season. I'm right there with you when you say you like winter. I like winter myself. You were able to connect with some of us who like winter. I liked that you explained why you like winter. You looked like you were prepared even though you only had a couple minutes to prepare. Nice job.

    3. I liked your speech about winter. I was also able to connect with you right away when you said your birthday was in the winter season, because mine is as well. You sounded like you were very confident in what you were talking about. You also seemed like you were well organized with what you wanted to say with your topic.

  11. I didn't enjoy this speech. I thought I would really like it because I have no issue speaking or answering on the fly but it turned out to be a lot harder than anticipated. I struggled with the three topics I had chosen and spent to much time deciding which one I was going to choose as opposed to how to make a good speech. I struggle with rate because I am a fast talker naturally causing my speech to be too short. I still thought I had clear points as to why I would choose the small box over the big box. I also think I had slightly better eye contact, it's still not great but it is improving. Overall I am still glad I did this speech I thought it was a good experience to have but I don't know if I would do it again.

    1. I thought your speech was really good! I enjoyed your perspectives on the big and little boxes. It really made me think about which one I would choose! I agree where you said you talked a little fast, but to be perfectly honest, we all did! Keep up the good work!

    2. I liked what you did with the topic you took. It took creativity to come up with the ideas you had on what could be in the big box versus the little box, and your ideas seemed mostly organized. I could tell you were a bit nervous because you talked pretty fast, but it was still slow enough that I could understand the points you were making.

  12. To be honest this was not my favorite speech. I guess I like knowing what I am going to talk about before I go in front of people and talk. I felt that I did alright. I got a topic that I could relate to. I really did not have a flow to my speech, I kind of just talked about different points I had come up with in my head. I feel pretty good when I know what I am talking about so my confidence was good. I feel that my eye contact was good. I like the idea of thinking of a speech on the fly but I am definitely someone who prefers to know what my topic is well in advance.

  13. I liked this speech a lot more than I had anticipated. The questions were fairly simple and I thought did not need much thought. I think I did well with having a strong introduction and conclusion. Something else that I thought I did well with was eye contact. Since there was not much preparation, I found it was much easier to look around the room because my eyes were not drawn to a manuscript or notecards. One thing that I might not have done so well with was the speed at which I was taking. When I give speeches, I tend to talk faster than I normally do for some reason. Overall, I am satisfied with how I did on this speech.

  14. Honestly, this speech was my favorite so far. It was so relaxed and soothing! I loved being able to just go up there and speak without much practice to stress me out. I knew I talked faster than I would have liked to, but I will work on that. I thought my eye contact was very good and so were my gestures. The topic I had was so easy to talk about and that really reduced my nerves. I could have talked forever about my favorite family vacation! I need to work on my conclusion a little more and stronger transitions. Overall, this speech was so much fun and I would like to do more of these.

    1. Randi, your speech was really good. This is why you do so well during morning announcements, you are good at improvising when you don't know what to say next and buy time to think about your next idea. You really grabbed everyone's attention when you were able to use a personal story to add to your topic. You did not look nervous at all and you made good eye contact with the class. Nice job.

  15. I felt so nervous during the speech, because I did not have time to think of my conclusion. So I got a lot of grammar mistakes. I still need to practice more about my speaking. In the conversation, people can ask to say again if they do not understand, but in the speech, if I got a lot of mistakes people will not understand at all. It is a good experience for me to know my speech skill and to improve it.

  16. This speech was definitely my favorite. I felt like I had an excuse to "be bad" because I didn't have time to prepare, but weirdly this made me more confident and I actually ended up doing better than I thought I would. I thought it was fun being able to just make up a story on the spot and tell it and even though the story probably wasn't funny it was still super fun just making it up and telling it. If I just remembered to do little things like more eye contact and hand movements I feel my speech would've been much better.

  18. I really liked this speech, it was kind of fun having to think of what to say less than 2 minutes before I presented to the class. I thought my eye contact was good and I think I used some gestures even though I didn't mean to. Everything went really well until the end when I got to talking about video games and then I felt like I lost my train of thought and I just didn't remember where I wanted to go with that topic. In the end, my conclusion felt strong but right before it, I wasn't doing so great.

  20. I didn't exactly enjoy this speech to much. When I went to go pick my three topics I didn't really know where I would go with them. But when I looked at the Mac or PC topic again it caught my eye, because I realized that I have both kinds of computers in my house. However, when I started to jot down notes on this topic, I only got like 2 points down. That's when I started to get even more nervous, because I did not want to be under a minute. Overall, looking back on my speech, I thought my eye contact improved but I also think that I need to speak clearer when its my turn.

I remember you said something really funny but I forgot what you said but it's really good that you're keeping the audience "entertained" I think that it made everybody like it more towards the end. And yes, I do agree that your volume could've been better, as your voice was pretty "crumbly" for the most part. Good job overall!
