Something I Treasure

Write one well-written and thought-out paragraph. Use complete sentences and correct grammar. Upper classmen should be writing paragraphs with compound and complex sentences that are a minimum of six sentences long. Things to consider

  1. Eye Contact--Was it difficult using a manuscript?
  2. Nervousness
  3. Audience Feedback
  4. Preparation
  5. Speaking Rate (too fast? too slow? too many pauses?)
  6. Gestures (Did you do any?)
  7. Poise and Presence
  8. Introduction and Conclusion
  9. Organization
  10. Facial Expressions
  11. Visual Aid

What went well? What do you need to work on for the next speech? Be as specific as possible!

In addition, leave feedback for at least two students. Feedback should be specific and original

  1. I thought that this speech went very well for me. I think that talking about my beard was a choice, it was fun to present and I think the class enjoyed listening to it. The use of my slideshow was a good idea, it really helped show what I was talking about and helped keep the audience engaged. I also tried to use a little bit of humor and I think it work really well by making me more comfortable. It was nice to be able to use a manuscript to know exactly what I wanted to say, but it definitely took away some of my eye contact. Overall, I think that this was one of my best speeches.

    1. Henry! I enjoyed your speech so much! I thought your topic was extremely creative and I thought you did a great job with your intro. I liked that you kept us guessing at first and didn't just give it away. I also think that the pictures were a great addition and helped keep the audiences attention. I also enjoyed the accidental humor that was put in. Overall, excellent job!

    2. Henry I enjoyed your speech a lot! I felt kind of connected with you there because I'm trying to grow a beard myself, I'm still working on it but I'll get there someday! It was really smoothly presented and the pictures kept eveyone's attention really easily. I'm looking foward your next speech!

    3. Henry, three things, 1: nice beard. 2: I want a beard. 3: best speech ever. That is all.

    4. Henry, I enjoyed your speech a lot. It was surprisingly good. The topic is very creative. You definitely caught everyone's attentions on this speech. And I liked how you put the pictures on the power point in order to show us some visual images. Overall, great job.

    5. Henry your speech was awesome it was so much fun to learn about and how much facial hair you can grow. Great eye contact and everything else you did amazing. Great job.

    6. Henry, you did a great job. Your speech was very interesting. I was surprised your facial hair can be styled in so many ways. I like your story. I believe you will do well. By the way, I like the way you do not have much facial hair because it makes you look younger.

    7. Henry, I really liked your speech. Your topic was so interesting! I didn’t even know someone treasure their beard that much. The use of PPT was really helpful for your speech topic, it made the speech more lively and visual. Good job!

    8. Henry, I loved your speech. It was probably my favorite speech. As the speech went on I think you got more and more confidence which really helped your speech. I think your eye contact was also very good. The pictures were a really good addition to it. I aspire to have a beard like you. Nice job! Cannot wait for your next speech.

    9. Henry, your speech was one of my favorites. You did a great job with the slide show to and tying it into your speech. I am not lying when I say you had the audience at the edge of their seats waiting for that next slide! You did a great job and you are really talented at public speaking for the quiet guy that you are. Keep up the good work!

    10. Henry, I really enjoyed your speech. You did a good job of using humor and connecting it into a topic that you care about. It was also interesting to see things from a different perspective when it comes to growing facial hair. You put meaning behind a topic that many might consider casual or meaningless and that is worth attention.

  2. I think my speech went very well. I really enjoyed my topic and I think that showed in my voice. When I am passionate about what I'm talking about, time flies, so I was over time. I hope it wasn't boring. I think my eye contact suffered. I think that was a result of not enough practice. Overall I think it went well, and I hope everyone enjoyed.

    1. Zack, I really love listening to you speak. The way you put your speeches together is always so captivating! Even though your speech went a little long it didn't seem like that at all. It was very easy to listen to and I didn't feel myself getting bored. I agree with the eye contact I feel like you are usually always looking at the audience and so even though you weren't glued to the page it was still weird to see. Great job otherwise :)

    2. Zack, I really loved your speech. You always did an excellent on organizing your structure for your speech. You seemed very confident and calm. It was pretty fun to listen to your speech so I think your classmates definitely were paying attention through the whole speech. I think your eye contact is good since you made tons of interactions with the audiences. Overall, Good Job.

    3. I really liked your speech Zack! So much so that I thought it deserved a standing ovation at the end of it. You were right when you said that I wouldn't figure out what was so special about that key chain. I also found it really awesome that it tied into not only a good life lesson but also your faith. I didn't notice that you were over time because your speech kept me focused on you. Your eye contact did suffer more than usual due to the fact that you had the manuscript there and you like to look at the ceiling occasionally too. Other than that your speech was amazing!

    4. Zack I really loved your speech. I could tell that you really enjoyed your topic. Overall I think you did a very nice job, but sometimes I felt like you talked a little fast as the result of being so passionate. I agree on the eye contact. I never get bored during your speeches! Keep up the great work!

    5. Zack I really enjoyed your speech. It was very good. I could tell tell that you were really passionate and it made the speech even better. I never really thought about what people have on there key chains can tell you about that person. I did not notice at all that you went over your time. My attention was kept during the whole speech. I think your eye contact was not as good as on your other speeches but it was still pretty good. I like how you pray before your speeches and I think I might start doing that. Overall, really nice job!

    6. Your speech was very interesting. At first, I couldn't pick the important object off of your keychain, and once I did find the correct one, I was stumped as to why it was so important to you. This was a very interesting way to keep me thinking throughout your speech, but it made me pay a bit less attention to your speaking. It was a very interesting idea and I think it played out correctly overall. Good speech.

  3. I am extremely pleased with the way my speech went! Having a manuscript made me feel really comfortable, I tried my best with eye contact but it was a little tricky. I think I could've worked a little bit on the conclusion and maybe on the introduction, but again, those are just little adjustments for my next speeches. Again, having a manuscript really made a difference. I am glad I was able to share with the class that item i treasure with my life. Thanks for listening my speech and hope it was enjoyable.

    1. I loved the pillow Pablo. I feel like it took us all back to that item we all had in our childhood. I could tell that you were more comfortable and a lot more confident. I do like how when the robber was in your house they didnt take your precious item. I cant wait to hear more of your speeches in the future!

    2. Pablo, I really liked your speech. I never thought about how much I actually treasure my pillow. I think your eye contact was really good considering we had a manuscript speech. You also looked very confident and comfortable. Pablo your speech was very good and I cannot wait for your next one.

    3. Pablo, Its crazy to think how random objects can affect your life so much. I liked the pillow idea. It made me wonder what me and my pillow have gone through. Overall I really liked your speech and I can't wait for your next one

    4. Pablo I really enjoyed your speech about your pillow. It was very interesting to hear you relate different experiences and stories you have had with it and the sentimental importance that such a simple object can have. Your delivery was solid and your accent did not take away from your speech. I think you did a good job and you should be proud of your performance.

  4. I really didn't like this speech and I thought it was one of my worst speeches. The manuscript really stressed me out. I felt like I couldn't miss anything and had to constantly stare to make sure I didn't. I also felt like I was talking very fast and was extremely nervous. I did enjoy going first though because I felt like I could just relax the rest of the time and enjoy everyone else's speeches. Overall, I really didn't like this speech style so I probably won't be using it again!

    1. Amy, I know comfort level is important when giving a speech, but you did not seem out of sorts to me. If anything, it helped your cause a little. If you had gone up and talked with a huge smile on your face and superlative confidence, then your speech would not have made sense. The pauses, and the tone of your voice showed a sort of sorrow and reflection on the events passed. It felt that you were actually telling us a story as if it were a normal everyday conversation, and I really appreciate that with how personal your story was. Doubly so, your topic must not have been an easy one to talk about. I really enjoyed your speech, and I pray your father is well.

  5. I thought that this speech was my best one yet! However, I did not like the manuscript. I really like having a notecard, and not feeling like I have to say everything on the the piece of paper. I was actually really nervous for this speech because I did not feel I was prepared enough. I was really passionate about this topic and I did not want to mess it up. Honestly I thought my eye contact was not good and I looked at my paper too much. I thought that the audience could tell that I was passionate about my speech by facial expressions. Overall, I really enjoyed this speech and I am excited to continue to get better.

    1. Grace, it was even better the second time listening to it! You kept our attention by that passion you did have. In speeches, the progression from weak to strong or small to big really works well, and you used that to your advantage. I loved seeing how at the beginning of your speech you talked about how you felt that your faith was small and we got to see how it grew throughout the speech. The showing of your item was well placed as well. It was such an amazing story, I hope some day I will be blessed to enjoy an experience like you did. Very well done!

    2. Grace, you did a great job; your speech was my favorite. Your performance was very natural and orderly start to finish. When I listened to your speech, I hoped I could give mine as well as you did Your body language and tone were very appealing to me. I liked your story; your speech was amazing. Actually, you had very good eye content. I believe you will do the best!

    3. Grace you did a really nice job! I could tell that this was something that you were very passionate about and that really came through in your speech. I think you did a nice job with eye contact which is something that is hard to do with a manuscript . It was so cool tip hear you talk about your faith! Each of your speeches keep getting better and better! Keep up the good work!

    5. Grace, this speech was really touching and it really gave me goosebumps. To see how a trip like that changes you and your faith is really powerful. Its funny how God does things sometimes but I am glad that this trip really brought you closer in the faith with him. I do hope that you get to go back there and experience all that again. Overall with the speech I think you did a great job with eye contact, knowing your speech, and the flow of your speech. Great pauses and just a great speech overall!

    6. Grace! Your speech was really enjoyable to listen to. I have always wanted to go on a mission trip and now you have inspired me to want to go even more. I was evident you spent a lot of time writing, editing, and practicing for this speech. It was really neat to see how God changed your life over the course of a week! Even though this speech was manuscript you rarely looked down at your paper and made really good eye contact the entire time.

  6. Overall I thought my speech went pretty well. I felt confident because I had so much time to prepare and practice this speech. I knew right away I was going to do this speech on my monogram necklace because I truly treasure it! I was not a big fan of the manuscript because I lost my place on the page a couple times. I am still trying to figure out how to keep my rate steady and make better use of my pauses. I especially loved listening to these speeches because I learned something new about each of my classmates!

  8. Overall, I think my speech went pretty well. I was very calm and confident while I had the chance to have my manuscripts along with me. I think I did an excellent job to explain to classmates about what I treasured the most. My pace was good, I'm definitely getting better at not speaking too fast, which is also the result from practicing more often before the presentation. I will try to do a better job to make more eye contacts and make a better use of my pauses.

  9. Well I thought that this speech was okay. I really talking about me and my grandpa. I was really nervous about this speech for the reason that I thought nobody would be able to relate to my speech and I also thought that everybody would get board or not really care about my topic. But I thought overall this was a okay speech. I really enjoyed talking about my topic and why it means so much to me. But I was really nervous because of those reasons. I felt like my eye contact was good. Overall I thought this speech was just okay

    1. Tyler, I really enjoyed your speech. You seemed very passionate about your topic and you had a lot of good things to say. You made your speech easy to listen to with a nice pace and volume. There is still some room for improvement, but that's why we're in this class. I hope you continue to get better as the semester goes on.

  10. This was my least favorite speech by far. I didn't like the whole memorization part as, even though I knew my speech, I still felt inclined to look at the paper the entire time. I also lost track of where I was in my speech quite a bit and it was hard to get back. I feel like my eye contact got a little better and I remember actualy looking to the wings of the classroom. I'm also a little bummed that I couldn't think of or find anything that wasn't pertaining to music as that's what my last speech was on.

  11. I don't think was the best speech I presented, but I think it was my favorite. I know I don't like talking about myself, but my friends and this vacation is something I really hold close to my heart which made this speech a lot easier. It was kind of hard to explain to the class how special my friends are, because I couldn't cram 15 years into 4 minutes, just explain how much these people really mean to me. However, I think the manuscript was easier in the way that I could plan each specific word. On the other hand, my eye contact was worse. Now matter how many times I practiced, eye contact was difficult. Now that we are allowed to pick the methods for our next speech, I am unsure if I will use a manuscript because even if word choice is better, I know it hurts my eyecontact.

  12. This speech topic interested me initially, but after watching over my video, I realized that I missed a couple of things. First, I spoke too fast, probably because I was nervous. Secondly, my eye contact was off. I should have practiced more at home before giving the speech to the class. But overall, I enjoyed talking about my coins.

  13. I was disappointed in myself after this speech, because I did not prepare well. I think it was my favorite, since I had a lot of memories that I wanted to share with you. Jordan was a beautiful and amazing country, This memory will always exist in my heart. Although I wanted to do well, when I took out of my paper, I was too nervous to read it correctly. However, I thought my eye contact was not too bad. Actually, I was very depressed by this speech, I know I did poorly. Anyway, I will try to do a better job next time to make more eye contact and prepare better by more practice.

    1. Vicky, I liked this speech of yours. Your story was really interesting. After your speech, I wanted to travel to Jordan myself. I think you should add more detail in your story, focus on one story. Your voice was a little low. But other than those, it was a great speech!

  14. I think this speech went pretty good for me. I practiced several times so I wasn't as nervous. My eye contact wasn't as good as it could be so that's something that I can continue to work on. After I picked my topic the speech was pretty easy to write because my time at LAB is something I will always treasure. I feel like I could've improved on my gestures and I still need to work on my pace. Overall I really enjoyed these speeches! I liked the manuscript and it was enjoyable to learn more about my classmates. I look forward to the next speech.

    1. Cassie! I thought your speech was really enjoyable. It really made me want to go visit the camp you went to. I thought you used the manuscript very well. You still had good eye contact and I thought you had good gestures. 15. I think my speech was the best I had so far. I enjoyed talking about my little brother. I do not think my eye contact was that great but i think that might have been because of the manuscript. I did practice many times so i think that helped. The one thing, is i forgot my picture of my little brother. Other then that i think everything else was pretty good.

  16. I think I did pretty good on this speech. For me, this is my favorite speech so far. I spent a lot of time on the manuscript and try to make it as good as possible, and the final manuscript went really well. During the speech, I made a couple pronunciation mistake. Most of them are big long words which I’m not familiar with. I think next time I should avoid using those words. My rate is a little slow and my tone is not really lively. But the use of manuscript really made this speech easier for me to prepare.

  17. This speech was so easy. I'm glad I was able to think of something to talk about right away. The toughest part for me was trying to think of stories or things that happened before I got my necklace as well as after. I was happy with my final product. I approached with confidence and felt less nervous right away. This is one of my favorite speeches this year! Overall I think I did very well. I spoke slowly and clearly and gave more expression.

  18. Overall I think this speech went pretty well. There was a lack of eye contact a little when I started to hit the emotional part of the speech but I feel like I got my point across and kept my pace slow, loud and clear. It was a little different talking about something that was actually close to me and meant a lot to me but I feel like myself and the audience handled it great. Still things to improve on and touch up and I plan to take all the advice given to me into the next speech!

  19. I really enjoyed giving this speech. I felt prepared and comfortable, plus it was easy to talk about a topic I felt very close to at the time. My presentation wasn't the best, I feel as though I could have stood a little taller and spoken more clearly, but in the moment everything felt well executed. It meant a lot to talk about this topic and I hope I did it justice.
