Informative Speech

Write one well-written and thought-out paragraph. Use complete sentences and correct grammar. Upper class students should be writing paragraphs with compound and complex sentences that are a minimum of six sentences long. Please specifically comment on your introduction, conclusion, and visual aid. For your introduction--did you cover the four points of a good introduction? Conclusion--solid? Are all three parts included? Visual aid-seamless? Did you read off of it or was it an incorporated part of your speech?

In addition, you may comment on the following aspects as well:
  1. Eye Contact
  2. Nervousness
  3. Audience Feedback
  4. Preparation--did you practice enough? Too much?
  5. Speaking rate (too fast? too slow? too many pauses?)
  6. Gestures (Did you do any?)
  7. Poise and Presence
  8. Organization
  9. Facial Expressions
  10. Dressed and groomed?
  11. Outline/Note Cards/Manuscript

What went well? What do you need to work on for the next speech? Be as specific as possible!

In addition, leave feedback for at least two students. Feedback should be specific and original

I enjoyed this speech because it was somewhat personal to me and I related to it very well! Due to the longer time limit, I sometimes stumbled a bit on words but I believe that I did okay! For this speech, I chose to write an outline because it allowed me to mix things up a little bit. Also, for me, using an outline makes it easier to maintain good eye contact with the audience. I changed my topic for this speech sort of last minute but I felt that it was for the best because with this topic, I could properly inform the audience of what I believed. Overall, I think I spoke decently and delivered this speech acceptably.

    1. I'm not sure if the rubric was the same for you or not. Overall for never hearing one of your speeches before, I thought you had a good rate and interesting topic. You had a good intro as well.

  2. I thought that your speech was very well done. I learned a lot and I thought the topic was good. You had a really good conclusion and eye contact with the camera.

    1. Max, I thought your speech was phenomenal! But seriously, you looked very natural speaking up there for such a long time. Your slide show was also very good, and it helped illustrate the points you were making. Obviously you knew a lot about this topic and it seemed like you felt strongly about it! I was interested the whole time and by the end of it, I was very informed.

Ethan, I also very enjoyed your speech! Being a football player, I related to your topic well! It also seemed like you knew a lot about this topic and it was shown clearly. I liked all the pictures you had too! They helped give me a good idea of the style of helmets worn by some of the first football players. You also spoke very well with a very minimal amount of stutters and "ums". Overall, a very well done speech!

  4. This was an interesting speech for me. My topic (curling) was one that I didn't really know about previously. Working the powerpoint and video seemed to be an obstacle for me and might have taken away some of the focus from my speech. I thought that my intro was a little bit shaky to say the least, but I think that i settled in father along the way. My eye contact could have been a little better, but I think my tone was alright. If I were to redo this speech I would try to make the boring topic a little more interesting.

    1. I learned a lot from your speech. I think this speech was difficult to have good eye contact because we needed to present a lot of information. I liked your beginning with the skates.

    2. I embarrassingly did not know that the video you showed was actually curling. I did find your introduction hilarious. You always find a way to crack me up. Eye contact and poise seemed to be strong as usual. I know the next one will be a great one since it is persuasive. Nice job.

    3. Your speech was very good. It was very funny and entertaining. it also informed me a huge amount about curling and your curling rock was one of the greatest visual aids I've ever seen.

    4. I love your speech!!! It was very funny and very interesting. I have never heard about anything called curling before and now, I do. Great Speech!!!

  5. I think that this was my best speech so far. I spent the most time preparing for this speech compared to all others probably combined. I ended up writing a manuscript. I did not plan on doing that but it worked out to be easier. I thought that my speech flowed smoothly and my visual aids were good. I think that my eye contact could have been better. My conclusion was a little short too. I also think some people were a little bored because they did not care about my topic.

    1. Matt,
Your speech actually immediately got my attention, because I have a younger brother at home who is obsessed with disc golf. So, I thought that your speech was quite interesting, and I was able to learn a lot about a topic I did not know much about. In your speech you informed everyone very well about your topic and you seemed very prepared. Something that I think you should work on just a bit more is your eye contact and gestures, but other than that great job!

    2. I already know you love frolfing. It is a very interesting and fun sport to partake in. I learned a lot of new information about it too. I do agree it was your best one so far. I enjoyed all the great details you put into it. Nice job.

    3. Matt, I really liked what you were doing, you most defiantly had the right idea. I personally enjoy 1) a nice pair of slacks. and 2) a nice game of frolf. I felt like you were confident up there and you knew what you were talking about. I also enjoyed the visual aids.

    4. Winter Fresh this was one of my favs for your speeches. I think you presented the info in a logical way where even someone who never has played frolfing before would be able to understand the information. For some reason I agree that the manuscript is a nice way to go. Your eye contact and tone were on point, and your speech went smoothly. Like what you're doin, right idea.

    5. Being a disc golfer I thought you did really well with all the info. Although I did know pretty much all of it, I felt that what you said was spot on. Good job!!

  6. For my Informative Speech I thought that it went alright, and that it was actually quite fun to do. In this speech I felt pretty confident and was very comfortable when giving it. When I began my speech with my introduction, I believe I got everyone’s attention, but I stumbled on the words a bit, so maybe I needed to practice on my introduction a bit more. During my informative speech, I was able to keep more eye contact because I had note cards, and I did my best to have hand gestures. In my conclusion, I did not stubble, but it may have been a bit rushed since I was going to pass the time limit. The reason for going slightly over the time limit was not really practicing with the video in my speech. Next, time I will have to make sure to practice the speech how I am going to present it in class. On my visual aids I spent a lot of time putting it together, and in the end I thought they turned out pretty well and that they were able to fully display Chinese opera. In total, this speech went quite well, and I was able to learn a lot more about Chinese opera from doing the speech.

    1. I loved your speech with the great history and details you put into it. I am not much of an opera guy, but I found it to be interesting. I do agree that eye contact and your confidence was stellar. Overall, I felt it was one of the best you have done. Great job!

    2. I really enjoy your speech. I have heard of Chinese Opera, and it is kind of cool to know more of it. By sides, I love the Monkey King!!! :)

    3. I think you did an excellent job. It was an extremely fascinating topic and I can tell it's something you're definitely well-informed about. You maintained some good composure and eye contact as well.

  7. Well then.....this was a pain. I am a very vocal person about my religious beliefs - especially at work vs. those who do not care much. Anytime I have to look down at an item, it always throws off my rhythm. I would have hoped to use the clicker and I could have moved around the room more which would have been easier for me. However, I was limited to a confined area which did not make me feel comfortable and my slides would not move. It also did not help to be a Monday morning which had me be a bit more tired than usual. This was not one of my best or favorite. I do know the next one will be better. Be prepared!

    3. Don't worry about it too much- I think you did pretty well. I always admire it when people are passionate about their beliefs and can adequately back them up. However, I do believe you could have spoken a little bit more- the video composed a big chunk of your speech.

  8. I felt that my speech went fine. I enjoyed talking about my topic and doing the research and was glad I didn't butcher all of the names. My intro and conclusion were lacking along with my eye contact, but other than that it was great.

    3. Hey Nick, your speeches seem to improve every single time. I thought that your info was interesting, especially with nintendo being my favorite gaming system. I thought though that you could have maybe cut out some of the info cuz I think the speech was a little long, but in the end I'd rather have a longer speech than a shorter speech! Also, your eye contact and flow seem to be getting better as well. noiceeee. Oh yeah and Max Hoffman is a joke.^^^^^

  9. I feel that my speech went pretty well, except the time and the videos is have some trouble in the loading and...I HATE ADVERTISEMENTS (but the baby was cute)!!! I mostly did not do any research, but luckily, not any of you guys felt boring...i hope. It felt much more stress when you have the camera in front of your face, although Sherry helped me a lot when she agreed to listen to my speech, but...CAMERA is my ENEMY. I hope that after my speech, more of you guys will listen to K.pop :)))

    1. Bao,
I thought that your speech was really good, and I truly enjoyed your topic. I personally am into K-pop, but recently I have not listened to K-pop for a while, so it was quite interesting to hear about the biggest hits. Something you should work on a little is your hand gestures, but other than that you had great confidence, and you had good eye contact.

    2. I am also a fan of K-pop, I once was really into surper junior, I think you includes a lot in your speech, and I really liked to listen to your speech. However, for the video that you showed, I think you should make it shorter.

  10. This was definitely not one of my best speeches. I think that I didn't meet the time requirement and my eye contact was lacking. When I got to my conclusion, my mind just blanked and it ended up being terrible. I absolutely loved my topic and researching it though. I hope I taught everyone a little bit about TaeKwonDo. Overall, this speech was alright. I still have a lot to work on.

  11. I thought my speech went alright. I didn't think it was great but it wasn't horrible. Talking about shot put was pretty easy to do since I'm in the sport, and it was interesting to do some research on it. Though I felt that I lacked eye contact, and could have used the power point to my advantage during the speech, as in being more interactive. The organization of my topics and general knowledge probably helped me out the most.Overall this speech for me was mediocre.

  12. I was actually a little excited to do this speech. although, there is so much to talk about the brain, that it was difficult to fit in all of the information. Initially when I started, I was nervous as always ,but I was also really excited. This time I preferred to use an outline over a manuscript, to maintain eye contact and be able to do the demonstrations. After the first demonstration I thought it was really fascinating to see everyone's expressions after I did each demonstration, some were completely amazed, some felt weird, and others had no clue what was going on. Which is of course okay, because it really demonstrated how all people think differently. Of course in my speech there were flaws. To begin with, going back a slide was the worst mistake in my entire speech, it took time out of the original speech time, and I should have just continued, in addition to that, I couldn't stop talking about the brain section, I guess my enthusiasm got the best of me, and finally, I completely rushed through the last section. Overall, I believe I did my best, and can only hope to improve.

    1. Chris I really liked your speech. All of your speeches have been interesting and informative, but this took interesting to a new level with your examples of illusions involving the audience.

    2. I also was delighted to be involved in your speech. I really learned a lot about allusions and the like. You are one of the main speakers in our class that I can't wait to hear. Keep up the good work.

  13. This was one of my favorite speeches. I was pretty nervous to present and it really showed in the first minute of my speech. I started out stuttering on almost every other word which didn't make me feel very confident. After I powered through the nerves I started to really get into my speech. I felt pretty strongly about my topic and really enjoyed presenting it. The freedom of having note cards instead of a manuscript helped having better eye contact. Over-all I think after the introduction it turned out to be a pretty solid speech.

I also thought you were very professional when you spoke, and you appeared to know exactly what you were talking about. In addition I thought you had wonderful eye contact and along with your professionalism you added character to it, which made very enjoyable to watch.

  14. This speech was very shaky for me. I wasn't comfortable with it from the start, and by the time I was in front of the class to speak, I was not feeling right either. My topic was a bit unusual to try and narrow and made it sound awkward and vague. My intro and conclusion were very poor and my visuals seemed a bit simple. Overall, this was my least favorite speech.

  15. This speech went ok for me, I was so nervous about the speech before. When I practice my speech, it is just about 8 minutes, I was worried about the timing during my speech. My eye contact is better than last one, I tried to look all around the room. My introduction is good I think, And I think my conclusion is ok for everyone to know it is the end of the speech. I really spent a lot time to make my power point, and I think it is not bad for me. And I really recommend everyone to watch Korean drama.

  16. Ok this speech I felt went very well. From all the research I did I felt like I knew a lot about this, and being a football player I had a pretty good knowledge for it already. I feel like using an outline is best for me but I also feel like it is hard to have an outline and have good eye contact. Overall I really enjoyed this speech and it might have been my favorite one.

  17. I'm extremely disappointed in myself yet again. I wasn't prepared and I completed it about 3 days before actually presenting it. I should have compiled a works cited page and I forgot all about the conclusion. I think that I was definitely more confident, however, so that's a decent improvement.

  18. I didn't like how my speech went this time. I changed my intro a lot the night before and added in those videos too. I could have practiced the new intro more and maybe left out a video, even though I liked those video from that series. I knew the information that I wanted to present but after stumbling on my intro it kinda went down hill from there. I skipped over some important info which I think made other sections confusing and not make sense.

  19. I enjoyed this speech very much. It was a speech where I could express the thing I liked most. It was fairly easy in my opinion and I think my eye contact and gestures were done pretty well. What I might have done differently is getting more information on some topics I talked about because I felt that some people still didn't understand what I was talking about.

Seth: I enjoyed your speech very much. You always come up to the podium and deliver a good speech

Anton: I believe you have more potential than you think. All you need is more practice of self confidence and I think you will be an excellent speaker one day.
