Persuasive/Convincing Speech

Leave the link to your video in a comment below. Then write one well-written and thought-out paragraph to reflect on your speech. Use complete sentences and correct grammar. Upper class students should be writing paragraphs with compound and complex sentences that are a minimum of six sentences long.

You may comment on the following aspects as well:
  1. Was the class persuaded? Do you feel you were persuasive or convincing enough?
  2. Eye contact
  3. Nervousness
  4. Preparation--did you practice enough? Too much? How many video takes did you have to do?
  5. Speaking rate (too fast? too slow? too many pauses?)
  6. Gestures (Did you do any?)
  7. Poise and presence accurately captured via video?
  8. Organization--did your speech have a natural organization structure?
  9. Facial expressions?
  10. Dressed and groomed?
  11. Was the background appropriate and not distracting?
  12. What would you change if you could do it all over again?

In addition, leave feedback for at least three students. Feedback should be specific and original. It should be obvious that you watched the entire video.

I thought this speech went ok, but I have had better ones before. I should have practiced a couple extra times, and you could tell as it was a little choppy at some points. I tried to organize the speech as well as I could, and I thought I used a lot of different reasons to persuade the audience. I did something I haven't tried often, and that was include something that wasn't on the manuscript. When I was giving the speech and go the part about brass choir, I realized I didn't give much detail on it. I also saw that my time limit might not be met. So I talked a little freely on my experience in Brass Choir and it felt very natural talking without the script. I might have to try that in an upcoming speech.

    1. This is actually the first time I have heard you give a speech and I thought you are a very nice speaker! I did not realize all the benefits that playing an instrument had, I just thought it was all about having a passion for it. But you definitely taught me that it is so much more than that and I found it all very interesting. You had good facial expressions throughout and your voice was at a nice rate, not too fast or slow. At times I felt eye contact could have been stronger with the camera instead of right below it. Otherwise I enjoyed this speech and learned some new things!

    2. Nick I think your intros lately have been very good. I liked how you used your trumpets as a prop. I like how you used research and cited study's in your speech it showed that you put a lot of effort in. I think your facts were really a key factor in the persuasive part of your speech. The only thing i would say as a negative is you had a few stutters/pauses but they weren't that noticeable. I also thought you jumped around a little in your conclusions. Nice job overall.

    3. Nick, awesome intro! I completely agree with everything you said in this video. Everything was really smooth and easy to follow, and overall very enjoyable. My only problem with your speech was that I felt like you weren't looking at the camera enough. I can't wait to watch your next speech.

    4. Nick-
I think your tone was a little boring, BUT i liked your facts. DOnt take that wrong because I know my tone was really bad. You made a lot of good points. Like how its good for the brain. It made me wish I continued playing the piano. I was interested to keep listening to you. It was weird seeing you speak because I never have before. You make it seem pretty easy!

    5. Nick-
I tried to play a musical intrument before but didn't have the patience for it! I think I may have to try again after this speech! Your points were very good and I liked how simply you broke it all down for people, like me, to unsterstand. I think you did a very good job with being relaxed and making good eye contact.

I liked your speech, it was well prepared and very informative. You had many strong arguements supporting you topic and integrated them well. After watching this speech it actually made me want to pick up my guitar and start playing. So in conclusion, nice job!

    7. I liked your speech alot and you had some good facts to prove your point. The background was a bit distracting with the Ryan Braun poster. You completely proved your point of why everyone should play an instrument. You smoothly showed your visual aid. And you hand some nice hand gestures and good eye contact.

    8. NIck since this was my first time actually hearing you give a speech, I thought you did a great job! Its times like these especially after hearing your speech that i wish i could play a musical instrument. I really liked your intro. You were natural and knew the right facts for me atleast to be connected.

Out of all of our speeches so far, this was my least favorite. I felt that it was poorly written and presented.I did not like doing it over a webcam because I felt really awkward and I had no idea where to look. Also, being a perfectionist, I probably taped this speech 10 times before I finally got to tired to keep going. I think that having the opportunity to restart is what made me feel awkward and uncomfortable. On the other hand, I think I sound pretty excited and enthusiastic about my topic so hopefully that will make up for my awkwardness. I am not very confident on how this speech went but I know that doing a speech over the internet will come in handy for the future!

    1. For being your first time talking into the computer, I thought you did a great job with this speech Katelyn! Even if you felt a little uncomfortable talking into the computer instead of a crowd, you did a nice job keeping eye contact with the screen and it had a good flow to it. I enjoyed the topic and you were very prepared with your info and stats. You are a very good speaker and I look forward to your upcoming speeches!

    2. Katelyn, the first thing I noticed about this speech was how well you kept eye contact. I felt like you were really talking to me the entire time. You had a great flow and seemed not only enthusiastic, but confident! You really knew your facts about recycling and I know that I will continue to make sure that I recycle the proper way.

    3. I really enjoyed your speech again Katelyn. Like all your other ones I connected to this speech. I also thought that your eye contact was good. I will agree it was a very uncomfortable experience and I hope I never have to do that. You persuaded me to keep recycling.

    1. This was a very awkward speech for me. I did not enjoy this speech at all like I have my other ones. It was a very strange process for me to adjust to. I shot myself many times to try and please myself with a take, but that never happened. The chosen video was my best out of all the takes, but I quickly realized that this one also has its faults as I have a verbal slip up right off the bat. As far as preparation it was not the same as the other speeches. It was not exactly fun to research or fun to think of ways to present. Despite my lack of real enthusiasm, I did try my best to be as convincing and researched as possible, but I feel like my points were not always as clear as they should of been.

    2. Trevor, another very good speech. I thought for sure this speech would be football related, but I still enjoyed it. I will be honest and say I am guilty of checking my phone a lot espically when I feel a little awkward in public and want to make it look like I am doing something. I agree that cell phones are depriving us of valueable free time. It is so easy to get caught up checking for phone for something really fast for homework, and having that turn into you checking your Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, etc. This causes us to not only produce lesser quality work because we are distracted, but it also takes us much longer to complete our task. Your points were very good, and you had great gestures!

      Delete
    3. Trevor-
I really liked this speech. This speech made me realize how much i actually depend on my phone everyday. Now i am currently trying to use it less and be more interactive with other people. You brought up very good points and were very convincing, so in conclusion nice job bro!

    4. You seem completely comfortable immediatly and have a good intro. I agree with you Trevor people can't go anywhere without there phone and cant be off it for five minutes. Good point with people don't need to be connected 24/7. You carry out good eye contact throughout your speech. You gave me a good laugh with the story of the girl who walked into the open man whole. Smooth and simple comclusion but the video ended before you were done speaking.

    5. I really liked your speech Trevor, you related well to all of us, because it's safe to say all of us get distracted by our phones... even in speech class (crazy I know.) Your hand gestures were good as always. Only thing I would say is that you say "and now" when your changing topics, nothing wrong with that, you just tend to say it a lot. Overall great speech!

I will be honest, I had the most trouble witht this speech. It was very difficult to choose where and how to film this speech. Also, I felt I was a little extra nervous because of there being no feedback. Even in an online interview for a job, you will have some feedback. It took me a number of tries to get the right video. I made a lot of errors that I did not want in my speech. I did some gestures, but I do not think that any of them showed up because the camera didn't get my hands. This was not my best speech, but I do think I convinced most people. Finally, I believe that my backround was pretty welcoming and did not distract too much.

    1. Kyle I think your topic was a good one, it is definitely one I would have never thought of. It is so relevant to our lives today with how common technology is. I agree with you in that it is not appropriate for teachers and students to be friends because that can cause some bad results. Your solutions to this problem were outside of the box, too. They were solutions that made it so that everybody wins. The only thing I noticed was that your eye contact at times was not into the camera, it was more downwards. Also the gestures were not there, but like you said the camera did not get your hands. Your voice and rate were good and you also had some nice facial expressions. I think you did a nice job and picked a thought out topic.

      Delete
    2. This was definitely an interesting topic to select. I know I never would of thought of speaking on it. You spoke in a calm and collected manner which was good, but you were a little soft spoken. The other thing that I noticed, but I'm sure everyone struggled with, was eye contact. Overall I enjoyed your speech and thought your final ideas were clever.

    3. I always enjoy watching your speeches Kyle. You are such a great speaker, and you can still tell that even when talking into a computer. You showed great eye contact throughout the speech. I thought this was also a great topic choice, as it is very relevant to kids in the modern internet age. Its okay that you didn't have the hand gestures, as I am sure you will fix the camera next time so we can see them. Great work buddy!

    4. I could tell immediatly that you were not comfortable and did not enjopy doing this speech. Good professional background. You struggled with eye contact but tried your best to make it. 1. I liked your topic of the marrow transplant. This is something that everyone can relate to. We never know if someone we love or even if we ourselves will need this operation done. One thing that I noticed during your speech, was that at the start of it you seemed very tense. This made it a little more difficult to connect, but as the speech rolled on it seemed that you overcame this and finished much stronger then you began.

    2. Cyrus, I liked your speech and I think that it is very important to listen to this speech because there are many people depending on donors to save their life. I think that you did a good job and that you had good volume. It looked like you were reading off something the whole time considering that you had very little eye contact. You seemed really tense during the whole thing and I think that you could have been a little more relaxed because it made it hard for me to relax and listen as I watched your speech. Also, your gestures seemed a little too forced. I think that you did good facial expressions. In conclusion, your speech was very good and I thought that all the information was important to know. Good job!

    3. I thought that you picked a unique, yet relatable topic for all of us to understand. You did a great job delivering the speech and giving good eye contact. You made the speech feel lie you were talking directly to us. You definitely are becoming a great speaker. Great job!

This was a very different speech for me. I did not find it comfortable or easy to talk to the camera. It was also different because I didn't know were to put my paper and then have to then glance at the camera to. Overall, I actually prefer to do a live speech better ten a filmed one.

Nope. No thank you. Not a good speech. I did it over 17 times and on the last take I screwed up and said that gays should be allowed to vote. I did well on the rest of the speech so I kept it because I couldn't do it any longer. I didn't know if I should stand or sit but after numerous takes I sat down because there was no where to put my camera that didn't make me look like a giant and looking down on everyone. Obviously I wasn't nervous, but that didn't really help at all. I was so stressed out about getting the video uploaded, it took 8.5 hours, hence why I'm writing this at 7 A.M. I would have taken the nerves over the stress any day. My gestures went well and I think I really sold it except for the gay voting thing. If I had to do it all over again, I'd probably find a way to upload it faster, and find a way to look at the camera and then back at my paper in a not so obvious way!

    1. Megan like always I really enjoyed listening to your speech. Even though I wasn't there, through the video I could just see how passionate you were for this topic by your facial expressions, tone of your voice, and gestures. I completely agree with you on this topic and I think it was really good of you to incorporate the Christian aspect of it because that really relates to all of us and definitely changed my view on the way to look at this topic. At times I could tell you would stutter and kind of lose your wording, but you never failed to get back into it and bring back all the passion you had before. I think you did really good on this one!

    2. Megan- I loved your speech. You didn't sound awkward at all! You brought up some great points with the economy and foster children. I had never really sat down and thought about the amount of children who cannot be adopted when there are people in this country that are willing to adopt them. That is crazy to think about. I loved your passion on this topic and your eye contact was a lot better than mine. Thank you for informing me and convincing me to support gay rights.

Holy passion meggy! This was definitely my favorite speech. I know that this is something that you are very passionate about. I loved all of your examples, such as the diet and the donut and also the bible verse. You had a lot of surprising facts! I had no idea that New Hampshire was the first state to legalize gay marriage and also that 3 out of 10 teen suicides are because of sexual orientation. Your speeches are consistently wonderful. Your eye contact, gestures, and tone of voice were excellent! The only thing I noticed was that you lost your train of thought a few times, but you covered it up and fixed it well! Good job!

    1. I personally enjoyed this speech as I enjoy watching mma. I found it interesting to get a history of it as well. One thing that you did well during this speech was that you kept good eye contact throughout your speech. The two things that I noticed that I thought could of been improved a little bit was the volume that you spoke at, and the one comparison you had between mma and the Colosseum. It was difficult to hear your speech even with the volume all the way up and the comparison to the Colosseum is most likely not helpful to persuade your audience that mma is not barbaric. Overall I enjoyed your speech.

    1. This speech was rough. I was a lot more calm giving this speech, which also slowed down my rate of speaking. I feel that I could have practiced a lot more. I felt very rushed and pressed for time, and that is why I lost my place and had poor eye contact. I do not have a computer that I could use for this, so that is why my video is so shaky. Overall, I think that I had a lot more passion in this speech but I lacked in many of the other areas.

    2. I feel this was the worst job on a speech that I have done yet. I did not really feel comfortable and I did not like the fact that my eye contact had to constantly be into the camera. I like in person the fact I can look at others and sense the reaction that our class is having to my speech. My eye contact was also limited and gestures were barely existent. I was not nervous at all which was good, but the tone of my voice sounds otherwise. I started talking really fast and couldn't seem to catch my breath at some parts. I should have practiced more out loud and I wish I would have. My outfit was not exactly dressed up either, that could have used some work. I do think this was a good experience, but definitely was not my best work. I just could not get into it knowing the fact I was being taped without classmates there.

    3. Hailey- I liked the way that you used all of the statistics that you had in your speech. I also liked the way that everything tied together in your speech. You kept a nice constant pace throughout. I could tell that you were trying to give good eye contact, but I know that it is hard when you have a manuscript and a camera in your face. 1. Troy- I thought your speech was a little rough. First of all your intro was dull and it felt like you were just reading facts out of a book. It didn't really seem to me that you had much enthusiasm or interest in your topic. 1. Mady- Yours was short, sweet, and to the point. I liked the way that you tied in an actual story that was close to your heart (I am sorry for your loss). Your pace and eye contact were great throughout. The only thing that I would have clarified more would be the age at which someone is considered elderly. Other than that, I think this was one of your best speeches. You seemed prepared and you did not pause or loose your place. This was my favorite speech that you have given.

    2. Mady: I really liked your speech. I thought it was short but you got to all the points that you wanted to get to. I really liked how you incorporated the story about the little girl because since it was really sad, it automatically convinced me and changed my way of thinking on elderly drivers. I think you did this so easily because it is a story about a person that you knew showing how this is a problem and may affect us some day. I am sorry about the little girl's death. I think that your pace was good and your eye contact was good also. It looked like you had your speech memorized and that you felt really comfortable giving it. You seemed well prepared although your face expressions were few. I think that your speech was very organized and that you knew what you wanted the audience to get out of your speech. In general, you did a good job as always.

Even though your speech did not meet the requirment of time ithought in the amount of time you used was still a good amount of time to do your speech in you still got the point across. I do belive the old people need too retake there tests often becuase you never know what could happen. Just like the little girl that was killed old people have slower reactions. So i really strongly agree with your speech and that it was a good topic. You seem very natural and had good eyecontact.

I also like how casual you made the speech, and the biblical references you added. My first critique for you is that your background is quite distracting with the bright light in the side of the shot. My second critique is that you should look into the camera more often and for longer periods of time.

    2. Nick, I knew that your speech was going to be hilarious and interesting to watch. I really liked it and I liked all the good points that you made on why you think aliens aren't real. You had good volume but I thought that your eye contact could have been better. I liked how you made it very clear with all your points since you numbered them as you explained each one. I liked how "chill" you were as you gave it and how you spoke in a relaxed way because it made my forget that it was a speech and I was very interested in just hearing what else you had to say. You were very funny and you had me laughing through the whole thing. I think that you could have chosen a less distracting background though. I liked your introduction considering that you went right into it but toward the end of it, I started getting confused and I think that you went on it too long. In conclusion, I think this is one of the best speeches that you have done, and I really liked it.

    1. This speech I thought was the most difficult. I thought that having the chance to do it over and over again would be helpful, but the more times I recorded it, the more things I forgot. I also did this right after I got home from St. Louis so I was extremely tired which probably is part of the reason I was doing worse the later I stayed up. I spent too much time focusing on what background I should have, and I still don't know if my background was good or not. Eye contact could have been worse, but also could have been a lot better. I tried to stay enthusiastic at which I think I did an okay job. Overall, I would choose to do any other type of speech before I would choose to do this one again.

    1. Brandin- I thought your speech was good, you had some good points. Your background was really distracting, especially when the screen would move and the changing light colors. You had a good pace with your voice, and good enthusiasm and facial expressions. You seem to have a definite opinion on the subject and you picked a good topic!

    2. I liked your opener, very funny and very corny, (but good.) You seemed to know what you were talking about especially about the amendments. I also liked how you talked about your personal experiences with guns I think it really made you seem more knowledgeable in the topic. You went pretty far over the time limit, but overall I think this was your best speech yet.

  20. Alexis- myself:
I did not like this speech one bit. I felt so awkward and uncomfortable. I didn't feel like I could grab anyones attention being on a screen. Yes it is nerve wrecking being in front of an audience, but I'd rather see peoples reaction in person then find out later or never know. Personally I felt crappy giving a speech in front of just a camera only. I liked my topic but was not a fan of how i delivered it. I know my gestures were pretty bad. Over all i was not a fan.

I did not like doing this speech. I felt awkward filming myself as I gave my speech and I honestly would have prefered to do it in front of the class. I found myself making more mistakes in my video as compared on if I would have just done it once in front of an audience. I think that I did a poor job on persuading because my face and voice were really boring during the whole thing. I think that my eye contact was okay although it was awkward to stare at the camera. I was not nervous at all because there was no reason to be since I was alone. I did practice but I don't think that I practiced enough. I probably did around ten video takes until I did one that I felt I did okay on. I think that I spoke at a good pace and I tried to use gestures but I could have used more. I think that for the most part I stood up nice and tall and I was dressed okay. My speech could have been organized better and it could have had more convincing information. I feel that my face was blank the whole time so I know that I could still work on my facial expressions. I think that my background was fine because it was just one color. If I could do this speech again I would try to be more relaxed while giving it and not make it look like I am over thinking the whole thing. In conclusion, I didn't like this speech and I am disappointed in how I gave it.

This speech was a little rough for me. I spent more time on it then any of my other speeches yet i wasn't able to get more then 4 and a half minutes. On the positive side I thought my introduction was one of my better ones and my conclusion wasn't bad but maybe a bit short. I thought I struggled transitioning from point to point and it may have seemed like I was jumping back and forth at some points. In conclusion It was a tough speech.

  23. I struggle with this speech tremendously. I had a hard time making eye contact and just being motivatewd to make it ionteresting and speak like im excied to give it. My background is really dark and it wasn't when I first tested it out so Im not sure why that happened. Alot of what a said didn't flow togather how it did to me when I first wrote it and then watched it. As I look bacvk on it I definetly need to work of speaking to the camera and acting more natural infront of it.

  24. This speech was a challenge for me! It took me about 8 times to finailly get it done all the way through with out laughing or just staring blankly at the camera. I had a rough time trying to make eye contact. I definantly did not make that much eye contact. I also, even though i was sitting i still felt myself swaying. I guess I just naturally do it when im nervous or something. When i watched my video I realized i could of worded som things differently to make them flow better and have it more natural.

  25. Trevor- Your speech was very interesting. You talking about cellphones and the dangers of texting and not paying attention to what's in front of me makes me think twice before I pull out my phone and text. You had good eye contact, you spoke at a good pace, and you had a few good hand gestures. Overall, I enjoyed watching your speech.
Nick- I liked your speech. I loved your introduction, you had great eye contact, good tone, you had very good hand gestures, and I love that you listed a few bible verses. The background was a bit distracting but the speech was great.
Chance- You picked a good topic. I loved that you listed a few of the traditions that college football teams do before or during a game. You had a great tone, although you lost your place for a little bit in the beginning. Even though you scratched the microphone with your paper, your speech was good nonetheless.

  26. I did a bad job on this speech. I was a little vague on the whole speech but I think i did a good job at the steady pace, decent eye contact and a very good idea. I think I could have done better if I would have done a better time organizing it. I think overall I did fair it wasn't my best speech but it wasn't my worst.

Nick- I think your speech was very funny, it seemed like u were high but I don't care it was hilarious.i didn't really care how good or bad you did it was just funny as heck.

Chance- You did a great job chance. I like how you did not hesitate as much as many others did. I like who you tied the football theme into this speech. overall I think u did a great job.

Brandy- I think you were very nervous when you did this speech because you were hesitant, but hey there is always room for improvement.and over all you did a better job than mine so you know that means something.

  27. I didnt enjoy this speech as much as i origianlly thought. It actually was a big pain setting up everything like where to film, good lighting, and uploading to youtube. I must say though I wasnt as stressed out as i normaly am before a do a speech just becasue if you screw up you can stop filming and start over. All in all i thought that my speech went well although i was really tired when i filmed it, and I felt i made bad eye contact but had good enunciation, and I say so myself i thought i was pretty pursuasive

Abbi- I really felt like i learned something while watching you video although I personally didnt connect to it but thats because i have never gone to a tanning salon also you seemed less than enthusiastic about giving this speech. But on the bright side i thought you made good eye contact and your speech was good becasue you added a true personal story to it

Cyrus i liked your speech becasue not only were you enthusiastic about bone marrow transplants, but you had good gestures along with a background that wasnt distracting and when you said you be in pain for a couple of days.. isnt that swell i got a nice chuckle out of it

Chance i did like your speech mainly becasue i like college football but your eye contact wasnt really great becasue you were looking down most of the time and at the begining of your speech you seemed to be rushing a bit idk might just be me but no lie i jumped when your mic made that loud noise at 1:33 overall i thought it was a good speech
