Persuasive/Convincing Speech

Leave the link to your video in a comment below. Then write one well-written and thought-out paragraph to reflect on your speech. Use complete sentences and correct grammar. Upper class students should be writing paragraphs with compound and complex sentences that are a minimum of six sentences long.

You may comment on the following aspects as well:
  1. Was the class persuaded? Do you feel you were persuasive or convincing enough?
  2. Eye contact
  3. Nervousness
  4. Preparation--did you practice enough? Too much? How many video takes did you have to do?
  5. Speaking rate (too fast? too slow? too many pauses?)
  6. Gestures (Did you do any?)
  7. Poise and presence accurately captured via video?
  8. Organization--did your speech have a natural organization structure?
  9. Facial expressions?
  10. Dressed and groomed?
  11. Was the background appropriate and not distracting?
  12. What would you change if you could do it all over again?

In addition, leave feedback for at least three students. Feedback should be specific and original. It should be obvious that you watched the entire video.

I think this speech went all right! I was pretty prepared for this speech with a long outline, so I was able to make the time requirement. Honestly, I felt pretty passionate about this topic and I hope that was obvious in my speech! I also believe this topic can relate well with high schoolers. I stuttered a few times but I really tried my best to push past my mistakes! Additionally, I remembered to dress up for this speech so that's always a bonus! And I incorporated some visual aids as well.

    2. Your topic was relatable and your introduction caught my attention right away. You also seemed to have decent credibility. It is obvious that you did plenty of research. I liked your connection back to Martin Luther about the CEO running the double iron man. It was easy to relate to as this was a familiar subject. Nicely done!

First of all, I did this one time, so thats good. Secondly, I think I did really well on this speech. I was able to stay on topic and follow the outline for a persuasive speech. I also incorporated sources and quotes which were beneficial in getting my opinion and points across. I feel that I did a good job with eye contact, although i probably could have spoken a little slower. Overall, I feel very passionate about the topic, although i would have rather had a two-sided discussion or debate than given a speech. But, in the end, I feel that my speech turned out great.

Your eye contact was very good and you delivered this speech well. Very rarely did you stumble on your words at all! I also felt very informed and persuaded at the end of the speech! I think this was a very effective and believable viewpoint on the topic. Nice job Andrew!

    2. I loved the topic you chose. I am a huge political person and completely agree with the details in your speech. I connected to the speech completely. I make minimum wage and heck I would definitely not enjoy risking getting fired to make 2 more dollars an hour. The details you pulled off were spot on. Your eye contact, intro, and conclusion were great! Nice job.

    3. You did pretty well on this speech. You seemed to be pretty informed and all your arguments didn't seemed to be fallacious or questionable. You also maintained some good eye contact, and you didn't stumble when you spoke. I disagree with your opinion, but a discussion of this nature isn't appropriate for now ;)

    4. Your topic is really controversy and interesting nowadays. your arguments are clear enough to understand. Meanwhile, I realized that you took a lot of examples and statistics from some institution such as Forbs. It is persuasive. I like your eye contact and your speaking speed. Well Done!

I loved doing this speech. I am glad I basically did this in front of a camera without getting up in front of an audience. I felt smooth and confident through the entire speech. Eye contact was good because obviously I am looking at a camera. In addition, it was quite easy uploading the video. Also, I felt my introduction was pretty good. I hope everyone loves the speech. My topic is somewhat kid-like, but how can you not enjoy it?!?

Very good speech!

I thought my intro was solid. I really like the facts I gave in it. My information was solid and I like the way it came out. My topic is something that I've enjoyed for a while. Space adventure is a large part of my life and seeing my idea actually come true would be amazing. I really like video taping my speech, I was able to restart my speech when I said something wrong or something I didn't like. I think I restarted just during my intro alone like 20 times.

  5. This speech was alright. I think that I was almost less nervous in front of an audience. Constantly I had to remind myself to slow down and speak clearly. Despite my numerous failed attempts, I think that I came out with a decent product. Using the topic became difficult to expand on eventually. Just as I had a finished product of a speech, I rewatched the video and noticed I was not dressed up and had to redo the thing all over again. In the end, that was probably a benefit as it gave me another opportunity to practice it. All in all, this definitely was not my favorite speech, but I survived.

This is by far my least favorite speech, when I control the situation in which I give a speech my confidence is replaced with control and I can't get through a speech easily. I had poor eye contact and had trouble maintaining my theme I am just glad this is over with.

Although I felt much more prepared for this speech and practiced plenty, I hate hearing my own voice. I struggled over every mistake and retried this speech way too many times. I was excited to do this topic, but found out that I had made it two minutes too short, then had to go back and find a filler. My eye contact was poor because I was using a manuscript and I was shivering because heating does not exist in my house. I also had difficulty finding a quiet place to present. I ended up giving in and allowing my mom's (loud) entrance to go in the video because I was so tired of starting over. Over all, a very frustrating video for a perfectionist... but at least I felt comfortable with my topic!

I feel really strongly about my topic and I probably could've talked about it for hours but I had to condense and just hit the main points. This is probably my favorite way to give a speech because I'm not in front of everyone and I was wearing sweatpants. Hiding behind the computer screen was really helpful for staying relaxed. I think this was one of my stronger speeches. My eye contact was pretty good seeing as I just had to stare at the camera the whole time. I probably could've done more gestures and had a stronger conclusion but I'm thankful to be done.

I truly enjoyed watching and listening to your speech. Though it was funny, you were very confident, passionate, had good information, and great eye contact. You also had gestures which I did not see in many speeches. One thing that you should work on for next time, is not going monotone, you don't do it the entire time, but it does happen and listeners can drift away from listening to you. In conclusion, your speech was very smooth, and it was very good!

Well, this was very difficult for me to do,mostly because it was torture to have to listen to my voice, in addition to that, it was also very difficult to figure out where to put my outline since I had to record my speech with an ipad. I also found it very awkward trying to handle a mic around, since my ipad mic had difficulties hearing me. I definitely prefer live audience speeches only because it is much less of a hassle, and I feel a lot more confident about those then I do about this speech. I feel that this speech was a complete disaster and with every re-do I felt it kept getting worse. I re-recorded this like 8 times and finally just gave up because I couldn't bare to hear my voice anymore. I hope that I wont have to to this any time soon, because, it was very challenging for me.

The graphics that you showed in the video actually were really helpful in painting a picture for this topic. I'd have to agree with you that sometimes people who are involved with mass shootings are wrongly assumed to be playing violent video games, and I think that the general public needs to see that there are other reasons to why someone would do these horrible crimes like a mental illness or depression. It felt a lot different talking to myself alone in my room, but also more comftorable since I can try as many times as I want to get it right. I think i did fairly well on my info and the points I made to back up my main point. It was a little weird to make eyecontact with the tiny frontcam up my phone, but I did my best! I also think that its not as powerful to just move your eyes from your paper to the phone, compared to looking down at your paper in front of an audience, and looking up at them to make eye contact. Overall I am content with this speech and am looking forward to seeing everyone elses!

This is Anton here. I'm posting from a "professional" google account. Let's just say my normal youtube account has some... umm. crude humor in the favorites section. Anyway, I was extremely disappointed in this speech. This is because it was extremely blatant that I wasn't prepared, and that I rushed it the night it was due. This is disappointing because I had a plethora of information regarding my subject and the controversies surrounding it, but I couldn't adequately communicate them because of the pressure due to the webcam. I also repeatedly stumbled and froze up, which is never good in a speech.

by the way, when I heard myself talk and saw myself on the video... IT WAS TERRIFYING, KILL IT WITH FIRE

Making this video was certainly different than all the rest. I think by pushing it off to the last minute it was not as good as it could of been. There was plenty of information that found for this speech and that part was easy. The tough part was putting the facts together and making it flow. I think that if I spent more time writing the speech it could of flowed more smoothly. I was actually a little nervous for this speech because I has never done one like it. Watching myself on this video was weird too. Also hearing yourself talk is weird. It was hard to put any emotion into talking into a camera.

  18. For my speech, I did a convincing speech, and I honestly think I this was one of my worst speeches. I am a perfectionist, so it was really hard to get through my speech at the end. In this speech I did my best to have eye contact and tried to slow my rate of talking at much at I could. I do not know why but I also had a lot of facial expressions in my video, which I thought was pretty funny to watch. It took me awhile to organize this speech, but in the end think it turned out pretty well. When I prepared for this speech I believe I practiced for a good number of time, and was pretty confident with it. The only thing I greatly messed up on was the turning in of the speech. I forgot that using my camera to record would cause youtube to upload about 1 gigabits of video. So instead of taking around two hours to upload the video has taken four hours and therefore its late.

For this speech, I decided to do a convincing topic as to why high school students should have part time jobs. The idea of recording myself alone was pretty foreign with me, and I can tell that my tone was a bit different. Once again, I was most comfortable with using a manuscript with this speech. I'm not exactly sure how my eye contact was, because I was pretty much reading my manuscript from straight off the computer screen. I was able to get a lot of information on this topic, and I think I explained it well. I don't think that my background was too distracting (my kitchen), and I think my volume was alright on this speech. In the end, I think that this was probably my most serious speech, but I think I was able to present a good case for my argument as to why high schoolers should have jobs.

And every time I went through it again I could slow myself down a bit more. Also having the slideshow from my USANA guy really help with with the information that I needed. I did not like this speech at all. It felt very awkward just looking at a camera instead of an actual audience. I enjoyed my topic but not how I presented. I think my eye contact was good but I stumbled over a lot of words and had to start over more than I wanted to. Overall, I didn't like this speech at all and could've done much better.

    1. Jordan, I really like the topic of your speech! I totally agree in how creativity isn't valued that much in the classroom and usually gets looked down upon. Being a creative person myself, I think is better when people look at things and express it in a different way. I feel you on the stumbling on some words since I had the same problem, but I feel you did just fine. Good job!

    2. Really good speech, I like the topic. I am not a creative students, and I could never do any thing I like to do when I was in china. You have really good eye contact, and the speech is really convincing. In some parts your spoke a little slow, but still a really good speech.

    3. Jordan,
I completely agree with your topic, and I really loved your speech. In it you had great eye contact, facial expressions, and a good pace. I would suggest that next time you work on adding some gestures, and maybe practicing a bit more so you don't stumble. However, even if you do stumble don't apologize, just keep going. Other than that your speech was well put together, and you had some great examples of people who were creative.

I did not like this speech at all. I felt a little weird doing it in front of a camera, which added another element of change. I would much rather do a speech in front of people than in front of a camera. The only aspect that I didnt mind was that I wasnt the least bit nervous, I just turned it on and started talking. Although this was a day late I hope I did enough preparation, and I think I could have improved on the eye contact, it just felt weird looking into a camera lens. All in all, like I said this was by far my least favorite yet.

    1. Ethan, I could definitely tell you were a little uncomfortable with the camera. You had some really good facts that supported your opinion. You seemed to be a little bored with your own topic but that might just be because it was filmed and not in person. Your eye contact was pretty good. I agree that America needs to do something about the obesity problem and exercise is the answer. Even though you didn't like this form of giving a speech it still turned out pretty nicely.

    2. Your topic is interesting. But as you said, you looks do not like that speech and feels uncomfortable in front of the camera. If you can improve your facial expression, it would be better. Well done!

    1. Mo,
How do I begin? Um, on top of the fact that the speech was 5 minutes under the minimal time, it seemed like an extremely prejudiced topic for you. Although you were confident, the casualness and lack of preparation was a bit disheartening. You are a natural speaker, but I personally think that you just don't care enough to try for these speeches. Seeing as this is our second last speech, I will speak openly with the hope that you take the last speech more seriously. There were no facts, vulgar language used to describe other human beings, and you managed to turn me against your topic due to your delineation of your personal views.

    2. Mo, I do think this wasn't one of your best speeches. It was way too short and there were not many facts incorporated into your speech. I also do not agree with your statement that some Mexicans are just here to take our jobs. However, you seemed very confident in yourself and very passionate about your topic.

I really hate this speech of mine. It's not really good with my voice that day. the concept of the speech is broad so it pretty hard to tell everything.

    1. I agree with you that the real book is much better than e book. Your examples and reasons are concise. Your eye contact and speaking speed are good. I like your speech. Well done!

I believe my speech was persuasive enough to at least make people think about doing what I told them to do. I also believe my confidence was high on this speech, due to it being in the comfort of my own home and being able to redo the speech whenever I made a mistake. My eye contact was as good as can be in this video taped speech, and I also believe my gestures were not as good as others, mainly because I was video taping myself by holding a phone camera in front of my face, so I wasn't able to show my whole body.

Alyssa: Your intro was very funny. You seemed to have a lot of confidence and you also seemed to enjoy convincing people to clean bathrooms

Ethan: This speech was very informative, the facts you talked about were all positive causing this to be a good convincing speech towards exercise.

Jordan: I believe your speech is one of my favorites. There is truth to what you said and I also believe that teachers need to see this speech in order to understand students.
