Informative Speech

Write one well-written and thought-out paragraph. Use complete sentences and correct grammar. Upper class students should be writing paragraphs with compound and complex sentences that are a minimum of six sentences long. Please specifically comment on your introduction, conclusion, and visual aid. For your introduction--did you cover the four points of a good introduction? Conclusion--solid? Are all three parts included? Visual aid-seamless? Did you read off of it or was it an incorporated part of your speech?

In addition, you may comment on the following aspects as well:
  1. Eye Contact
  2. Nervousness
  3. Audience Feedback
  4. Preparation--did you practice enough? Too much?
  5. Speaking Rate (too fast? too slow? too many pauses?)
  6. Gestures (Did you do any?)
  7. Poise and Presence
  8. Organization
  9. Facial Expressions
  10. Dressed and groomed?
  11. Outline/Note Cards/Manuscript
  12. Works Cited?

What went well? What do you need to work on for the next speech? Be as specific as possible!

In addition, leave feedback for at least two students. Feedback should be specific and original

  1. This speech went just okay for me in my opinion. I was not nervous to go up there, but my voice kept shaking when I talked, even when I took deep breaths. I think practicing with my mom and then my dad helped me feel more confident with the content of my speech. It was fun to research a new topic and learn new information. I used a manuscript which limited my eye contact, but with the length of this speech it made me more comfortable to have it all typed out.

    4. Brooke, I thought your speech was one of the best speeches, you really gave some great info on the logic behind the Bermuda triangle. Personally I knew very little other than it was essentially a black hole for ships. I was really intrigued with the information given. Great job, you went a little under the time limit but it was jam packed with info. Well done.

    6. I think it is a very interesting topic. You looked very calm and your pace was very good. I heard about the Bermuda triangle before, but your speech let me get to know it very well. Good job.

  2. The informative speech went okay. My time was a bit short and I felt like I rushed talking sometimes, something I still really need to work on. I also still need to practice talking a bit louder and I felt my gestures and eye contact suffered in this speech. I knew I wanted to use a manuscript because the length of this speech was a bit intimidating. I also should have worked on my visual aid a bit more, I sort of threw that portion of the speech in last minute. Overall not my best speech and didn't really like this one as much as other speeches in the past.

    1. I enjoyed your speech! It was very informative and had lots of good facts and details that I thought helped really make the speech great. For me, you're speaking loud enough and I can hear you just fine! Good job, loved the topic you picked.

    2. Kendra I really enjoyed your speech. I thought you did a fantastic job on your topic. There were many things I didn't know about caffeine in there. and although you thought it was an intimidating speech you had great poise and your volume was great! overall nice job!

    3. I liked your topic Kendra, especially because I work at Starbucks. I knew that caffeine had both good and bad effects but not that many of them. You looked very confident up their and covered your online research well. Good Job!

    4. Although I'm not a big coffee drinker, I still enjoyed your speech because even though you focused on coffee mostly, it still applied to anything that has caffeine in it. It did run a little short but in the long run the time wasn't a big factor because we learned just as much in your short speech as we did in some of the longer speeches. Overall, well done, a few things to work on but overall, you did a good job.

    5. I learned a lot from your speech! I had no idea that caffeine could be so bad for you. I could tell that you were confident about your topic. I also liked how you cited and referenced to your sources in your speech as you were speaking. Overall, nicely done!

  3. I was very intimidated by this speech when we first got word about it. Picking a topic was so difficult for me as I was jumping back and fourth between topics. I am not very happy with the topic I chose. It was difficult for me to research as I was not very interested in my topic. I am glad I was able to find a lot of information though. Going up to give my speech I was not nervous at all. I did lose my spot during my speech which kind of made me stutter and pause for a second. I feel like I lacked eye contact with this speech and felt I needed to do more gestures or at least something else with my hands. This speech was not my favorite speech as some in the past.

    1. When you first started talking about organic foods, I honestly thought it was going to be boring, but you presented the information very nicely. I really enjoyed it! Keep it up!

    2. Sarah I really connected to this topic because my family personally eats organic and non-GMO, so I personally found it really interesting. I liked how you presented your information and the visual aid with the two different apples. You seemed a little nervous but seemed to pull through it.

      Delete
    3. Sarah, your speech was well thought out, I think you knew that when you brought up the organic subject a lot of us would just flat out not care, but the way you started out your speech with the apples and then sliding into the organic part of your speech was really well done. This was really interesting and informative. Overall really well done with a hard topic.

    4. I thought you presented your topic great and I couldn't tell you weren't interested in your topic. I found the information interesting because I definitely wondered what the difference was. I enjoyed your speech, good job!

  4. This speech felt like my worst speech. I made pretty good eye contact and I had lots of hand gestures but I was not as well prepared for this speech and I was up late the night before trying to finish and perfect the speech which is ironic considering my speech was all about how we need more sleep. I had a lot of "um's" and "a's" which I think took away from the flow of the speech. I knew the words that I wanted to say but even though I had practiced this speech four times I still blanked on the way I wanted to phrase it. My presentation seemed like it was pretty good but the last slide on REM Sleep seemed a little packed with info and I should have probably made it two or three slides. In the end I think that this was my weakest speech this year and I am hoping to improve for my next speech.

    1. I liked your speech and didn't feel like you did bad at all. I liked your topic and can totally agree. I feel you had good eye contact, good gestures and I feel that you used gestures well. Maybe a few things here and there but not bad at all. I was very interested in the stats you shared with us. I also liked how you connected with the audience. Nice job.

    2. Bryan your speech really taught me a lot about sleep that I didn't previously know. Out of all the speeches I think I was most interested in your topic. I did notice you seemed nervous and used a lot of "um"s but besides that your eye contact and gestures were relly good. The powerpoint you did was interesting but I agree with you that the REM slide was sort of overloaded with information. Overall a good job, but not your best speech of the year.

      Delete
    3. Bryan, your topic was absolutely perfect for a teenage audience. You really covered sleep well and I think that everybody in that classroom needed to hear that. Yes you did have a lot of "a's" and "um's" but not enough to keep the audience blanked out. Overall, I agree with everything you covered in your speech and I'm glad you picked that topic.

    4. I thought your speech was very interesting. I personally am a huge sleeper and I need a certain amount of sleep every night to function. So it was very interesting to learn some of the facts about sleep. Also I felt like you had great poise while up there and great eye contact. Overall it was a great speech and I hope you keep it up.

    5. Overall I do not think your speech was that bad! I will admit at times that it was a bit boring but it was definitely filled with solid info. In the end I thought it was pretty cool

    6. You made me realize how important sleeping is. This is a good speech. I will told other people about the information in your speech. It is very helpful. You also connected to the audience and have a very good eye contact.Good job.

    7. Your speech was very interesting. Since I am a victim of not getting enough sleep every night it was cool to hear some of the facts that you gave. Your speech was extremely informative and you seemed confident up there, also your eye contact was really good.

  5. This speech made me really sad through a series of self realizations about how our society works. I did not really make eye contact. No hand gestures either. I was not really prepared for it as I only read over it like twenty times. I did just remake the speech yesterday. I also did not get to use the video footage to show the devastating impact of a nuclear bomb. I liked the topic but I should've done a happier one. I wanted to talk about myself or Rocketry. Either would have been funnier and more moving.

    2. I really liked your speech David. I knew that bombs are really powerful and can wipe out a town, but I didn't know that it could wipe out close to a fourth of our state. That was pretty powerful to me seeing that. Like you said about eye contact, just a little bit more and some gestures and I feel that your speeches will be golden man.

    3. I enjoyed your speech it was very interesting. I didn't know a lot about the topic you chose and you did an amazing job on it! don't doubt yourself on your speeches and on you choice of words. Just add some more gestures and more eye contact and you are solid. overall you had a great topic and did a great job.

    4. I really enjoyed your speech just like every other one. I really thought you had an interesting speech and your topic. I thought you had very good poise and you were loud enough for me to hear clearly in the back. Overall great speech and can't wait for what interesting things you have for the next speech.

    5. David you need to be more confident. You also need to commit to a topic (it's not that hard trust me.) You're a good speaker and you need to realize that.

    7. I think you have a certain style of speech that is unique to you and that everyone looks forward to listening to. I don't think you should worry about things like hand gestures because that's not your style of speaking and you still engage us as an audience. I thought your topic was interesting just be more confident in yourself! Good speech!

    8. David, it is true, your speech did bring about a realization about how devastating someone making a bad decision could be. But you also gave us some amazing information about WMDs that I did not know about before. Your eye contact wasn't amazing but the content of your speech made up for it and then some. Well done, your speeches are always ones I look forward to listening to.

  6. I was a little nervous for this speech probably because I was the first one to go. I felt that I did ok. I could have had better eye contact. I watched my video and realized when I said one of my stats, I said singer instead of listener and that was probably why I was getting weird looks up front. Anyway, I felt that I did alright with telling why I picked this topic and why people do listen to this music. It really is the same way for every other genre. I liked this speech.

    1. For the first person to go, I thought you did pretty good. I do l like some country music but not a whole bunch. So therefore, I was somewhat able to connect with you. I thought you did a great job explaining everything. But I do think that you should try and limit like the number of words you put on each slide. Overall, besides the amount of words on each slide, I thought you did a great job.

    2. I think your speech went very well. Your introduction of the history of the country music was very interesting. I got to know about the culture of American country music. I think this speech taught me a lot. Because it is totally different than Chinese country music.

    3. Tyler, I was not able to relate too well to your speech due to the fact that I rarely listen to country music. Although the information you gave about the topic was interesting and made me take a second look at the music, still not my favorite but not as bad as I remembered. You were really able to show the positives in that type of music. Well done overall.

  7. I was not as nervous for this speech as I was for the other previous speeches. Although I did have places where I was nervous and miss said words and sentences. I thought I had a lot of eye contact through my speech. I didn't have many gestures in this speech due to looking at a piece of paper. Overall I thought i did well. I wish I could have the confidence to present a better speech. Lastly I like this style of speech.

    1. Hailey before you started and I heard your topic I expected it to be sort of boring, but then at the end I found I had learned a lot. Your eye contact suffered because of the manuscript, but on the other hand I really loved the photos you showed in the slideshow. Not your strongest speech but I liked it!

    3. Hailey, I thought your speech went really well. A few of your words got jumbled up but in the long run we were still able to understand you. You presented information that a lot of us probably did not know. You made a lot of eye contact and you stayed engaging with your words and your slides. Nice job.

  8. I really enjoyed researching this speech and learning more about somewhere I love. I thought I had decent eye contact, but probably could've had more gestures. I thought my information was interesting and well-organized. I also felt I had a strong introduction with all the key factors. I think a lot of people enjoyed my topic and could connect to it a lot. All in all, I felt this was one of my stronger speeches and was very enjoyable to do.

    1. Krista, my absolute favorite part of your speech was the slideshow. It was really visually appealing and you did a good job of minimizing it so it added to your speech instead of being a distraction. I've only been to Disney once when I was younger and didn't like it at all, but your speech honestly made me consider going back again to explore some more areas. I can tell how much you love this place so that helped you connect to the audience.

  9. This was my most favorite speech so far. I felt that I was very confident on what I said and that I covered my facts well. It is very hard to go on the topic of extraterrestrials so vaguely like that because of the time we had to make on this speech so I had to be super specific. I still liked it that I added hints overall like crop circles and what ancient civilizations interpreted as "god's" forever. I had amateur eye contact which was much better than before, especially because I had a manuscript. I wish I could've shown more of that video. That is my only regret but I couldn't of because of the time. It went way deeper on that crop circle and certain equations on light and it was very convincing. Overall, I think that my speech went very well and I am happy that I got to share with you guys a super vague explanation of extraterrestrials and how they are out their.

    1. Vincent, I liked the topic that you had for your speech. You had all of your information well thought out and you sounded very educated in your topic. The only thing that I would say wasn't amazing was your eye contact and your pace. You were looking down at your sheet most of the time and you were talking at about 100 words per minute, which in my opinion was pretty funny cause you sounded like a true alien nerd, although I was still able to understand it I think it might have been a little harder to understand the speech because of all the information that was being put out so quickly. Otherwise you did a great job and you made me question whether there might actually be life outside of our bubble we call earth.

  10. I thought my speech went okay this time around. I felt a little sick during this speech and was starting to lose my voice so I didn't feel as good. I felt like I have been talking loud enough for everyone to understand me, but I felt that my eye contact wasn't that good because honestly even though I practiced four times it was hard for me to look up because I felt like I was going to lose my spot. Also I completely forgot to change to the last slide on my power point so I had to quickly do that while in the middle of what was on that slide.

  13. I think my speech not went well. All the names are so hard to pronounce, those are not English names. In the beginning, I did not choose this topic. Since the attack in Paris, I was so astonished. What kind of culture are this kind of people from. So I search some information about Burqa Ban. Although this may not have been the best of informative speeches, this would have been an absolutely amazing speech for you to have done for your 1 minute of fame speech on because you would have been able to double it with a demonstration along with why you personally like the speech so much. All in all though, well done.

  15. I thought this speech went alright. I think I have tendency to look over the audience. I thought this was the least shakey speech so far maybe because I was so comfortable with the topic. My voice started out shaky but this was the first time I settled in and it pretty much went away, as opposed to getting worse, which was nice. I thought I used a lot of gestures which was good. I do wish I would've chosen a different topic maybe one that would've been easier to connect to my audience and be a little more interesting for them. Overall this was my smoothest speech so far I just wish it would've been on something else.

I think my conclusion was all right, but it probably could have been better. I am not exactly sure if I covered all three parts or not. I liked how my power point turned out. I would definitely consider doing a power point for another speech. Since I had very little words on each slide, I was not tempted to read off of it.
